Benefit for David Keebler Sunday at Moose Lodge

Aug. 18

The Verde Valley Moose Lodge is hosting a benefit for David Keebler, a Vietnam veteran who recently had major surgery and needs help with medical bills.

The even is Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the lodge, 1051 S. Broadway, Clarkdale.

Rock with Llory McDonald, Roger Curry and Ronnie Appleman. There will be raffles, plus BBQ chicken with all the fixin's for a $10 donation. Call Lary Wascak at (928) 592-2483.

Sunday lunch at the VFW

The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 6739 in Camp Verde will be hosting dinner on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. They will be serving roast beef subs & lots of sides for a donation of $6 a plate.

Come on in & enjoy great food, good company & have some fun. Proceeds go to veterans & family support. Members & guests welcome.

Any hikers out there?

MRM Trails (Montezuma-Rimrock-McGuireville) is beginning monthly hikes this month.

The first is scheduled for Saturday, 7:30 a.m. in Lake Montezuma. The hike will either be a three-mile neighborhood loop or a three-mile trek from Forest Glen Trailhead, depending on interest and crowd.

The hike will be limited to 12 registered, waiver-signing participants. This introductory hike will provide a lot of information about what MRM Trails has been doing in the neighborhood since 2009, as well as plans for the next 10 years or so coordinating a trail system throughout Beaver Creek, which will connect into the Red Rock, Cornville and Camp Verde trail systems. Elk-viewing workshop

Aug. 17

The Arizona Game & Fish Department is hosting an Elk-Viewing Workshop on Saturday.

This is a free event at Mormon Lake Lodge, with presentations at 8 and 9 a.m., followed by field trips to view elk.

'Balance' - A Musical Awakening

'Balance' is a music and video production that details life, and the awakening of the heart and mind. 'Balance' is a scenic and harmonious ride through the use of technology creating a celebration of sight and sound. It is a powerful one man performance by one of the leading explorer in the area of contemporary Improvisational music.

Shane Wilson, a Buddhist Minister and highly trained in classical and jazz guitarist, who has continued to perform professionally for over 45 years, will perform Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Sedona Creative Life Center, 333 Schnebly Hill, Sedona. The event is free.

Coconino County Fair extends deadline

Aug. 19

The Coconino County Parks and Recreation Department extended the deadline to Aug. 19 for those submitting exhibits into the 64th Annual County Fair Aug. 30- Sept. 2 at Fort Tuthill County Park at 2446 Fort Tuthill Loop off of Interstate 17 south of Flagstaff.

Fair organizers extended the deadline to enter exhibits into the Fair for multiple categories, including Fine Arts, Hobbies and Collections, Gems and Minerals, Agriculture and Horticulture, Floriculture, Home Economics, Schools, Open Youth, Open Poultry, Open Rabbits, Open Sheep and Open Horse.

Entry forms for 4-H Livestock and 4-H Club work are not included in the deadline extension.Information on how to enter an item into the Fair for competition in various categories is contained inside the County Fair Book, which can be found at

WHVVD meeting at American Legion Post 93

At 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, American Legion Post 93 (Camp Verde) will host the first meeting to plan the 2014 Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day Celebration. The 2014 WHVVD is scheduled for March 30. Radical Islam presentation

The Verde Valley Patriots will be showing a presentation by Bridgitte Gabriel entitled 'Exposing the threat of Radical Islam'. After going through her teen years as a Christian in Islamic controlled Lebanon, hiding in a bomb shelter, she escaped to Israel. In this country she has founded 'Act For America' which points out the very real threat that Radical Islam is to our country and it must be stopped now or else 'her past will be our future'. Quail Country Quilters meet

At the Quail Country Quilters' next meeting Thursday they will be working on projects for the Boutique for our Quilt Show this fall, Oct 18 & 19. Bring sewing machines and sewing supplies or be ready to help with cutting and pressing. QCQ members remember to bring your completed quilt show entry registration forms. Archaeology Film Fest: 'Black Sands'

The Verde Valley Archaeology Center winds up its free Summer Archaeology Film Fest at 7 p.m. in the Sedona Public Library with the documentary feature "Black Sands." Thirty-five years ago there was hardly anyone who could imagine what was hidden under the sandy hills of Karakum, one of the greatest deserts in the world. Until the archaeologist Victor Sarianidi started excavating and unveiling a previously unknown civilization.

Shri Blues in Clarkdale Concert

Aug. 24

On Saturday, Clarkdale Community Services - Parks & Recreation is proud to present the Shri Blues Band. They will perform 7-9 p.m. at the Clarkdale Town Park gazebo located at 1001 Main Street, Clarkdale. This concert is free to the public.

The park is located in the center of the town's historic district on Main Street, between 10th and 11th Streets. There is a playground for the kids to enjoy while the adults listen and dance to the music. Vendors will be on site.

There is a 50/50 raffle which all proceeds benefit the Concerts in the Park.

DORR celebrates anniversary with Founders Day event

This year, the Democrats of the Red Rocks (DORR), Sedona's own grass-roots Democratic organization, celebrates its 10th anniversary.

As part of DORR's yearlong celebration, members and guests will gather to honor the visionary DORR founders with a Founders Day Brunch at Heartline Café in Sedona, Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The women who founded DORR were a dynamic force in bringing together like-minded individuals to work together to improve life in Arizona. Nine of the original DORR members will attend this event, which will feature guest speaker Felecia Rotellini, candidate for State Attorney General. The theme for the event is "Stepping Up to Serve the Community."

Join Cottonwood Board of Adjustment

The City of Cottonwood is seeking applicants to fill two vacancies on the Council-appointed five-member Board of Adjustment.

Each seat is for a three-year term, and they are volunteer, non-paid opportunities. This Board is a quasi-judicial decision-making body that hears variance requests and appeals of decisions of the Zoning Administrator. Training is available.

The Board meets on an as-needed basis on the third Wednesday of each month in the Council Chambers at 6 p.m.

Join Public Safety Personnel Board

Sept. 13

The City of Cottonwood's Public Safety Personnel Board is seeking applicants to fill a voting member term that will expire July 1, 2016. This position is voluntary and non-paid.

The purpose of the City of Cottonwood Public Safety Board is to administer the Police and Fire Departments' retirement system benefits, approve new members, handle actions on claims for retirements and disability claims, and analyze annual reports with respect to the administration of the system.

The Board/Commission application form may be obtained from the Human Resources office at 816 N. Main St., (through August at 199 S. 6th Street), OR from the City's website: Applications must be returned to the HR office no later than 3:00 PM Sept. 13, 2013.

Women's Volleyball League organizing in Camp Verde

Sept. 16

Camp Verde Parks & Recreation announces a Women's Volleyball League. This is a recreational league playing Sunday afternoons on the newly refinished court in the Community Gym on Hollamon Street. Teams will play a round robin season followed by a double elimination tournament with a trophy to the winning team. Games start Sept. 22 with sign-ups due by Sept. 16. The Great Arizona ShakeOut

The Arizona Geological Survey and Arizona Division of Emergency Management are working with county emergency management and public health departments; state, federal and local authorities; and school districts throughout the state to engage Arizonans in the ShakeOut event scheduled for 10:17 a.m.

The Arizona Broadband Seismic Network has recorded 54 earthquakes in Arizona so far in 2013; most went unfelt. The largest event, a 3.5 magnitude earthquake, occurred near Fredonia. Faults in Arizona, adjacent states and Mexico are capable of damaging earthquakes up to magnitude 7.5.

The ShakeOut drill involves practicing the "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" exercise. To participate, go to and pledge your family, school, business, or organization's participation in the drill. Once registered, you will receive information on how to plan your drill and how to engage your community.

Volunteers needed for homeless sustainability program

Currently, there are no consistent resources for individuals that find themselves in need of food on the weekends in the Cottonwood / Sedona area. The Verde Valley Homeless Coalition is in need of groups of 5-10 individuals to assist with our weekend sustainability program. Groups will meet at the Old Town Mission one Friday a month from 2:30-4:30 to prepare 50 sack lunches to be distributed to our transient neighbors on the weekend.

They are looking to find 4-5 "core groups" before they will launch the program. This is a wonderful opportunity for Youth Groups, School Groups, community service, etc. If interested, or if you have any questions, please contact Eliza Louden at Catholic Charities; (928) 634-4254, ext. 54135, or
