Marauder wrestlers extend streak to 14-0

Saturday, December 23, 2006

The high-flying Marauder wrestlers blasted Moon Valley, 4A I State runners-up, 57-15 and trampled the Prescott Badgers (6th in State) 52-13.

"This 14-0 dual meet win-streak is the best the Marauders have had in my 18 years at Mingus," said coach Tom Wokasch.

The Mingus wrestlers won 11 out of 14 matches with seven pins against Moon Valley. This was a big win because Moon Valley beat the Marauders last year by three points when Mingus had three top wrestlers out of the line-up.

The Rockets had two state placers and seven varsity returners from last year's state runner-up finish. The Mingus wrestlers who kept their 12-match win streak alive were sophomore State champion Josh Chang(119lbs.) with a pin, 130lbs. freshman stud David Wilber with a pin, senior two-time state champion Tyler Chang(140lbs.) with a pin, senior Cody Raber(152lbs.) with an 11-9 decision, senior most improved Nathan Hagberg(171 lbs.) with a pin and junior Joey Loehr(189lbs.) with a pin. Also, Travis Wokasch, state champion at 145lbs. wrestled the Rockets' only three-time state placer, James Eastin (3rd at 140lbs.).

This was the most exciting match of the evening because Wokasch pulled out a reversal in the last eight seconds of the match to win 3-2 in a nail-bitter. Wokasch and Eastin have faced each four times in their career and Wokasch has beaten Eastin every time by one point.

Other Marauders who had wins were sophomore Phillip Williams(112lbs.) by pins, sophomore Weston Lymangrover(135lbs.) won by forfeit, junior Matt Hamilton(160lbs.) won in overtime 8-6, and senior Cory Ferguson(215lbs.) won by pin.

Winning JV matches were Lance Helsel(189), Jose Gil(152), Layton Dickerson(160), Brent Stamper(160), Jack Zellner(171).

Mingus trampled the Prescott Badgers 52-13 the following Wednesday night under Prescott's mat lamp. This is the seventh straight year Mingus has dethroned the Badgers.

The Marauders led of with Matt Hamilton(Jr.) at 160lbs. facing AZ National team member Jason Sanchez winning decisively 13-3. Nathan Hagberg(Sr.-171lbs./ 1st year on varsity) continued his unbelievable winning ways with a 6-3. Score 7-0 Mingus. Joey Loehr(Jr.-189) lost a hard fought battle to Jake Jarvis 17-8. Score 7-4 Mingus. Cory Ferguson(Sr.-215) tossed his opponent around like a rag doll for a pin in 1:02. Mingus forfeited Hwt. due to an injury to Chris Settanni.

Score 13-10 Mingus. Jake Addis(Fr.-103) torqued Braden Hicks to the mat for a pin in 1:57. Luke Goettl(Fr.-112) back in the line-up trashed Grant Anderson 16-1 for a technical fall. Josh Chang(So.-119) battled hard with a 9-0 win. Ben Mclaughlin (Jr.-125) won 7-5 in a bloodied fight. Score Mingus 31-10. David Wilber(Fr.-130) pushed 3X State placer Jeremy Mazon(Sr.) but lost 4-1. Weston Lymangrover(So.-135) won 8-3. Tyler Chang(Sr.-140) thumped Nathan Baker to his back in a fall in 45 seconds. Travis Wokasch(Sr.-145) put the hurt to Max Payne pinning him in 4:45. Cody Raber(Sr.-152) put the icing on the cake with a pin over Matt Lamaster in 43 seconds.

Mingus won 52 to Prescott's 13. Amazingly, there are still six undefeated Mingus wrestlers with 13-0 records: Josh Chang, Weston Lymangrover, Tyler Chang, Travis Wokasch, Cody Raber and Nathan Hagberg. Winning on the JV team were Phillip Williams(112), Jose Gil(152), Layton Dickerson(160), Brent Stamper(171), Jack Zellner(189) and Daniel Davila(Hwt.).

JV tied Prescott 33-33. JV wrestlers still undefeated for the season are Jose Gil(Jr.-152), Jack Zellner(So.-160-189), Brent Stamper(So.-171-189) and Layton Dickerson(Jr.-160-171)

Next up for the Marauders is the 32-team Moon Valley tournament Dec. 22-23.

"We would like to invite everyone to come out and support the Marauders wrestlers at home for the 16- team 12th Annual "Dave Work Memorial" wrestling tournament over the Holidays Dec. 29-30," said coach Wokasch. "Wrestling starts Friday from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Watch the Marauders take on the best in 5A I & 5A II wrestling teams."
