Boris finally finds a home with help from Jerome Humane Society
There was no exit strategy for Boris. The handsome, soulful pit bull mix had arrived at the Verde Valley Humane Society (VVHS) in bad shape. He had an intractable injury on his left front foot. The VVHS had tried various supportive treatments but the burly mutt just wouldn't leave the foot alone. He continued to re-injure the foot with almost willful regularity. The paw was raw and Boris was becoming nippy. Despite his sunny personality, he was headed down a bad road.

Resources Transition Veterans Into Entrepreneurs
Question: I'm a retired veteran, but am certainly not ready for the rest home. I would like to open my own small business using the skills I acquired during my military career, but I'm not certain how best to proceed. Can SCORE offer some guidelines?

Answer: Like many others, you've served in the Armed Forces and have gained valuable skills, training, and personal growth. Fortunately, the opportunities don't need to end once you've returned to civilian life. There are several programs available to help veterans transition to new roles as owners of their own small businesses.

Grief Hill: Old route, new mission
It's difficult to climb and even the name doesn't allow for much hope, but Grief Hill is changing again. The route already has depth in Verde Valley history. Now another chapter is being written.

Yavapai County historian Jean Cross, writing for the Sharlot Hall Museum, quips that the pioneers who established the arduous route through Grief Hill could not have known that the route they chose was probably the most difficult and so it persisted formally for only five years from 1865 through 1870. It is likely that a "crude track" into the Valley followed where hay cutters operated or possibly rancher King Woolsey, she continues.
