9/11/2010 3:18:00 PM Painted Barrel Project: Participate in public art
The "Painted Barrel Project" is a public art exhibit being coordinated through the Cottonwood Chamber of Commerce that will celebrate artistic excellence and diversity in the Verde Valley. This project will provide an opportunity to raise funds to benefit the Yavapai College Viticulture Program, as well as marketing the Verde Valley as a premiere winery and arts destination through funds raised by the Cottonwood Chamber of Commerce. The Painted Barrels will become a fixture throughout the Verde Valley and become an identifying factor to the region. The sponsors of this project will be area businesses, organizations, and wineries.
The project will showcase the participating artists, create partnerships in the community, promote the Verde Valley Wine Trail, increase tourism to the Verde Valley, and provide a fun experience for everyone involved. This project follows the successful "Javelinas on Parade" in Sedona and Chicago's "Cows on Parade" exhibits. Placed around the city of Sedona, there were 50 artistic, life-size javelinas, and the Arizona Office of Tourism estimates that the project brought in over 130,000 tourism dollars.
The Painted Barrel Project will be comparable, beginning with 38 barrels. The success of this project will be measured in many far-reaching ways for the Verde Valley.
The project is a community effort being coordinated through the Cottonwood Chamber of Commerce. It has a novel approach with community-wide impact using wine barrels that will be transformed into works of art.
This is a great opportunity for participating artists to be involved with an exciting public art experience. People will tour the Verde Valley and grasp the important connection with the area and art. Sponsors and artists will be matched to create a harmonious accord throughout the Verde Valley.
Once approved, each artist must submit a proposal of his/her Painted Barrel. Every artist will receive a authentic, neutral oak wine barrel. The size of each barrel will vary, approximately 35-by-28 inches. The artist may paint the barrel using any medium; however, it is required that the structural integrity be maintained. Each proposal must include a detailed drawing of the concept using an 8.5-by-11-inch template.
All designs must be appropriate for family viewing. No designs will be accepted or considered that include sexual, religious, or commercial messages.
Modification from the artist's original proposal will require re-submission for approval. Failure to
re-submit new designs for consideration/approval will result in forfeiture of the $100 honorarium.
Deadline for all design proposals and documents is no later than Friday, Oct. 1.
Once approved as a participating artist, each artist will submit the template and a brief description of their proposed design. Unless otherwise authorized, all materials must be able to withstand being outdoors.
The barrels may be primed. Artists are responsible for purchasing and supplying the materials necessary to complete the design.
The Artist Selection Committee will review all proposals for compliance with the project guidelines. The Committee will be solely responsible for coordinating the match of the sponsor and each artist. The selection process will take place over a specified time; and therefore, notification to the artists will be an ongoing process. There is no guarantee that a sponsor will select the artists' proposal.
All proposals will become the property of the "Painted Barrel Project," Cottonwood Chamber of
Commerce. Artists will receive credit and recognition for the barrel design throughout the project. The artist's name will appear on a plaque attached to the base of the barrel.
Deadline for Painted Barrel completion is no later than Oct. 25.
The Implementation date for barrel placement is Nov. 1.
In the spring of 2012, the barrels will be auctioned at the "Painted Barrel" event. Each barrel host will have the first right of refusal to purchase the barrel at their location for $275 prior to the auction. The successful bidder of those barrels being auctioned will become the owner of the barrel.
