Pet Corner
The Verde Valley Humane Society
The Verde Valley Humane Society "Pet of the Week" is "Misty," a little Chihuahua mix that has a heart as big as all outdoors. This little lady walks great on a leash and sits perfectly on your lap. Misty's adoption fee has been discounted by $20 thanks to our generous donors.

From time to time I write down questions that are presented to us and save them until I can get enough for the Pet Corner.

I try to address them as I get the chance and when another column isn't of pressing importance.

Please feel free to send your questions to us at VVHS, P.O. Box 1429 Cottonwood, AZ 86326 and then watch for the answers in the Verde Independent.

Q. Do you ban certain breeds from VVHS?

A. No we do not punish certain breeds because of another's deeds. Of course breeds that are known for bites and aggressiveness are very well known to us and we pay close attention to these animals. We do temperament test all breeds upon arrival and daily until they are placed up for adoption. VVHS does not adopt out aggressive animals. We also screen applicants the best we can.

Q. What is the earliest age you will adopt a kitten to me? I want a tiny one.

A. We hold kittens until they are completely weaned from their mothers and eating sufficiently on their own. Their health is also being monitored. They are normally about eight weeks old when released for adoption.

Q. You have a curtain dividing the cat area from the back area. Why can't I go back there and look around? I hear tiny kittens back there and that's what I want.

A. That is the holding area and there is no one back there up for adoption. We also hold cats in that area for five days waiting to see if their own comes. People do go back there with a kennel tech if their animal is lost. Often animals that don't need to be disturbed are back there, such as nursing mothers and animals too young to be placed up for adoption. Yes you might hear babies but they are not ready to go home with anyone.

Q. Do you have a book with all of the Pet Corner columns in it, if so where do I get one?

A. That question has come up several times recently and it is being pondered. If you have a special column that you would like, the VI has back copies of newspapers in their office.

Q. Is there going to be a Pet-A-Pallooza this year and will you be there?

A. Yes there is on Oct. 10 at the Kid's Park located at the fairgrounds. Yes we will be there along with many other shelters.

Q. Will the new VVHS Adoption Center be operable when Phase I is completed?

A. Yes when it is completed we can move the adoptable animals over to the new building and use the existing facility to hold animals the five-day waiting period before going up for adoption.

Q. I found a young male dog and he is going to be neutered. Does VVHS help financially if we can't afford the surgery or do you only help the animals at the shelter?

A. If you live in any of the jurisdictions that VVHS services we will help if you are financially challenged at this time. We will assist $50 on a female dog, $40 on a male dog, $35 on a female cat and $25 on a male cat. The entire process will only take a few minutes of your time and will help you during the hard times we are all facing right now. The shelter animals are altered with the money from the adoption fees. Our spay/neuter program is to enable citizens financially to alter their own animals.

Q. Where do you get the money for programs such as spay/neuter?

A. Through public donations and grant money.

Q. What is the budget for building Phase I?

A. It is $950,000 and I am proud to say that Noble Heritage has kept us on budget.

Q. After your sneak preview next door and the opening of your Fundraising Campaign, what is it that you need in the way of sponsorship?

A. The board members and I would like people or businesses to sponsor any of us at $1 per hole for 100 holes. Of course a donation of any size would be appreciated as we begin yet another crusade. Just make your check out to VVHS Building Fund/Profund and indicate who you would like to sponsor. We would also like more golfers.

Q. Do you and your board members golf, is that why your fundraising campaign is a golfing event?

A. Laughingly I have to say that we are not golfers in any way. Come watch us and I won't have to say another word about it. We have been told that the event should be finished by around 2 p.m. and I don't think they realize that I am just hoping that I can hit my 100 holes before dark, with a hockey stick. This campaign has generated thousands of dollars for other organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and we are hoping it will do the same for us.

Q. I have some nice furniture, would you be interested in using it in your new facility or possibly selling it at your Good Buy Shoppe?

A. Definitely we would be interested. At this time we are evaluating furniture that is coming in and have already started storing some of it. We have two "Meet the Pet" rooms that we would like to decorate as comfortably as possible. We would like the animals and the potential adopters to feel at ease in these home-like settings. We also need two conference tables and other office items. If you have anything you would like picked up, please call the Good Buy Shoppe at 634-4298 for pick-up options.

Q. What are your days and hours of operation?

A. We are open six days a week. The only days we are closed to the public is Sunday or holidays but there is still a crew here caring for the animals. We are open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Thursday and Saturday, we are open 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Last October, the economy hit VVHS hard and we cut back hours of operation. As you can see we are pleased to announce that we are now open again on Tuesday until 3 and hope to soon be able to go back to our normal hours. Another good thing is that we were able to keep our employees at least on a part-time basis through the difficult times.
