Cottonwood man killed when vehicle rolled
A Cottonwood man was killed in a one-vehicle rollover last Saturday night just before midnight. Joel Schmid, 21, was killed when his car rolled and he was ejected on Interstate-17 south of Cordes Junction.

Negotiations start to hire Doug Bartosh as Cottonwood city manager
Mayor Diane Joens admitted that she agonized over the pros and cons of the decision. She said, "We are deciding for our future" and Chief Bartosh has "excellent leadership." The mayor revealed her own thinking as she went on, "It will be different than when Brian was here."

Cottonwood soldier returns home in time for holidays
The business of war and the celebration of Christmas make strange bedfellows.

The inherent dichotomy of celebrating peace while the killing goes on has made for miles of column inches in newspapers, pages of personal memoirs and more than its share of both heartbreak and joy.

None of these stories, however, tops the ones about returning soldiers, making it home in time to celebrate with their families.

Sgt. Gilbert Phelps of Cottonwood has, happily, found himself the subject of just such a story this week.

Thelander agrees to $75,000 restitution, probation
Former Verde valley educator Rich Thelander has entered into a plea agreement with the state of Maryland related to charges of embezzling almost $120,000 from his ex-wife.

Thelander, who was known as Richard Brueckner when he was a resident of Ocean Pine, Md., has agreed to pay $75,000 in restitution.
