10/26/2010 3:03:00 PM Painted wine barrels go on display for Verde Valley wine industry
COTTONWOOD - The Cottonwood Chamber of Commerce is about to roll out the barrels and it is way more than just a barrel of fun. The Painted Barrels project will serve an important role to propel the fledgling Verde Valley wine industry and its Wine Trail and the art works will showcase participating artists and increase tourism.
Artists submitted proposals before a screening committee.
The project will kick-off Thursday night when the 40 Painted Barrels will be on display at the Yavapai College Foundation event at the College.
Friday, the decorative barrels will be delivered to sponsoring businesses.
Like the Javelinas on Parade in Sedona and the painted cows in Chicago, the Painted Barrels will attract attention to the area's numerous wineries as well as to the art of the valley. In addition, the sale of the barrels will help fund the viticulture wine program at Yavapai College.
The barrels will be auctioned off in the spring. But the shops where they are placed will have the first right of refusal to purchase them for their site.
