COTTONWOOD – Walking into the Candy Corral at 1028 N. Main St. in Old Town Cottonwood is akin to walking back in time – into a time when the local confectionery would pay a kid 2 cents for returning a soda bottle, and that kid could buy his or her favorite piece of candy with the same two pennies.

Prices aren’t the same, but Candy Corral offers the same kind of selection as the old-fashioned candy store.

The Candy Corral offers gourmet popcorn, homemade fudge, cupcakes, ice cream, glazed pecans, shaved ice and old-fashioned floats and malts. The store sells more than 2,000 kinds of candy, including a selection of more than 50 sundaes, 80 flavors of saltwater taffy, fresh-squeezed lemonade and every known flavor of Jelly Belly.

“We are offering different products,” said Colleen Hattan, “such as gourmet caramel apples, Rice Krispies on a stick, frozen bananas and so much more.”

Colleen and her husband, Bill Hattan, opened the Candy Corral Dec. 10. Although they both had been in business before, this is their first venture into the candy business.

“We want to be Verde Valley’s largest sweet spot,” Colleen said. “We make everything here in the Cottonwood store except the wrapped candies.”

Colleen explained that they are currently opening two more locations, one in Old Town Scottsdale, and another in Out of Africa. “They will be open by the end of February,” she said.

The Hattans moved to Arizona from Michigan. “We moved out here to retire,” Colleen said. “But I had always dreamed of owning a candy store.”

Two daughters, Ally and Ella Barricklow, are working in the store, along with Kasi Parish and Darcie Trembley.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Sunday hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
