CAMP VERDE - One of the secrets to living a good life is learning to take advantage of a bad situation.

Imagine, for instance, you come to work one morning and water is puddling on the front step of your office. You open the door and the puddle becomes a wave.

A look inside reveals the furniture is all but floating, the drywall and the baseboards are soaked, and perhaps most annoying, pieces of the ceiling are hanging down, nearly reaching the floor. In one spot, there is a clear view skyward.

That's exactly what happened last August to Steve and Barbara Goetting, owners of The Horn Saloon in Camp Verde, when a summer monsoon, a small leak and a roof repair gone awry linked up to create the perfect storm.

"It was a morning I won't forget," Steve says.

Four months later, though, "The Horn" is back open. The roof has been replaced and is better than ever. The ceiling tiles are new. The drywall and baseboards have been replaced and a new coat of paint, a slightly different color scheme, now covers the walls.

But what you won't see are all the improvements and additions the couple decided to make while the mess up front was fixed.

"We got a do-over, which has been nice. It was a chance to make the place bigger, better and faster," Steve says.

Over the last four months major changes have taken place in back. Fryers were added to the kitchen, as was a grill and a new overhead hood. The number of taps delivering craft beers from the cooler has been increased to 20.

The additions are reflected in a larger menu that now includes such things as The Horn Burger (whiskey brushed, shaved onions, bacon, avocado, havarti cheese and roasted chili aioli), Horn Fries and grilled salmon.

Also new to the menu are steaks. The Horn now offers a grilled T-bone as well as an Argentinean grilled hanger steak, served across grilled flatbread with a chimichuri sauce.

"We will also be focusing more on Southwestern wines and Arizona wines in particular," Barbara says.

The Horn Saloon is located at 348 S. Main St. and is open daily, Sunday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. for reservations call (928) 567-7229.
