Local dentists take a stand against sweets this Halloween
Nov. 3

This Halloween, trick-or-treaters can bring their excess candy to Cottonwood Children's Dentistry and Woodford Orthodontics and receive $1 per pound. Dr. Mitzi Wasden and Dr. Brad Woodford are leading this anti-decay movement by giving away dollars and toothbrushes in exchange for cavity-provoking candy.
Global sugar consumption for kids increases by about 2 percent annually and currently sits at 50 million tons per year, which means parents need to be sure their kids teeth are being cared for more than ever. Candy, as well as hurting children's teeth, can lead to hyperactivity and weight gain. In some cases, the wrong types of candy can also lead to broken teeth and damaged braces.
Candy will be collected at Cottonwood Children's Dentistry and Woodford Orthodontics Nov. 3 from 3 to 5 p.m. The office is located off of Black Hills Drive at 10 N. Alamos Drive in Cottonwood. Sedona Genealogy Club meets
Oct. 26
The Sedona Genealogy Club meets at 1:30 p.m. at the Sedona Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 160 Mormon Hill Road, off of Brewer Road.
Putting together your family history and piecing together quilts have many common threads. There is the frustration of not having or finding the right piece or person for your quilt block or family tree and the satisfaction of finally getting all of the pieces in their proper places. Kristin Boyes of Flagstaff is a long time quilter with an avid interest in genealogy. She will combine her knowledge of both subjects when she speaks at our meeting about family quilts, their traditions and what you can learn from them.
Anyone interested in genealogy is welcome to attend and to meet others who are enthusiastic about their genealogy research. For more information, contact Betsy Feinberg, club president at 203-0676 ext. 11.
Altar de Dia de los Muertos
Oct. 26-Nov. 2
Residents of the Mexican community of Sedona have built a traditional Day of the Dead Altar (Altar de Dia de los Muertos) by the fireplace at Sedona Public Library. The altar is the sacred place where the living honor the dead. The altar is decorated with flowers (yellow and purple), special offerings including foods, liquor and other items that were favorites of our departed loved ones. The Day of the Celebration is Nov. 2, and on this day we try to forget the abyss that separates life from death.
Charla/Talk at Sedona Library (bw photo of chichi castenango in Sedona folder)
Oct. 27
Sedona Public Library's Latino Services is pleased to invite everyone interested in expanding their knowledge about the diversity of the Hispanic world to attend the Fourth "Charla/Talk" Series at 6:30 p.m. in the Si Birch Community Room at Sedona Public Library.
Prof. Robert Neustadt's talk "Reading Music: Listening to Culture in Spanish America" will offer exciting information about the historical development of certain Latin American indigenous music and instruments. This "Charla/Talk" will kick off by setting up the proper cultural and historical background that will inform the audience how the Spanish colonizers employed music as a key arm of the Conquest.
Prof. Neustadt will illustrate his talk with relevant audiovisual and recorded materials. He will discuss the case of the "marimba" in Guatemala, as an example of how indigenous and Western musical styles combine, compete and contradict with each other in the form of a musical instrument and the formation of Guatemala's national identity. Another aspect of this "Charla/Talk" will address the international political controversy surrounding the idea of "indigenous" music from the Andes, such as the "Charango-Gate." Prof. Neustadt will show how "reading music" is a technique for listening to the manner in which cultural identity has been and continues to be, negotiated, sung and played throughout Latin America.

Healthy changes to the WIC Food Program
Yavapai County Community Health Services (YCCHS) administers the Federal program, Women, Infants and Children's (WIC) through a grant with Arizona Department of Health Services for eligible participants. The program began in the 1970s as a health prevention program for young children by providing foods with essential nutrients, such as protein, iron, calcium and vitamins A and C. However, many of the foods were also high in calories and fat. The food package has just recently changed to promote healthier eating by including fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grain foods such as whole wheat bread, brown rice and corn tortillas and switching to low-fat milk
To find out about eligibility for this program, call Cottonwood at (928) 639-8134.
