COTTONWOOD – Pillsbury Wine Company at 1012 N. Main St. in Old Town Cottonwood offers wine tasting and much more. Lisa Pender, tasting room manager, said the retail outlet also caters private parties and wine pairings with selections such as chocolate and desserts.

In addition to bottled wine representing Pillsbury and Freitas Vineyard of Cottonwood, the retail store sells espresso, smoothies and specialty coffee drinks. Miscellaneous items such as wine bottle spoon rests and wine glasses are offered along with shirts.

Lisa said the business is located in the Verde Valley because the wine is made in Camp Verde. “We figured that it would be best to open a tasting room nearby,” she said. “We also had huge support from other local wineries and the Verde Valley Wine Consortium. It’s a great location between Sedona and Jerome.”

Sam Pillsbury is the owner, vintner and winemaker. Lindsey Higginson is the executive director.

This is the company’s first tasting room, but Lisa said the company has done many wine festivals and sells wholesale around the state.

“Sam Pillsbury is one of the leaders in the New Zealand film industry,” Lisa said. He has been involved in some aspect of writing the screenplay, directing or producing well-known movies including Free Willy 3, The Quiet Earth, Starlight Hotel, and Where the Red Fern Grows.

The retail business employs five people at present but hopes that will soon expand to 10 employees.

Lisa said the business serves the Verde Valley, but she believes it will become a tourist draw for the area. “We are part of a growing industry of not only the Verde Valley but for the State of Arizona,” she said.

She said the wine industry is an industry that can survive economic downturns.

Lisa is very optimistic about the wine business and the Verde Valley. “The Verde Valley will only grow in the wine industry,” she said. “Cottonwood is really starting to pull together and making sure that it has all of its ducks in a row. So when the economy rolls back around, we will be ready to move ahead with it.”

Lisa said she thinks the wine industry in the Verde Valley and Pillsbury Wine Company will double each year.

Hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon-6 p.m. on Sunday.
