Letter: Romney’s comments insulting

Editor:

Soon I will start receiving social security, and complete my first year as a Medicare recipient. Little did I know that I would now be a victim, one of the 47 percent that, in Romney’s words, “are dependent upon government” and “believe that government has a responsibility to care for them.” Until I reflected on his comments, I didn’t realize that people like my mother and father-in-law who don’t pay taxes because their retirement income is too small have an entitlement-mentality. And this after a lifetime of working, scrimping, saving, and paying taxes! I had failed to realize that they were victims.

I also didn’t realize that the government grants students receive that help finance their college education made them victims of an entitlement-mentality.

I find Romney’s comments insulting, broadly-speaking and personally. After a lifetime of working, my parents enjoyed the benefit of Social Security to keep them from poverty because my father’s pension was reduced over 60 percent a few months before being forced into early retirement. This was a cut made by the job creators. If it wasn’t for Medicare, my parents would have been broke. My father-in-law’s pension is around $100 a month, a result of trying to be an entrepreneur. They don’t all get rich. He doesn’t receive a lot from Social Security, and Medicare is a godsend, but according to Romney, and to the people who concurred with him at that fund-raising event, my mother and father-in-law have an entitlement mentality.

Then there is myself. Prior to being eligible for Medicare, I paid for my healthcare insurance. The premium cost a tad over 20 percent of my income, and to afford that I had to have a ten thousand dollar deductible. On top of that, the insurance company decided to deny major medical coverage as a benign result of a routine exam. I would have gladly paid 20% more in taxes to have government sponsored healthcare just to have 100 percent coverage.

Romney is right. I was a victim. I was a victim of insurance bureaucrats who made a profit by charging high premiums while denying and restricting coverage.

There are those who say that Pres. Obama is waging class warfare, and that his policies will destroy America. To the contrary, conflict between classes is not a result of the Obama administration. The widening of the gap between the wealthiest and the rest of us was happening long before Obama became president. Many of the 47 percent that Romney spoke of are victims, but they are not victims of the government. They are victims of the job creators who haven’t created jobs. They are victims of wealth trickling up instead of down. No, not trickled up but poured up.

While I find Romney’s comments insulting, what seems worse to me is that there are plenty of people who agree with him.

Joseph Stack

Personally, I for one would like to keep this country ONE NATION WITHOUT A STATE GOD.

As for politics, why don't we do something radical and not vote in a republicant or demoncrat? See what effect that would have on 4 years. I bet a communist would straiten everything out in 3 years. Can't be any worse than what we have now.

I don't hate repuglicans. I don't hate anyone. What I and so many others find hard to stomach is the small and hard heartedness I see in many of these posts and in the words of some others everywhere. "Me, gimme mine, and keep mine safe from those less fortunate," which people like you seem so quick to judge as unworthy of assistance of any kind.

Frankly, people like you scare me.

So, no president could fix a mess in 4 yrs. Well, Obama inherited some of the mess, but he made a hell of a lot more of a mess of things so there's no way he can dig his way out. Also, Ronald Reagan made some promises back in the 80's when he ran for president and he followed thru with some of those promises in 3 yrs. We had plenty of jobs, gas prices were lower, and the dollar went a lot further. Oh yeah, and he was a Republican. But that's right, you all hate Republicans. Mr Stack, I don't think that Mr. Romney had you in mind when he was speaking, there are an abundance of people who abuse the system out there. We all know this, and this is part of the reason we are in a mess with a lot of things, welfare, healthchare, it all ties in together. Yes, you've paid for your insurance, I've paid for it, I'm sure a lot of people that have responded on here have too, but let's face it, a lot of people in this world do not and have not. So, w/Obamamcare we ALL will be footing the bill, and I don't know about you all, but I for one do NOT want to participate. I work in the healthcare industry and I KNOW this is not the right way to go. I realize that we do need to fix things but this isn't the way to go about it. I also do NOT trust Obama, I feel the same way I have always felt about the man, he has another agenda in store for us, it's my opinion and I'm entitled to it. It's been 4 yrs and there has not been one single improvement, unemployment is worse, the economy is barely existent, gas prices are soaring, and the president is popping up on Letterman and hanging w/George Clooney. What the hell is up with that? He doesn't give a crap about running this country, well, that's not true he cares, just cares about running it straight into the ground. I just don't understand the hold he has on people, I mean he clearly has no clue what he is doing nor does he know how to fix any of the problems. We all have a responsibility to ourselves, our families, this country and to the men and women that risk their lives for us and this country of ours. I for one would like to keep this country ONE NATION UNDER GOD, and not have it turned into some desolate communist country.

Mr. Stack:

I want you to pay attention! There are 47% of you "parasites" living here in the Verde Valley. I do not have to identify any of you you already know who you are.

You suckle at the teat of government and are completely dependent upon government for everything you have.

GOP candidate Mitt Romney identified you for us [during one of his private fundraisers] and we can take his word for it that you are all lazy, good-for-nothing bums who suck the economic life out of the rest of us with your dependency upon government.

If you are a business person, relying upon all of those government tax credits or other government subsidies, shame on you. If you are a corporation, relying upon all of those federal, state, county and municipal tax credits from the government, shame on you.

If you rely upon VA benefits, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, welfare ,workers compensation and or unemployment insurance, food stamps, etc., shame on you.

You veterans who suck at the teat of government with your VA checks must be stopped. You college students who rely upon government largess to fund your education must be stopped. You seniors who rely upon Social Security and Medicare must be stopped.

None of you deserve anything from the rest of us decent, hard-working taxpayers who never ask for anything from their government and rely solely upon ourselves, our rugged individualism to succeed.

You know who you are! Stop relying upon government subsidies for your income. Send back those VA, and Social Security checks. Get off your duff and earn your living the old fashioned way like Mitt Romney---inherit it.

We know who you are and we will no longer tolerate or allow any of you to suckle at the teat of government any longer. With the election of Romney/Ryan we will put an end to your bleeding us dry of our hard fought and rightfully obtained greed!

So, either get up off your lazy duffs and go to work or starve. We, like our savior Mitt Romney, no longer care what happens to you and we are not responsible for you. You have only yourselves to blame for your plight and have no right to expect any aid and comfort from your fellow citizens. What do you people think this is anyway, a democracy?

The time has come to acknowledge that government has so corrupted our country that we must eradicate government from our lives and replace it with private, corporate interests that will rely only upon the thing that matters---the Profit Motive.

When I observe you in the stores spending MY money that you have not only have not earned but have no right to possess it offends me. That is MY money! How dare you accept government largess that is intended only for those who deserve it----------people like me and Mitt!

I hope this motivates you to reconsider your decadent lifestyles, funded by other peoples labor. It is appalling that so many of you steal from the rest of us to feed, clothe and house yourselves in such opulence.

I see you everywhere I travel in the Verde Valley and I cannot help but wonder about the immoral lifestyles you enjoy on MY dime. It is just nauseating to think that I have given one single dime of MY money to people like you.

The cure is at hand. Romney/Ryan in 2012 will end the gravy train for all of you and then you will appreciate just how much you have been stealing from others by allowing yourselves to rely upon government handouts.

Far better that you stand on the street corner begging for food than accept one cent from government. No more handouts for people for medical care, either. There are far too many of you people out there anyway. You breed like cockroaches and the more you breed the more it costs the good, decent, hard-working people like me.

Have you no shame? Where is your self-respect? Better that you die from exposure, disease or famine than steal one more dime of my money. No more free treatment at emergency rooms, either for any of you. Pay your way when you get sick or die, and die quietly, too.

I know you thought you were safe. You thought you could continue to live parasitically off the largess of those of us who actually earn our way in this world.

You thought you could keep a low profile and stay under our radar and we would not notice that you are bleeding us dry of our vital life energy---our money!

But, thanks to Romney/Ryan you were wrong. They have awakened in us awareness of your parasitic position in our society and of the need to eradicate the government that sustains you.

Just wait! When the corporations take over America then you will either work or die! That is precisely what our founding fathers envisioned for us.

They imagined a society in which the rugged individuals strived and thrived and the rest of you served and suffered or withered away and died.

The fact that there are now 47% of you in America is appalling. How you managed to achieve such high numbers is beyond me. If you were weeds stifling out the vegetables in our garden, you would have been eradicated long ago.

So, wake up, get up and get out there and start earning your way in this world. I owe you nothing. If you cannot hack it, that is just too bad for you.

Expect nothing from me! I will only acknowledge your meager existence if you support yourself by dint of your own labor, using your own money to support yourselves.

The time for suckling is over. The spigot of government largess must be turned off, and like a fledgling bird you must leave the nest flying away to whatever fate befalls you.

That is the promise of a Romney/Ryan ticket. A promise that will be kept with the eradication of all government subsidies to individual citizens [with one exception], and that will restore America to its former greatness.

No more SS, no Medicare, no Medicaid, no free lunch at all. Survive or die! The only ones deserving of government support are those in the Military Industrial Complex who defend this country against the pagan Muslim hordes seeking to destroy our Judeo-Christian nation.

I have it on good authority that one of the very first laws enacted by the Romney/Ryan administration will be a law that prevents any person receiving federal assistance of any kind from voting. There will, of course, be an exception for corporations since they represent a special class of citizen and deserve to vote as a collective entity in the name of ALL of their employees.

By allowing corporations to vote instead of the actual voters/employees who work for the corporation we can assure that only the interests of REAL Americans dedicated to the profit motive will be represented. Voting will be streamlined and made so very much simpler under a Romney/Ryan administration.

Furthermore, this will act as a job stimulus because each corporation will receive the number of votes they cast based upon actual employees. In other words, the more employees a corporation employs the more votes they will have in the election. A brilliant solution to the problem of voter fraud. We will rely upon Diebold machines to do the actual vote counting to assure reliability of the outcome.

Finally, with the election of Mitt Romney I can witness, in my life time the completion of the Reagan Revolution and this messy democracy that I have lived in my entire life can be dispensed with in favor of corporate government.

Romney/Ryan in 2012 for a new [OLD] America!

To Turning problems on their head! You should get your story strait before you speak! Obama never promised anything, he just said when he was elected that he would the issues you speak of a priority. You blame the wrong person, when you should blame the Republicans who fought against issues Obama wanted to work on getting changed and passed.
Romney is a Troll who want's you to pay $50.000 for a plate for lunch, pay a high cost to cross the bridge for your medical care and pay more for your health care, higher Taxes for the middle class and poor, and cost of living. So go pay for your $50.000 plate and support Romney. No elected President could fix the mess the previous President left behind in 4 years and Obama deserves to be given the chance to do what he can the next 4 years.
Don't be a victim of Romney and his bureaucrats who support him.

If you don't like it now, (and who does), why on Earth would you vote for Mr. Obama?

President Obama upon taking office inherited a bad situation, but what he's done since then has made the economy much worse.

The incontrovertible evidence for this is the sinking median household income, a statistic that cannot be spun by either side. The MHI is dropping, and the rate of decline has increased since the recovery started in 2009, mid-way through Mr. Obama's term.

This is why people are not better off now than they were 4 years ago, even though we are statistically in an economic recovery.

The president and Democrats have irresponsibly run trillion dollar deficits every year, with no end in sight. They are crushing us and future generations under mountains of debt.

The so-called reform of health care will cost a trillion more than our unreformed system over the next decade. And reduces choices.

These are facts. Business don't want to hire with massive new tax burdens, regulations, and uncertainty from a president that thinks profit is evil. He states if you have a business "you didn't build that".

We are headed for a European style economic decline unless we change course.

As a nation we are poorer and this hurts most the lower and middle economic classes. You can try to blame the Republicans, but in reality the Democrats controlled both houses of congress from 2006 to 2010.

If you think the economic policies of the Democrats and President Obama are working and you vote for 4 more years of the same, then the facts say you are asking for more impoverishment and decline of this country.

Why would anyone do this?

Sometimes it's hard to see things for what they really are, especially when there's so much political propaganda from both sides. But these are the unmistakable trends are when you look at them objectively.

President Obama took office 4 years ago with promises of hope and change, but sadly we've seen that positive vision collapse in epic failure, only to be replaced by anger, divisiveness, blame, and bitterness.

Is this the kind of country you want? Why would anyone vote for him again?

I encourage everyone to cut through the hype and think for themselves. Cast aside the political partisanship, look at the facts, and take an open minded view of each candidate.

Look objectively at each candidate's track record and qualifications and reach your own conclusion. The choice couldn't be clearer. Vote not for an illusion, but vote for the one you think is best qualified and most capable of improving our situation.

So you were insulted. Sometimes the truth hurts. Our society no longer cares about right or wrong. We do not want to get our feelings hurt. I've been on Social Security for 10 years. There were two years that we stopped receiving a Cost Of Living Allowance. That happened on Obama's watch. Pay more attention to what the politicians do and not what they say.

Article comment by: And the beat goes on

And to make matters worse, a person like myself with a $10,000.00 deductible plan is stuck with an $7,700.00 bill from the ER for a 3 hr. stay to pass a kidney stone. When VVMC billing was called to arrange a payment plan, the lady asked me why I needed that. She said “If you don’t have the money, why did you buy the high deductible plan?” I had to inform her that I couldn’t afford the premium of the low deductible plan. As a matter of fact if this wouldn’t have been a forced COBRA conversion, there would be no insurance at all due to pre-existing conditions. To add insult to injury, the hospital needed 3 months of bank statements, earnings and full disclosure of all financial information to authorize a payment plan greater than one year. How sad. There was a time medical bills could be paid off at a rate someone could afford. No wonder so many uninsured and under insured have to file “medical bankruptcies” or just go without healthcare to an early grave. But there is hope—the first part of Obamacare is in place for those people who have pre-existing conditions. It is called the PCIP (Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan). The criterion for coverage is that a citizen has been without insurance coverage for 6 months and has proof that they have been denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions. The premium is very affordable. The website is: https://www.pcip.gov. Check it out if you’re not too embarrassed to be counted in the 47%.

Two minutes of this "video" were conveniently cut out. Don't play into the Main Stream Media diatribe....

I don't see you getting all upset about Obama admitting he's a Socialist (once again) and destroying this country. Not like Democrats actually vet their candidates.

Romney is such a big deal since the country is bankrupt, lies from the Bozo Admin about muslim videos, cover-ups about the 9/11 attack that killed an Ambassador and the rest of the world just about being on fire. No, we can't have your poor feelings hurt.

Excellent letter! You absolutely nailed it!

Many of the 47 percent are victims of Reagan's voodoo economic policy which has nearly obliterated the middle class.

Many more are victims of Romney-style vulture capitalism which has shipped manufacturing jobs offshore.

And we're all victims of repeated tax cuts which allow the rich to pay lower tax rates than the middle class.

Romney wants to continue all of these policies.

Thank you for speaking up, Mr. Stack. Romney's comments were reprehensible and, I agree with you, the fact that there's even 1% of our population who'd say they're on the same page with him speaks for the outrageous level of ignorance these people choose to live in...

Anyone who calls themselves civilized human beings must rally against these illusions the GOP insists on maintaining.
