We want out: Arizona secession petition quickly draws backers
Language of the secession petition:
"We petition the Obama Administration to peacefully grant the State of Arizona to withdraw from the United States of America This petition is one of several dozen calling for specific states to secede from the union. They have been posted on a White House website, "We the People," that allows people to put up petitions and seek a response from the administration.

WASHINGTON - Arizona has been in the union more than a century, but some residents appear to want out after the last election.

A petition to let the state secede went up on the White House website Saturday, and by Tuesday it already had received more than half of the 25,000 signatures needed to trigger an official response.

The petition was one of about 45 such petitions from states, some repeats, posted on the White House site this week. It has until Dec. 10 to reach its goal.

White House spokesman Brandon Lepow confirmed that the administration will respond if the petition gets the required number of signatures, but said he could not comment on the specific petition until then.

The White House would not release the identity of the man who started the petition, identified only as Nicholas M. of Gilbert. The White House website gives no more than a last initial and hometown for people who signed the petition, many of whom were from outside Arizona.

But a laughing Gregg Cawley said there should be no fear of another civil war anytime soon as a result of the secession petitions.

"One of the big differences between now and the mid-1800s ... is the tremendous amount of federal funds states receive," said Cawley, a political science professor at the University of Wyoming who has written about the relationship between Western states and the federal government.

"Do they really want to give up all that money? I think it makes the whole thing more symbolic than practical," he said.

Cawley said people who make comments such as those in the petitions are more likely trying to "raise public visibility about their complaints" than actually succeed at secession.

That effort to raise visibility - about 45 of the more than 100 petitions on the White House site call for secession by various states - drew a quick response from other unhappy citizens on the other end of the political spectrum.

One petition asks the Obama administration "to deport everyone that signed a petition to withdraw their state from the United States of America."

Cawley said the warring petitions should not be seen as an omen of more warring to come.

"A state cannot simply say they don't want to be a part of the union anymore," Cawley said.

"I wouldn't say that these people starting these petitions are grumpy enough to actually pick up guns and start a war," he said. "Just at a practical level, it is not going to happen."

Of course secession is an idiotic idea. No one would think it could ever occur. And Maverick, you sure do have a short memory. After Bush won re-election over Gore the Democrats were 10 times worse than the Republicans are now. But as typical liberals you do tend to rewrite history alot. In fact reread all the posts on here and you will find that the liberals are spitting out as much lies and hate as they are accusing the conservatives of doing. And John save your reply please GW did win over Gore.

Please go back to where you came from if you are ashamed of Arizona. [Amerizona] If by chance you were born here immigrate to Mexico or D.C. where you could possibly be ashamed of anywhere you go!
No succession is not an answer but neither is most of the Righty/Lefty posts herein. The problem as stated before is the [545 politicians and counting Czars, useless bureaucrats [?] and agencies] not the true Government of the constitution and Bill of Rights which has been stolen , mis-used and mis-directed by those mentioned above for their personal agendas of fear and greed! This is on a Federal level as with most State Legislation as well. So stop whining and commit yourself to solving problems you see and work your way to the top so you can fix what you observe is Broken!!

All the government has to do is cut off funding for States and they would sink. We had an election and the winner is our President. This is how our democracy works. If you do not like it leave. I have never seen such mis-information the Republican party spews out but the Republicans are the worst losers on the planet. I have never heard of the Democrats doing this after an election.

And the ignorant are still alive and kicking. All southern states that are all takers and whiners. A few haters from each of those states want to give up their usa citizenship. Well OK, it is a done deal. Terminate your citizenship. But your ignorance will not include the state that you now occupy. Please go and do it. Give up your citizenship and leave the USA. Americans are sick and tired of your lack of American backbone. Get out and stay out. And never return.

Well I think the whole succession petition is a very clear example of lack of education and backbone with some fellow citizens of this state and in america. It is all republicans. It is another desparate attempt for attention. I am very tired of these folks and honestly wish that they would just leave the country by self termination of their USA citizenship. This nonsense is moronic and ignorant and these people should be branded, labeled, striped of all benefits, driver license, Social security, medicare, loans, water, electric. Yes this is harsh. Im sick and tired of these terribly ignorant people wasting our time.

In 2010 Arizona got $1.60 cents in federal spending for every $1.00 in taxes paid to the government by Arizona taxpayers. (Are Arizona citizens moochers against welfare?) So right away, to maintain just what we have, Arizona would need to raise taxes 60%. However that is not entirely realistic because many federal programs are administered over the entire country and management costs are shared by the states. So I guess we could eliminate those costs by not embracing the programs but if we want clean air, water and safe food....add another 20% -40% to the tax bill.

Our defense??? How many 3 billion dollar fighter jets and 200 million dollar tanks do we want? Wait, if we are a foreign country relative to the USA then we pay more for defense products and we get last years models not the new, cutting edge equipment. (assuming the USA would sell us those products, if not, we may have to source them elsewhere like china or Russia) Of course we could invest in the research to develop and manufacture those products ourselfs. It's not just the armament though, we will need flight simulators, training and healthcare for our warriors. Add another 50-80% to our tax bill.

Our products...The cost of food, cotton and beef will go simply because federal subsidies are gone. Hopefully the producers will choose to sell their products to Arizona citizens and not to other countries willing to pay more. Perhaps we have to pay import fees for California produce and Florida oranges.

Power companies, specifically APS, will have issues because the United States does not license nuclear power plants in foreign countries. So, being a foreign country we will have to join the IAEA, meeting all of it's regulations..ie $$$$$$$$ Those costs would be passed to the consumers.

Citizens? Would the huge retirement population denounce US Citizenship and through away their Social Security? Probably not, so expect a large percentage of the population to maintain US citizenship and not be responsible for paying Arizona State Income Taxes. I'm sure many would simply take their Country of Arizona Passport and leave.

I like the idea: No more federal military bases, no more socialist social security payments, no more socialist medicare payments, no more highway and building funding, no more CAP water or hydroelectricity no more cotton and farming subsidies, no more ranching subsidies or funding to our universities....That sounds great.

Liberals LOVE to hate.
U see.....there are 3 core values to the liberal.
envy
resentment
greed
The reason the liberal HATES the tea party is greed.
U see, the tea party threatens the liberal rice bowl (liberal see note), by goin' after taxes. Reducing taxes reduces the amount of influence (power) the liberal has. And the liberal LOVES power. Power over U.....taxes, health, food, etc etc etc.....the liberal hates the idea of freedom....oooooooo they say they are for freedom.....but their actions speak louder than words. Most are deluded...they really believe they are helping u......they believe U are too stupid to help yourself. Uncle Joe called these folks the 'useful idiots'.
The liberal is one big control freak!!!!
Note: rice bowl means a persons money or way of making money.

re: Might Be

Dumbocrats from changing are way of life.

If you and MJ are representative of the average conservative republican then it is easy to understand why use liberal progressive socialistic dumbocrats won the election.

I feel people like you and MJ 'are' not shown enough appreciation by us dumbocrats for what you have done for 'our' side. So on behalf of all democrats, thankyou for showing the underbelly of the republican base, and helping us to win the election with your constant stream of intelligent posts to this newspaper. Thankyou
just my two cents

If you think Canada is too cold to move to and if Mexico is out, because someone would kill you there, then try Costa Rica. Mostly english spoken there, and a lot of conservative republicans live there. I just hope if you decide to move because Obama is president, that you don't come back, and that you would take MJ with you.

Well just how long are all you anti-american crybaby conservatives going to secede? Is this secession just for the remainder of the Obama administration, or are you going to secede everytime a democrat is president? If you secede who is going to pay you all the farming and ranching and government subsubsidies you have been collecting? Who is going to continue the social security for grandma and grandpa or maybe your own, for that matter, who is going to deliver you your mail?

Go ahead secede and prove you are as ignorant as the people that started this unamerican and idiotic petition.
just my two cents for what its worth

Article comment by: Six familiar words for the whining right wing...

... words I have heard them scream arrogantly and sneeringly at protesters through the years, or, have seen plastered on their truck bumpers.

Protesters in the 1950's and '60's marching against Southern bigotry heard it

Women's Rights marchers heard it

Anti-Viet Nam war protesters heard it loudly and strongly.

All of these were just causes all were morally correct each of these issues have been settled on the side of the protesters.

It was the the screamers were wrong.

I say back to the whining right-- protesting now mostly their perceived loss their bank accounts:

America, Love it or Leave it!
