05-01 Future Chefs 8686

Wednesday, April 27, Mountain View Preparatory school in Cottonwood hosted the Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District's second Future Chefs competition, a partnership with Sodexo, a quality of life services organization that provides food service within the district. Six of the district's students created their favorite healthy breakfasts and were judged based on taste and presentation. The contestants were Cottonwood Elementary School fifth graders Macy Randall and Evan Flannery, Oak Creek School fourth graders Alize Robinson and Willie Hunt, and Mountain View Preparatory's Carlos Lattanzi, fifth grade and Hope Calandra, third grade. Macy Randall, pictured at left with cafeteria manager Cindy Barkman, won first place for her breakfast pizza pita. Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District Director of Business Services David Snyder tends to like "a more savory than sweet breakfast, and [Macy's] combination of vegetables, ham and cheese was very good. I also was very impressed that she added a hollandaise sauce to the recipe." Snyder also said that "all the dishes were impressive, the students did an excellent job of preparation and presentation, and all tasted good." (Photos by Bill Helm)
