COTTONWOOD - The Verde Valley Fire Academy is in session and the cadets are working hard at learning how to become fire fighters.
For the past two Saturdays they have been under the watchful eyes of veteran fire fighter instructors, learning how to properly raise and lower ladders; deploy and reroll hoses; and how to utilize hydraulic cutters and spreaders for taking apart vehicles.
The days are long and arduous, but for these dedicated individuals it is an opportunity to purse their dreams of one day working as a member of an engine crew and the chance to utilize their life saving skills everyday they come to work.
On Saturday, March 30, staring at 9 a.m. they will experience their first live fire. With the hoses charged, they will take turns advancing on and battling a vehicle fire.
On Wednesday, April 24, at about 7 p.m., under controlled conditions, cadets will face a wall of flame as they work together to put out a propane tank fire. This is always an excellent photo opportunity as the flames reach heights of more than 15 feet, lighting up the evening sky.
