Letter: Require gun owners to have gun safes

No one knows how many guns there are in this country. Some say about 200 million. There is no way to completely control all of them, but, how about some of them? What if:

1. If you own a gun you must have an approved gun safe

2. If that gun is involved in an event that involves the police the owner must prove they have an approved gun safe for that gun.

3 No safe, then 6 months in jail with no ands, buts, maybes or lawyers

We can’t put the police at every school campus, mall or movie theater but we might be able to keep some mentally disturbed youngster from getting an automatic weapon and ammunition. My son, who lives in California, had to prove to the gun dealer that he had a safe before he could buy a rifle. If you can afford the gun, you can afford the safe.

In The United State of America:

It is a PRIVILEGE to hunt and fish and I need a license to do so. It is not a right!

It is a PRIVILEGE to drive a car and I need license to do so. It is not a right!

It is a RIGHT to vote and not a privilege!

It is a RIGHT to own a firearm and not a privilege!

It is a RIGHT to free speech and not a privilege!

Lets get this straight when we as Americans start wanting to add restrictions, licenses and stupid laws to our rights we are destine to fail. Too many brave men and women have died for these RIGHTS and we insult them with acting like they are not worth fighting for or we act like taking them away is a good thing for safety....give me a break.

This sicko that murdered and slaughtered these children and teachers, he will rot in hell. He is not a shooter , he was a murderer! Evil is present in this community as well as all over the world. The Mayberry days of Americana are gone and most countries hate us!

We have gangs that should be treated as terrorists, but we look away. We have Cartels in every state in this great country and even her in the Verde Valley they are terrorists, but we look away. We have an unchecked mental health concern in this country. Millions need help and are living where ever they can and we look away.

Just this morning I was stopped at the red light on Main St. and 89A. This guy was walking down the sidewalk screaming at himself! He was so loud I could hear him with all my windows rolled up. He is one of the unchecked!

But you know what? Give in and give up your rights, guns, life, liberty and well your happiness is lost by then.

I do keep my guns in a 1 ton safe so when I'm not home they are not stolen. My 11 and 14 year old are highly trained to use most guns and respect them. I will protect my Family and neighbors and I will not register my guns or give into the BULL that is being suggested as a good thing to do.

AR-15 is the first model of the Armalite Rifle. AR stands for Armalite Rifle not "assault rifle". I and my family members own them and use them for home defense, hunting of deer, coyotes, javalina, target shooting and any other legal use.

Reguardless if you like guns or not I do not care, but at least stand up for your rights as an American before ALL of Your Rights are Gone and Privileges!

Actually Danny Montoya if you must know I actually do not own an "assault" rifle. I never thought I needed one. I do however own several semi automatic "traditional" rifles. But in reality there is no difference mechanically, the Assault rifles only differ in appearence. That's why a ban is utterly useless. My statements are more about our rights and how liberal sheep like to give them away. It is NOT the governments right to tell me what I want or need.

So Danny, What are you going to shoot with those assault rifles? a deer? shread a target in 2 seconds? A BEER CAN? Where is your DEADLY assault rifles going to end up? In whos hands? Please explain the NEED for such a weapon? It can not be a means of self defense.. a 22 or a 38 can do the job just as well. So if a kid intrudes into your home will you splatter him into pieces? Are you law inforcement? A swat team member? Or do you play cops and robbers with it on the weekends?
Yes, you have a constituitional right to own a gun, but when that was written... need anyone say more.

Actually Mr. Maverick the semi auto rifles that can be turned easily in to automatics are few and far between most cannot easily be turned even by a genius. Notice I did not use the term "assault" rifle because there really is no such thing. Being an expert you should have known that. You stated you did not want to go backwards but any new laws will be doing just that.

Where did the nut get the guns to shoot those poor folks? The one main reason we need gun control.. for nuts like that guy and for nuts like in Tucson shooting. I really do believe in the right to bear arms, but I also believe that right should be carefully handed out.. because just like anything else in this country, there are those who will do as they please, those who will drive drunk, those who think it's okay to beat thier wives and kids, those who willingly do harm to others so.. AT LEAST try to keep guns in the hands of those who are willing to keep them locked, those who go thru a training course.. self defense.. safety course.. ect. and to those who are willing to get a gun owners license. If those of you feel the need to own A gun or multiple guns, and you feel it's your given right to do so, then you should never ever have a problem complying with a few gun laws to AT LEAST TRY keeping guns out of the hands who knowingly buy and steal a gun to do harm... IT WOULDN'T HURT TO TRY.

I agree with Bill Maher who said, why don't these gun nuts come out and admit they love guns and have an addiction to guns just like any other addiction and quit hidding behind the 2nd amendment.

@ Danny Smith - It does not take a genius to turn a semi-auto onto a full automatic assault rifle. Obviously you know little about guns. This liberal has plenty of guns and permits for CC so don't mistake a liberal for a pushover. I just feel going backwards is not a good option. As a disabled veteran I assure you I know how to shoot. If these nut cases did not have guns they probably would have burned down the schools. Then we can discuss banning matches and lighters.

Article comment by: who is blurring the lines mr. smith? .

i was paying attention... clearly... but you should consider that it is the industry itself through it's marketing zest- that is the number one blurring party.

now that you can get everything from a bb gun, airsoft gun, paint ball gun, .22 caliber etc... on up that look like the now ubiquitous ar-15/bushmaster/et all 'semi-automatic' rifle... the lines are very blurred.

now go look up the akin's accelerator ( now illegal since it was an add on that allowed you to get "accelerated" rates of fire beyond semi-auto) and the slide shot system... these are aftermarket stocks that allow the weapons own recoil to refire it... while not modifying the weapon... loop holes indeed.

if the industry makes all the guns look like the infamous ones...then whose fault is it? both the consumer and the provider... not the rest of us who don't need a big gun to feel safe.

the lines are blurry... maybe there needs to be some clarity... how about we make all guns hot pink and see how fast they get painted black...

To Perry Conrad et al- Having owned guns for many years-I would not endorse making an owner lock them up when they were under the owners control-on their hip or behind the door.
The unattended should be secured.I don'twant someone like the kid who firebomb'd the medical helicopter to be able to get yours, mine or his mother's.bobe

First off I stated "except for bolt action" rifles, pay attention please. Yes many SEMI automatics can be emptied in seconds that is why a large magazine ban is a waste of time. Semis's are still a far cry from automatics. The only people who are trying to blur the lines as you state are liberals and anti gun nuts who do not know a thing about guns.

First let me say I am a Life Member of the NRA and an NRA qualified Pistol Sharpshooter.
It is wise and responsible for gun owners to lock their firearms in a safe. We have several safes. The pistol we keep handy for home defense is locked in a small, quick combination safe that can be opened in seconds in an emergency. We have always locked up our guns, even though our children were trained to shoot and handle firearms at a young age. The point is, you can't force people to lock up their firearms any more than you can force someone to not get into a car after drinking alcohol. You would have to say to the entire population of the country, "You are not allowed to drive a car because there is a chance that you may not be responsible and get into a vehicle after drinking". There is no easy answer, and banning guns makes no more sense than banning automobiles. There will always be stupid, irresponsible people. Just because they have a gun safe doesn't mean they will put their firearms in the gunsafe.
