This week at Grace Lutheran
Deacon Gary Henze
Grace Community Lutheran Church

Grace Community Lutheran Church, 5100 Stevenson, Rimrock, meets for Sunday Service at 10:30 a.m.

At some time in almost every persons life, the question of why does God allow bad things to happen comes up. It is a question as old as the earliest books of the bible. It is no easier to answer today than it was at any time in the past. Phillip Yancy in his book “The Bible Jesus Read” notes that along with the praises of the psalms there are also those questions and laments with the same questions being asked. Why God? Or how long must we wait? You may have had these same thoughts or certainly know someone who has.

For those of us in the Christian faith, how do we answer these impossible questions? I say impossible because the are things in this world known only to God, and the why of suffering is one of them. While this is difficult to understand, there is a truth about God, that helps us to get through these situations. Later in his book, Yancy pointed something out. The first disciples, the ones who followed Christ and actually were with Him saw how God felt about people. The saw Jesus act with compassion towards the sick and the lepers. They saw Jesus care about and offer forgiveness to tax collectors and adulteresses.

The questions the Israelites asked in the Old Testament which wondered if God cares, had an answer. In your life, when you have someone ask if God cares, you can tell them how Jesus was toward the suffering and lost when He was on earth. Even better we can all follow Jesus example and show that same compassion to all we meet, a listening caring person can provide a lot of comfort just by being there.

And we can do something even more important, both for those who are hurting or are troubled and also for ourselves. We can remember the ultimate demonstration of love in the universe. God sent Jesus to suffer and die on the cross. That shows how God truly feels about us. When those impossible questions come up, always remember that truth. God loves you enough to send His Son. And while Jesus was on earth He was  full of compassion for all those who hurt. That is the truth about God.
