Letter: Killing children in Connecticut

It does not matter to us.

If it mattered to us as a nation, we would do something about it.

We worry that going too fast in cars might cause harm to others. It matters to us so we set speed limits and do something about it.

We worry that someone taking heroin, meth, cocaine, marijuana or other narcotics might do harm to themselves or someone else. It matters to us, so we control those substances and do something about it.

We worry that consuming too much alcohol and driving can be dangerous. It matters to us so we set minimum standards for determining sobriety and we do something about it.

We worry about potential acts of terror using aircraft to inflict harm. It matters to us so we have TSA strip search and irradiate passengers for our protection. But, we do something about it. (Somehow, the Constitutional protection from unreasonable search and seizure is suspendable).

We are concerned with our children’s exposure to drugs at school. It matters to us so we have laws particularly punitive to anyone caught with drugs near a school. We do something about it.

According to one website, “Since 1982, there have been at least 61 mass murders carried out with firearms across the country, with the killings unfolding in 30 states from Massachusetts to Hawaii.” (http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/07/mass-shootings-map

So, as to killing children in Connecticut, or anywhere else for that matter?

This must be OK, because we do not do anything about it.

So It must not really matter to us.

Phil Falbo

Just like Americans do, keep turning a blind eye to the mass murder of innocents killed with guns and drones in the middle east. Drones coming to amerika soon, sheep. Then it's too late to argue over the solution to this problem. It is engineered this way. Look at all the past killing sprees like this one and you will find one common denominator that doesn't make the headlines. Prescription drugs. And a handler.

Re: Ryan Jenson

I not sure exactly what i said about M J that he didn't deserve. To know and remember the past posts of the notorious M J, there is nothing anyone could say about his character that he hasn't already revealed in all its ugliness with his own words and rants.

If you are my reference to abortions that should probably have happened and didn't. To start it would be too easy of me to point out the obvious, babies born with gross deformaties, babies born with no immune systems, hiv infected babies, babies in 3rd world countries that are destined to starve to death even if they make it to the 9th month and delivery. Then there are those that should have been aborted because of the devastating effect their lives had on the rest of mankind. Ghengis Kahn, Herrod, Caligula, Pol Pot, Hitler, Jim Jones, Charles Manson, and the list goes on and on.
I stand by what I said.

A Clockwork Orange, was not a movie about where we are going, in terms of mindless violence, but where we already are. Hollywood and whats going on right now and all over the world and even with our own government, seem to be promoting a violent mindset in the children at a very early age. Terminator would be nice because it is non-human, unfortunately we also use our youngest healthiest and most impressionable young people and send them off to be killed like pawns in unjust wars.

Article comment by: Let's Really Keep Our Cities & Children Safe!

Glad to see there are some intelligent people commenting, like the following person: Im Back to comment again, Right to protect ones self!
First of all, abortion is a separate topic. And then it’s time the Race Card is left out of politics because it’s NOT about what color a person is.
Also, I do agree that it is great that we have an officer in the middle and high school. However, a police officer can only be in one place at one time. To me, it is common sense that if teachers and school staff were trained and armed our children would actually be protected.
Obama said that the, “Nation not doing enough to protect its children”. Well, then let’s use common sense and really protect our children.
If there was a sign at one school saying: All weapons are prohibited on these premises & another school had a sign saying: Staff Heavily Armed and Trained – Any Attempt to Harm Children Will Be Met with Deadly Force. Which school do you think a shooter would go to? Of course, the shooter would go to the school where there are no guns, so he or she could easily cause a lot of harm.
We all want our children to be safe from incidents like what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School. What happened there was an unspeakable terrible incident and that does not even describe what those poor parents and relatives are going through. All our Hearts & Prayers go out to them.
The two website below are very interesting, as in order to live in Switzerland and Kennesaw, GA., it is mandatory that people there own a gun. And guess what, there crime rate is VERY LOW!
Now just in case the articles below are not read there are some exceptions, “Exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who suffer a physical or mental disability which would prohibit them from using such a firearm. Further exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who are paupers or who conscientiously oppose maintaining firearms as a result of beliefs or religious doctrine, or persons convicted of a felony”.
Switzerland and the gun [Gun ownership is mandatory. Gun crimes rates are very low]

The Most Pro-Gun Low-Crime City in the United States
Now, after reading the articles at the above links maybe people will find themselves just a little more educated than before reading this.
My final thought is: If law abiding citizens were to turn in all their guns then it only makes sense that the only people who would have guns are criminals. Is that what you want??? I think not!

Well, Phil, in your haste to prove that the best defense is to be offensive, you failed to answer the question I posed:

Do you believe that murders by young men whose living depends on criminal behavior will stop when law-abiding citizens are denied access to weapons of self-defense?

@ I'm back To comment---:

You said,

"Finally I leave you all with these facts to chew on. Mass murders with out a firearm.
Jim Jones = Koolaid
Jack the ripper = a Knife
Lizzy Bordon = AXE
Jeffrey Dahmer = Blunt Force Trauma
John Wayne Gacy = His bear hands
Timothy Mcveigh = Fertilizer and a rental truck
Osama Binladen = box cutters and airplanes

First, let us examine the historical accuracy of your statement.

While it is true, that many of Jim Jones followers used poison to end their lives. It is generally acknowledged that this was not an entirely "volunteer" action.

Google Jim Jones massacre and read the truth for yourself.

Most certainly the congressman and his staff who went to visit the compound did not "drink the kool aide", they were murdered with guns.

Many of the people who did drink the kool aide had other cult members forcing them to drink it at the threat of being shot to death.

Lizzie Borden was put on trial for the murder of her parents and ACQUITTED of that murder. That is an historical fact [google it for yourself].

Jeffrey Dahmer drugged his victims first and he most certainly did not engage in the massacre of innocent children. He was mentally deranged just like so many of the WHITE males who commit such atrocious crimes.

Jeffrey Dahmer should more rightly be characterized as a serial killer, a white one, and interestingly most serial killers in America are WHITE males.

Joh Wayne Gacy [What a moniker], was a serial killer/sexual predator and his crimes occured over a vast number of years. He did not mass murder his victims in a dramatic, violent and public manner. It makes him no less of a criminal but to compare the actions of a serial killer to one who uses high powered automatic weapons to mass murder people in the blink of an eye is absurd.

Timothy McVeigh was indeed a fitting example of a mass murderer using explosives to murder over 100 human beings and injuring over 800 others.

Men, women, and children indiscriminately in what he claimed was revenge for the government sponsored murder of innocent civilians at Waco, Texas. He mistakenly felt "justified" in his murderous act of domestic terrorism.

Osama Bin Laden was indeed a mass murderer and he used ariplanes as bombs to commit the largest terrorist act in American history.

Ironically, just like all of the warnings against allowing military grade automatice assault rifles to be sold to individual American citizens based upon the claim that eventually those weapons would be used in mass murders of innocent Americans, the government had been warned in advance that terrorists might try to use airplanes as bombs [WMD's] and that warning was ignored.

Now, there is one other thing the people you listed have in common with the singular exception of Osama Bin Laden.

They were all white. I genuinely want to know why these people are all white? I genuinely want to explore that particular phenomenon in America.

Perhaps the answer is a simple one. 78% of America is white. Therefore, we should expect that the vast majority of these mass murderers would be white.

Maybe it is just a matter of statistical probability and nothing more. I think there is something deeper , though, than just mere numerical probability at work.

Admittedly, I have not completely figured out precisely what that deeper cause is yet, but there is something going in America that encourages white males to act out violently more often and with greater violence than others in our society.

The next time you want to attack me for seeking answers to a question that has befuddled others for decades, be sure you have your facts straight and know what you are talking about.

@ I am back again...etc..

Your rant is inaccurate.

In my letter, I make no statements about gun control, a political agenda, against Hollywood movies, or video violence, etc. as you say.

I merely wonder out loud if the nation will choose to try to do something about the ability of the mentally ill or criminals to commit gun violence.

Some things are just too complicated for some people.

Interesting that it makes you so mad.

Good for you and your experience at home. I am glad for your family.

Careful, In other aspects, though, you give m j hope.

I suggest: have school districts provide armed guards to patrol the facilities?

I do not mean rent-a-cop agencies, either.

So, our school taxes go up a little.

Any others?

@ Mr. Holmes

Of course, as individuals, we care about our children.

As a nation, we cringe in horror at each mass murder and, after the horror recedes into the past, we say things like, "We should not let these tragedies result in knee-jerk reactions that will solve symptoms...'

After a little more time, as a nation, we do nothing to try to discover or ameliorate, "...the underlying causes."

And then, another event occurs.

What conclusion can be drawn?

I try so hard to not get drawn into these post battles however I just have to add in again on this topic. Those of you with your personal propaganda and political agendas are as always way off base!
@ WHO EVER POSTED “(It is as if, had a staff member been armed and shot the gunman after only 15 children were murdered, THAT would be somehow prove the 'value' of arming staff)?
You are the winner of the most stupid post ever!
YA IT SURE WOULD HAVE PROVED IT BECAUSE THEN 20 WOULD NOT BE DEAD!!!!!!! Thanks for bring Up such a great statement to make a great point on!
@ Phil, You are such a liberal hypocrite, I love how you fist pound at the need for gun control, violence in movies, video games etc. are all the causes of these tragedy but then you try to slam another poster and make reference to 2 Hollywood movies that it is clear that you have viewed. Just got to laugh at you and your pointless liberal propaganda posts. You and your fellow liberal hypocrite buddy John Bond are always so off base and truly uneducated in reality.
@ John…. Really?? You have to make it about race? GET A CLUE!
@ MJ Sorry, why would you even bring up abortion?
@ Bill, sorry but you too are incorrect about your view on a persons reactions in such a situation. I for one have been there, when I lived in Phoenix several years back My family and I were victims of a home invasion. My family consisting of My wife, daughter and 3 sons! 2am in the morning I heard a crash at my front SECURITY door, I got up to see what it was with my dogs going nuts and it pitch black, as I entered my hallway 3 shots rang out at me coming from the darkness, they missed my knees did not buckle, my pant did not soil nor did my firearm become a boat anchor. As the 2 Armed intruders came at me down the hall they were met 2 feet away from me with a 45 at the lead mans forehead!!!! He stopped dropped his weapon (later identified as a S&W 357 wheel gun not an assault rifle or semi auto glock and btw it was later determined that the intruders weapon was stolen from a cops house) and then he dropped to his knees while his buddy behind him pleaded that I not shot him since he was in the line of fire now!!! In the mean time My wife is in the bedroom on the phone with 911 calling for help as I held the 2 assailants at gun point for over 20 minutes waiting for MCSO to show up to “PROTECT” my precious family and I. I did not return fire in panic, I did not shoot anyone, I did not fail to be a legal responsible gun owner, I am not a ex military, trained expert, cop etc. I am a father, husband and gun owner and my Wife and daughter did not get raped, my sons killed in their sleep or my family left with out me or another family member for the rest of their life. WHY? Because I had my firearm and they were not expecting to be met with a gun!!!!!!
You all talk so negatively about firearms, gun owners, gun rights and why do you talk that why? Because you have never been there in GRAVE DANGER! Clearly if I would have been one of you and just called the police and depended on them for my families safety that night, the 20+ minutes it took for them to respond to the call I am sure I would not be writing this right now and if they had survived my wife and children would have been the worst kind of victims. None of you anti gun people really get it, not at all!
Those that have talked about POLICE in schools are getting slammed all over the country for the thought of placing armed police in schools and how it would effect children with and armed presence in school.. News flash, we do it here in AZ and it works. I have kids in all levels of Cottonwood schools and I think that the Cottonwood PD School Resource Officer Program is the best thing that CPD has ever done. They are there for the kids safety in so many ways. They can spot abuse that may be going on out side of school, drug use in and out of school, strange out of place people on campus, out of sorts staff and on and on and on. I say that there needs to be at least one cop in every school in America and I would be willing to go so far as to say that there are hordes of on and off duty as well as retired cops that will be glad to step up and be that person of resource and protection for our children. Approved Trained Teachers that voluntarily choose to posses a CCW and be armed on Campuses would also be another great step for the school issues around the country.
Finally I leave you all with these facts to chew on. Mass murders with out a firearm.
Jim Jones = Koolaid
Jack the ripper = a Knife
Lizzy Bordon = AXE
Jeffrey Dahmer = Blunt Force Trauma
John Wayne Gacy = His bear hands

Osama Binladen = box cutters and airplanes

For once I just cant Wait to see your empty non-researched, uneducated, hypocritical responses.

Phil, I disagree, "we" do care. As a parent I care about my child's safety, but know that gun control will not stop someone from possibly harming him. We should not let these tragedies result in knee-jerk reactions that will solve symptoms, not the underlying causes. I don't want my child growing up afraid in some police state, where everyone is paranoid and constantly on the look out for the next allegedly not normal or supposedly suspicious person.

What can we do? Be kind instead of cruel, and teach our kids this valuable lesson. One act of kindness to one of these young folks struggling with whatever issues they face could make or break them. Trust me, I know, I was one of these kids, but I never thought about killing innocent people, only myself. Where does the blame lie? With all of us. We are a violent society, and these mass murderers are just the canaries in the cage. We, as a society, need to do some deep and prolonged soul searching and reevaluate our priorities.

Being retired, I have time to pursue a sideline hobby of mine: suffering fools.

I appreciate your high perfection of the art.

You stand alone at the top of this forum for being 'ridiculous." Take a poll.

Please provide proof that the women and doctors participating in abortions are only liberals.

I bet you can't.

Like the infamous Congressman said, "You lie!"

If you could read you would not accuse me of saying, "all of these children" would go to prison, because, in fact, I wrote, "...a large percentage." I provide a source for my statistic.

Big difference.

How stupid of you.

There is anecdotal evidence of a correlation between Roe v Wade and the decrease in crime starting approximately 15 years later.

My statement has a basis in reality.(http://pricetheory.uchicago.edu/levitt/Papers/DonohueLevittTheImpactOfLegalized2001.pdf)

Yours, on the other hand, is just your skewed opinion.

m j, I hope one day to be able to remove you from my 'fools' list.

But, not yet, not yet.

@ nutso

Were you to be rational, which you do not seem to be here, you could surmise my letter applies to all gun violence.

And, I never mentioned gun control or political agenda, you brought it up.

One thing to consider, nutso, if you are capable of it, is to think that many of the mass-murderers are "law abiding' citizens until they pull the trigger.

Mentally ill, maybe, but still 'law abiding.'

Mr. Bassett provides an accurate scenario for most normal folks when put into a combat situation for the first time.

Big mouths and false bravado can be shut up quickly.

You are, for sure, guilty of at least one of those traits.
