When you were growing up who was that special person that always made you feel important, always listened to what you had to say and most importantly, helped to shape the person you are today?
Now imagine never having that relationship. At Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters there are over hundreds of kids on the waiting list for someone like you to become their Big Brother or Big Sister. Most of the kids in our program are raised by a single parent or by their grandparents. It doesn’t take much at all, no money, no special qualities, just a few hours a month is all it takes.
Meet 13-year-old Destinee. She recently moved to the area and lives with her grandmother. Her main interest is fashion design, and she loves to shop when she has some spending money. She also is an avid reader of fiction and mysteries. She also likes swimming, photography, going to movies, bowling, arts & crafts, painting and drawing.
She would love to go horseback riding and camping. Destinee would really like to learn to sew and to improve her drawing skills. She likes playing softball, basketball, tennis and soccer. When she is home from school she does her homework, watches TV, reads and plays Nintendo DS.
Destinee has solid goals to do well in school, stay in college, and be successful. She says she works hard “to make my family proud of me and be responsible, for my grandmother.” When she grows up, she’d like to be a fashion designer, teacher and a riding instructor for kids.
Destinee’s grandmother would like her to have a trusted friend she can have fun with, go shopping, talk to about issues of growing up and peer pressure.
