Invasive Plant Removal on Verde River

Nov. 14

Invaders are stealing our river water! You can help out while meeting with other generous and caring folks. Friends of Verde River Greenway will join with the National Park Service to sponsor a morning cleanup aimed at removing invasive pest plants near the water’s edge. Tamarisks and giant reeds are notorious for crowding out natives, changing the soil chemistry and sucking up precious water while providing little habitat for wildlife. The public is invited to bring gloves, loppers and pruning saws to the Tuzigoot River Access Point (just past the Tuzigoot Bridge) in Clarkdale beginning at 8 a.m. Snacks and water for refilling bottles will be provided. For more information contact Marsha at 634-8738.

Nighthawks, poorwills and nightjars

Nov. 18

Andi Rogers, wildlife biologist with the Arizona Game and Fish Department in Flagstaff, will give a program on goatsuckers, birds that include common and lesser nighthawks, the common poorwill, and the buff-collared nightjar, at the Northern Arizona Audubon Society meeting at the Sedona Public Library. Goatsuckers are nocturnal birds that most people hear more often than see. The goatsucker name is based on the ancient belief that these large-mouthed birds suckled on goats’ milk by night; but their presence near such animals was no doubt due to the insects hovering about them. This erroneous folk belief is perpetuated in the common name of the family of these birds.

Come to this meeting at 7 p.m. to learn the natural history and behavior of these birds as well as the recent Partners in Flight effort toward their west wide monitoring. The event is free and guests are welcome.
