Adopt For Life Center to be integral part of community

Good Morning, Verde Valley! I would like to introduce myself. My name is Gary DeGeronimo and I have been given the unique privilege of serving as the Executive Director of the Adopt For Life Center For Animals, formerly known as the Verde Valley Humane Society.

I come to you with a good background in animal behavior and care as well as shelter management. I would like to bring my experience, combined with the great staff and volunteers of Adopt For Life, to create a community animal care facility that Cottonwood and the surrounding areas not only require, but more importantly, deserve.

Of course, I have a vision, both short-term as well as long-term, and some in between. Although realistically, there are immediate needs that I must address to keep the present shelter up and running. So let me share with you just some of my thoughts on how I would like to make the Adopt For Life Center For Animals a part of the community.

You will soon see a major educational branch to the Adopt For Life Center focusing on pet care, pet behavior along with obedience classes and behavior management workshops.

We hope to soon have informational handouts for pet owners to assist in dealing with pet issues, and are now working on a Behavior Helpline to offer advice from experienced animal handlers in hopes of resolving issues between a pet and its guardian with the goal of keeping them together -- forever.

Along with the educational information for the general community, we will also be “arming” our volunteers with the ability to train our canine residents, and yes, even our felines friends. We will have workshops for our volunteers so they can give your future furry family member a jump start on his or her education.

With that in mind, we will have many opportunities for the community to volunteer at the shelter. We always are in need of folks who understand the importance of giving a shelter dog or cat the love and attention they have been looking for.

In the weeks ahead, I will be presenting to the community many ways of supporting this great organization.

Everything from Open Houses, Special Adoption Events to my personal favorite, “Cruizin’ For The Critters” Motorcycle Ride for the Animals, and much more.

In the meantime, I invite you to visit us on Facebook or check out our Website. And for a great shopping experience, visit the Adopt For Life’s The Paw Boutique Thrift Store at 791 North Main in Old Town Cottonwood, right at the curve.

Our Thrift Store Manager Linda and her Assistant Nancy, along with all the fantastic volunteers have created a new “Thrift Store Experience” just for your pleasure. You won’t be disappointed.

And I would also invite you to stop by the Shelter and say “Hi.” And then come by often to see the changes we hope to make to this fabulous Shelter.

I will keep you informed of Shelter Happenings in upcoming articles. As we continue to grow into a magnificent community organization, we will be able to offer even more to the community we serve. And I will take my role in this endeavor very seriously, knowing that Cottonwood and the surrounding communities will come together to support “THEIR” Adopt For Life Center For Animals.

As a former Board Member and current volunteer at the Adopt for Life Center for Animals I want to say how happy I am that we have such an experienced and dedicated individual, Gary DeGeronimo, to run the organization. The Center and the animals will profit from his expertise and I hope the Verde Valley community will do everything they can to welcome him and support him in his vision for the lost and abandoned animals that the center takes in.
