Letter: Was election for president or an emperor?

A recent Rasmussen poll found that 7 of 10 Americans want our government to reduce spending - not slow it down - reduce.  Some 62 percent would prefer across -the-board cuts. They understand the consequences of our unsustainable spending binge. However, only a little more than 40 percent believe it will happen - and with good reason. Democrat leadership, including President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Reid and Nancy Pelosi all claim there is no spending problem. I can't attest to the intelligence of Reid or Pelosi.

Their public pronouncements do not inspire confidence, both have become millionaires in public office - Reid has been implicated in shady land deals, Pelosi the moving force behind legislation that has enhanced both her and her husband's wealth. But the president is known to be an intelligent man.

So, he must understand what nearly every economist in the country understands - that our country is headed for financial Armageddon.  But, he has made it plain that he does not intend to slow down the spending. That means he either has no common sense to go with his intelligence, or he is so ideologically rigid that he doesn't care.

Just as during his re-election campaign, during which he avoided debating the economic condition by making his campaign about everything but the economy, Mr. Obama is using the same tactic in the coming fight over raising the debt ceiling.

He, and a complicit, fawning media, wants us to believe it's about paying our debts. It is not. The debt ceiling debate is essentially about borrowing. Without an increase in the ceiling there can be no borrowing for greater spending.

Mr. Obama and his cohorts say that, without a higher ceiling (he wants it to be unlimited) the country will default on its debt. Actually, there is enough revenue coming into government coffers monthly to cover 60 percent of current spending.

The argument is about the 40 percent that we are borrowing. Those revenues must be spent, first, to cover the interest payments on the national debt - about $200 billion a year right now - and government owed pensions.

That is required by the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution (a document Liberals find to be very inconvenient). The rest would be required to cover "essential "government services. Other debt would have to be delayed or shuffled as revenue came in, but that does not mean that unfilled contracts could not be cancelled and non-essential personnel furloughed.

Mr. Obama also claims that there is no way spending can be cut without damaging the economy or reducing services. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) just put the lie to that claim, releasing a report detailing $4.6 trillion in optional cuts that will not hurt either the economy or services.

A small sample (ten year savings): raise the earliest eligibility age for Social Security ($142 billion), limit highway funding to expected highway revenues ($86 billion), adopt a voucher plan for federal employees health benefits program ($73 billion), limit medical malpractice lawsuits ($64 billion), eliminate intercity rail subsidies ($30 billion).

And the list goes on, ready for Congress to simply lift the suggestions from the report pages and transfer them to a bill. The CBO suggests that just cutting funding for all agencies, other than defense, by a mere one percent would save $932 billion over 10 years. I would venture to say that there is a minimum of 10 percent waste and fraud in any given government agency - the Education Department, alone, has dozens of programs that are duplicates.

If a program fails, it isn't shut down; a new one is begun. CBO goes on to suggest that a 1 percent reduction in just the growth in defense spending would save $862 billion over 10 years.

So, the president could very easily satisfy Republican demands for spending cuts in exchange for a higher debt ceiling. But since his re-election, Mr. Obama has become even more confrontational, more inflexible and, yes, more arrogant in his dealings with his opposition.

He has said that he has no intention of even negotiating with the House of Representatives - where all revenue bills must originate - on the issue of raising the debt ceiling. In regard to the election he says "I won, you lost." It has apparently not fazed him that the voters returned the Republicans to the majority in the House. Perhaps he believes the election was not for president but for emperor.

Mr. Bassett, it doesn't matter what the specifics where, you asked for non-anecdotal evidence, I gave it.

As things don't go your way you attempt to re-frame the debate. Grow up sir, you argue like a kindergartner.

@ RE, Worked by the system,

You are the perfect example of the lying Neocons who blog on this forum. You remind me of another Neocon tea-bagger who blogs under psuedonyms like, 'Shaniqua Jackson' or 'Hey hicks, we a comin''. Are you laughing MJ?

I think most people would give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you wrote a parody, meant to be funny. That is until you followed it up with a statement meant to persuade readers that it was all real! Really? You expect anyone to believe something as silly as that? You are absurd!

You would have to be a blind naive fool not to know that us workin' suckers are being played by folks -rich and poor - workin' the government system ..... or a liberal ... which is the same thing.
I wonder what will happen when the Politicians can no longer give away the bread and circus.

Mr. Gordon is probably talking about how the payroll tax holiday which reduced your SS withholding by 2% for the past 2 years, expired on Jan 1st 2013. Yup, it hit us all. By the way, from what I gather, neither party had plans to renew that policy.

As far your health insurance's stability being damaged, how I wonder? Is your employer threatening to cut out your benefits? If so, you have options that will likely cost you less than you pay now. I don't have enough information to respond but it sounds to me like you are, once again, imagining the worst.

As much as it must disappoint y'all, the sky is not falling.

Bill Bassett, I observed that a Romney campaign ad that ran in Ohio was pilloried in mainstream news and by 'fact checkers' for being misleading or an outright lie when it was clearly true--Jeep vehicles currently being produced in the USA for export will be produced in China (also Russia and Italy), thus reducing the need for labor in the USA. Your historical factoid is irrelevant.

In other current news, the UAW is trying to force Chrysler/Fiat to buy back shares of Chrysler stock at an inflated price. Their retiree medical benefits fund is going broke.

I owe an apology to no one, this story is very true. I grew up in New York City where there are hundreds, if not more, city projects packed full with the same kind of folks collecting "Entitlements" as a "Career", they train their kids to do the same and this has been going on for generations. So, this is no falsehood and this goes on in every state. I don't understand your comment about our finest that have spilled blood, I am one, but what does that have to do with people working the system because there to lazy and uneducated to get a job so they leech off the system paid for by our taxes! And another thing, they will tell you they are Owed it and now they even get free cell phones. Whatís next a free car, gas and insurance? I understand bad things happen to good people and help is needed at times but to milk the system as your career is unexceptable. Wake up!

Mr. Bassett, in answer to your request for first hand examples, I give you myself. I take home less than $30,000 a year and Obama's policies have DIRECTLY reduced the amount of money I take home, as well as damaged my health insurance stability.

And your response is?

To: Working The System.
I'm pretty sure that story of yours has been around since a least the 1990s when Bill Clinton was on office. And, I think I remember major welfare reforms where put in place at that time. Now I am quite sure there are people who, a you say, work the system but do you know these people? Are they here in the Verde Valley? I didn't think so.
May I suggest you spend an hour in the waiting room of The Department of Economic Security in Cottonwood, it's on Cherry St. Just sit quietly and watch the people. The old saw about walking a mile in their shoes comes to mind.

Oh, Nutso, Chrysler was building Jeeps in China in the 90s. Grand Cherokees to be exact. I was actually surprised to hear they had stopped that practice. Jeeps are very popular in China.

Oh, to whoever commented about our military bases closing...yeah, lots of bases have closed. I am curious as to which other nation or alliance of nations would launch an invasion onto US soil? We are, after all, pretty far away from our various enemies. They don't need invading armies, they use other methods now-a-days. And, how do you make the leap from cutting military budgets to increasing welfare payments? Puzzling argument but keep making it, maybe it will make sense one day, to someone.

So where did you read this story? Oh... it was in that email from you crazy uncle/aunt?

The same one that all the other people posted about on the internet? The same one that is a a complete falsehood? The same one that is fact checked in about 30 seconds in the internet or with a whiff of common sense?

In Louisiana, this (now) single mother with 9 children would receive $512/month with a lifetime limit of collecting this for 5 years. She'd be able to get another $500/mo roughly in food stamps and probably get some housing assistance as well.

Now as far as Survivor Benefits from Social Security for the children, it depends on whether or not Larmondo had a regular job and paid into Social Security for at least 18 months. If he did, then they'll qualify for benefits. If not, no soup for the kids. Being generous and saying Larmondo spent some time workin' at McDonald's to get his 18 months in... his partner may be able to collect the one time payment of $255 for his death and 7 of the kids would be eligible for continuing payments until 18. Those payments would be kind of small though, a total of less than $500/mo. combined.

So now who has been worked? Seems to me you are now as much of a misleading loser as the guy who's obituary was used to start this sick joke that seems to get all the wingnut's worked into a lather.

We are all for free speech but we hope you are happy that you are spreading falsehoods based upon that right that so many of the nations finest have spilled blood for.

Seems that if you have any spine at all you will offer up an apology to all those whom you attempted to miss-lead, be sure to let whoever sent you that email know as well... and in the future if it sounds too good to be true... it usually is...

I just finished reading this story about 25 year old Larmondo Flair Allen and had to post it. This is part of the reason America has money problems. This "Working The System" has to STOP but the people running our country keep funding what they call entitlements and are to stupid to see whats really going on or they simply don't care.

Let's get the players straight before we go on with this..

His "Companion" : Kawanner Armstrong

His Sons : Christian Allen
Kwan Allen
Larmondo Allen, Jr.

His Daughters: Deidra Allen
Larmenshell Allen
Lamonshea Allen
Larmomdriel Allen
Larmerja Allen
Korevell Allen

AT AGE 25 - He had 9 Children.

His Father: Burnell Thompson

His Mother: Esther Allen
His Stepfather: Bruce Gordy

His Brothers: Burnell Thompson
Wil Willis
Danta Edwards
Reshe Edwards
Mattnell Allen
Burnell Allen
Lester Allen

His Sisters: Shannail Craig
Lekiksha Thompson
Gwendolyn Carter
Jessica Willis
Katina Gordy

His Grandparents: Delors Allen
J.C. Allen
Anna Laura Thompson
Will Thompson

He was 25, and had 3 sons and 6 daughters.
NINE welfare recipients, collecting $950 each.....
That equals $8,550 a month!!! Now, add

"Food Stamps",
"Free" medical,
"Free" school lunches,
...and on and on.

Do the math... $102,000+ /year.

Anyone out there, sittin' on their butt, while reading this, making A HUNDRED GRAND a year, doing nothing?

$11,700,000 PER YEAR...

(And demands 100% of the Taxes Paid by 1,000 avg. taxpayers)

And THAT is why this once great country is going BANKRUPT!!

@ 'For Your Information' re: FactCheck.org

Your URL was browser-specific and unreadable for me. This is better:

No reason not to believe FactCheck.org on this since they tend to favor Democrats. In the last election they were clearly pro-Obama.

For example, when the Romney campaign ran an ad in Ohio claiming that Chrysler was going to build Jeeps in China, FactCheck.org wrote: "Itís misleading to suggest that Chryslerís decision to expand into China will cost U.S. jobs."

Misleading? The figures show that the Romney ad was essentially correct.

Jeep's 2012 Chinese sales of 33,463 through September were double 2011's numbers, while sales in the U.S. rose only 20% to 365,190. Is it possible that when production begins in China it won't cause a sudden drop here? Also consider common parts that are so much cheaper to produce in China. Would it not make more sense to manufacture more of those parts in China for assembly in the U.S.?

Now that the election is over, Chrysler and the media can be more honest. As reported in the Detroit News, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has announced that Chrysler plans to build some Jeep models in China and Russia. "As part of our global expansion of the Jeep brand, there are some cars--that because of the price position in the market--can never be made in the U.S. and exported," he says. Top-of-the-line "pillar cars" Wrangler and Grand Cherokee will continue to be produced in the U.S., but "If you tell me I cannot make a Patriot somewhere else, I might as well go out of the market."

Re: Gary LaMaster - actually he did, although there is no record in the national archives, but thats not a requirement. 2008 Barry Soetoro (aka Obama) while running for office, "I will not take your guns", isn't in the archives either -surprise surprise-
Also, please try to keep up - there's no "idea" being floated here that needs some kind of "credence". The issue is out-of-control spending, which no sane person can deny.
Although, of course, liberals will continue to cloud the problem with hate & prejudice, I would ask to keep the dialog simple please explain why a Senator MUST HAVE an $800 faucet in their private restroom on Capital Hill? It doesn't matter who this is, dem or repub. the issue is GREED...................
