This week at JCSVV

Shalom. The Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley invites everyone to Erev Shabbat services, Friday evening, Feb. 10, at 7:30 p.m. led by Rabbi Alicia Magal. Saturday morning, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m., all are invited to Torah study, which is divided into a two topics of discussion: first, a short presentation of the Torah portion of the week: Yitro, Exodus 18:1-20:23. The Children of Israel are in the Sinai Desert, after fleeing bondage in Egypt. Moses prepares the people, camped at Mt. Sinai, for receiving the Ten Commandments, which become the foundation on which Israel is to build a life of justice and holiness.

The second focus of our study is on the later books of the Hebrew Bible. This week’s focus is on the story of Samuel the Prophet. Aspects of archeology, ancient literature, and psychological insights enhance our study and discussion.  Potluck dairy/vegetarian luncheon follows.

Sunday, Feb. 12. 10 a.m. Religious school meets.

Tuesday, Feb. 14, 12:30 p.m. Introduction to Judaism for conversion preparation. At 2-4 p.m. Adult Learning Circle taught by Rabbi Magal on Transformational Tales, including “The Seven Beggars,” by Rabbi Nachman of Bratislav.

Wednesday, Feb. 15, 8:30 a.m. egalitarian morning minyan. At 7 p.m. Educational series by Rabbi Levertov on the mystical meanings of the Hebrew “Aleph-Bet”, and a discussion about the Torah portion of the week.

Thursday, Feb. 16, 7 p.m. Women’s Havurah meeting.

The JCSVV is a warm, welcoming, egalitarian congregation, unaffiliated with a particular stream of Judaism.  The synagogue is located at 100 Meadowlark Drive, off Hwy 179 just south of the Chapel Road roundabout. Call (928) 204-1286 or visit www.jcsvv.org.
