Bringing together religion and science

It is not science versus religion.

Instead, it is accepting creation as a religious truth and evolution as a scientific fact.

That, in a nutshell, is what will be explored starting Sunday, Feb. 5, at Cottonwood’s Mountain View United Methodist Church.

The date marks the annual observance of the Clergy Letter Project, wherein people from science and religion gather together to discuss the relationships between these two areas.

The 13,506 clergy and more than 1,000 scientists, who have signed the letter, urge people who are serious about religion and science to talk to each other and learn from each other.

Opening the series will be the Rev. Laura O’Neil, Mountain View’s senior pastor, who will explain how science and theology relate in the postmodern world. The sessions, to which the public is invited, will from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the church’s Worship Center, 901 S 12th St.

Feb. 12 the Rev. Ed Womack – a retired United Methodist pastor and member of Mountain View UMC, will give an illustrated talk on “The Wonders of Ammonites.”

For Feb. 19 the speaker will be Howie Usher, biology teacher at Mingus Union High School, whose topic will be “The Wonders of Biology.

The Clergy Letter Project will conclude Feb. 26, when Lou Camp, with his background in physics and an interest in astronomy, will discuss “The Wonders of Astronomy and Astro/Physics.”
