Erev Shabbat services this week at JCSVV
Shalom. The Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley invites everyone to Erev Shabbat services, Friday evening, Feb. 24, at 7:30 p.m. led by Rabbi Alicia Magal. The oneg will be in honor of Rabbi Alicia’s birthday, and will include her mother Nika’s family recipe for babka (Polish bundt cake). Saturday morning, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m., all are invited to Torah study, which is divided into a two topics of discussion: first, a short presentation of the Torah portion of the week: Terumah, Exodus 25:1-27:19, about the precious and beautiful offerings brought by the Children of Israel to build and decorate the Tabernacle which housed the ark of the covenant during the Israelite’s wanderings in the desert.
The second focus of our study is on the later books of the Hebrew Bible. This week’s focus is on the story of the young King David. Aspects of archeology, ancient literature, and psychological insights enhance our study and discussion. Potluck dairy/vegetarian luncheon follows.
Saturday evening Feb. 25, Persons of the Year event honoring Hershelle and Mark Kann and Penny Williams, with music and refreshments.
Sunday, Feb. 26. 10 a.m. Religious school for students 5-12 years of age.
Wednesday, Feb. 29, 8:30 a.m. egalitarian morning minyan.
At 5 p.m. Women’s Havurah meeting on Rosh Hodesh, the Hebrew month of Adar, in which Purim is celebrated. We will explore the two very different women characters - Esther and Vashti - described in the megillah, the scroll containing the dramatic tale of Purim. One of the themes of Purim is “hiddenness” - exemplified by Esther, the beautiful queen who saves the Jewish people by her courage and by knowing when and how to reveal her secret.
