‘Restoring Faith, Restoring Justice’ at SUUF

On Sunday, Feb. 19, please join the Rev. Paul Langston-Daly and the Sedona Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in exploring faith and justice in the U.S. According to Rev. Langston-Daly, “Our criminal justice system is based on a punitive model and is funded by conservative groups that support private prisons. Is this a workable model? Is this justice? Are there alternatives that promote restoring relationships and community care?” The service will be held at 10 a.m. at the Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley, 100 Meadowlark Drive, Sedona. The musical guest will be Jim Scott, an acoustic guitarist, singer, and composer of powerful music that furthers the ideals of ecology, justice, and peace.

SUUF serves Sedona and the Greater Verde Valley. Its mission statement reads, “Our Fellowship is a place to grow in mind and spirit.  We promote a loving, just, and sustainable world through service, learning and action.” For more information, call 928-310-8171 or visit www.SedonaUU.org.

Alpha course at SOJ Lutheran

Alpha is a course that covers the basics of Christianity.  It answers questions like “Who is Jesus?” and “Why did he die?” The Alpha course begins at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church on Wednesday, February 29 from 6-8:30 p.m. and lasts 10 weeks.  Each week an informal meal is offered (suggested donation: $5), guests listen to a talk on how Christianity approaches the question at hand, then small groups gather for discussion.  Alpha is a worldwide phenomenon in over 160 countries.  It has run in tens of thousands of schools, prisons, homes and churches of all denominations.  It’s given more than 17 million people the opportunity to explore the meaning of life.

To register, call the church office at 928 634-4102 or see the website at http://sojaz.co. Spirit of Joy is located at 330 Scenic Drive in Clarkdale, at the corner of Scenic and Old Jerome Highway.

Ash Wednesday at Mtn. View UMC

A time of quiet meditation and imposition of ashes is available on Ash Wednesday at Mountain View United Methodist Church

The Wednesday, Feb. 22 service, led by the Rev. Laura O’Neil, will be from 7:30 to 9 a.m., with people welcome to attend any time between 7:30 and 9 a.m. at the church’s Worship Center, 901 S. 12th St., Cottonwood.

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, when Christians throughout the world start a season of penance, reflection and even fasting in readiness for Christ’s resurrection Easter Sunday, April 8.

The Mountain View UMC event also will have a healing prayer and an opportunity to be one-on-one with the Rev. O’Neil.

Separately, the church will have a series of Wednesday evening services starting Wednesday, Feb. 29, to which the public is invited. Led by Pastor O’Neil and the Rev. David Treadwell, the event begins at 6 p.m., and is preceded by a soup and salad meal in Fellowship Hall.

The informal “come-as-you-are” service will be based on First Century Pauline churches, featuring song, prayer, spiritual gifts, fellowship and communion.
