Square dance lessons start up again on Tuesday with the Cottonwood Roadrunners at the Civic Center in Old Town.
If you ever wanted to learn how to square dance or would like to brush up your dancing skills, now is the time.
The Cottonwood Roadrunners is once again offering beginning and advanced square dance lesson, starting Sept. 10, and going through early January, with an additional run of classes from January through May.
Square dancing has evolved over the years and is not the same old thing many people did in grade school. It is now called Modern Square Dancing and is enjoyed the world over. One could literally fly to Australia, or Japan and be dancing with folks from that culture. The calls, or directions, are all done in English, no matter the local language.
"We have several callers, who work for us calling our monthly dances, that have made an amazing career of traveling the world, calling dances," said Boyd Copper, president, Cottonwood Roadrunners.
Many folks think, if they can't dance ... this isn't for them. Actually, if you can walk, follow directions and listen, you can square dance, Cooper explained.
"The veteran teacher of our classes, starts out with the basic moves, and builds on the foundation you form from his lessons. Most folks are amazed at how much they enjoy this low impact form of exercise, and furthermore, how quickly they learn the different calls, or moves.
"There are always experienced dancers, there to help and the teacher has the patience of a saint. It's done in a safe, non-threatening environment, with lots of folks, learning along with you. No special clothes are needed, and one of the best parts of the whole deal is, you do NOT need a partner! There are always plenty of willing dancers to share the floor with you, not matter what your skill level might be. The hall is always filled my smiles, laughter, and good music. After the first three weeks, several new calls are taught each week, and by January, you will simply be amazed of what you have accomplished."
The first lesson is free, and then $5 per night.
"We are taking new students, on Sept. 10th, 17th, and 24th. After that, we focus on building on what you have learned, to help make you an accomplished square dancer," said Cooper.
Classes are held at the Cottonwood Civic Center in Old Town, at 6:30 p.m.
"This is a great way to meet new folks, get some low impact exercise -- both physically and mentally, and just have a lot of good clean fun," Cooper said.
