Camp Verde Library Friday Author Talks

July 26

Local author Mike Bove will be appearing from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Camp Verde Library's Friday Author Talk. Bove is the author of the Bruce DelReno golf mysteries. "Willowtree" is the first in the series.

Willowtree's a fictional Verde Valley town and Bruce DelReno, senior citizen sleuth, is a retired mailman and avid golfer. After his dog finds a body, Bruce becomes obsessed with finding the killer. Former teacher, and mail carrier, Mike Bove lives in Cottonwood where he works on his golf game and the second Bruce DelReno Mystery, "Stinger Maquire."

Wine Consortium meeting

July 17

All members of the Verde Valley Wine Consortium are invited to attend the VVWC quarterly meeting from 10 a.m. to noon at Rendezvous in Old Town (RIOT), 777 N. Main St., Old Town Cottonwood. Business meeting commences at 10 am, followed by Verde Valley wine tasting and treats. Vintners are invited to put a bottle up for tasting by members.

Cat's Vyktrola at Main Stage

The Cat's Vyktrola will be performing a show at The Main Stage in Cottonwood on Friday at 8:30 p.m. They are sharing the stage with the awesome band Green Light. The show is free.

A Dog's Day Out in the Park

The City of Sedona Parks and Recreation Department cordially invites all animal lovers and dog owners to support the third annual A Dog's Day Out in the Park.

This pet friendly event takes place this Saturday from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. on the multi-use field at Posse Grounds Park.

This event is free for those interested in playing with their dogs on the beautiful grass field.

There will be dog nail trimming, dog baths, dog brushing, and free dog licensing (with proof of rabies vaccination).

There will be an "off leash" fenced-in area with a kiddie pool for the dogs to play in. Parks and Recreation will be handing out free doggie bandanas to the first 50 dogs through the gate.

Vacation Bible School at Calvary Chapel

July 22-26

Children ages 4-12 are invited to attend this summer's Vacation Bible School at Calvary Chapel in Cottonwood. This year's VBS theme is "Kingdom Chronicles." VBS will be held during the evening hours, 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm, Monday, July 22 through Friday, July 26. This will be a fun and exciting time of learning the Bible, and participating in exciting activities. Parents are encouraged to attend on the final evening, Friday, July 26, in order to share in their children's achievements. Calvary Chapel is easy to find. July Diabetes Support Group

"The correlation between sleep, glucose and insulin" is the topic of the July Diabetes Support Group, sponsored by Verde Valley Medical Center's Diabetes Education Program. The free support group is 5-7 p.m., Monday in VVMC's Conference Rooms B and C, 269 S. Candy Lane. The group is open to all members of the community. Karen Russell of Recipe 4 Wellness Presents: "Eating Gluten Free the Right Way!" Karen is doing this talk again because so many people attended the last class and there is a demand for this information. There is a right way and a wrong way to eat gluten free. If you do it the wrong way, you can develop other health issues that you do not want.

Middle School Football Practice

Cottonwood Middle School Football practice begins Thursday at 5 p.m. at CMS Football Field. All interested seventh and eighth graders are welcome to join.

The Fourth Friday dance at Liberty Performing Art,s 662 E. 89A., Cottonwood, is East Coast Swing. Cost of $10 per person includes an hour-long dance lesson followed by an open dance and desserts.

Free Summer Pool Party

Camp Verde Community Library (CVCL) in collaboration with Camp Verde Parks & Recreation is hosting a Free Pool Party for Teens in grades 8-12 at the Camp Verde Town Pool on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. Bring your appetite and bring your friends for free pizza, games, music and swimming, too, of course.

The event is being planned to reach out to teens in the area who may be interested in learning about an opportunity to participate in CVCL's formation of a Teen Advisory Board (TAB).

McDonald's to host Backpack Saturday

Parents, get ready for the biggest backpack giveaway ever! The first 100 children who visit a Cottonwood or Northern Arizona McDonald's restaurant at 8 a.m., on Saturday, will receive a free backpack.

McDonald's restaurants throughout Arizona are hosting Backpack Saturday, an event that will give away a total of 28,000 backpacks and help children get ready for school. The free backpack offer excludes Wal-Mart and mall McDonald's restaurant locations.

Birthday Bash at animal center

The Adopt for Life Center for Animals (Verde Valley Humane Society) is having a Birthday Bash for all of the animals. Help celebrate on Saturday at 4 p.m. They will have tours of the facility, mingle with the Firecracker Dogs, have a puppy-naming contest and lots more! Brandi's Kitchen hosts benefit fundraiser

Aug. 1

Brandi's Kitchen is hosting a benefit fund-raiser in an effort to raise funds for the Homes for Our Troops non-profit organization. The fundraiser is a spaghetti dinner on Aug. 1 from 4-8pm at Brandi's restaurant located at 660 East Mingus Ave, Cottonwood. The meal will consist of a spaghetti dinner with or without meat, salad, garlic bread, dessert and drink; adults $10 per person and children under 8 is $7. Tickets will be sold at the door.

Homes for Our Troops recently joined with the Cottonwood community in breaking ground for constructing of a new home for U.S. Marine Sgt. Jordan Maynard, his wife, Jennifer and their son, Jay. A national non-profit organization, Homes for Our Troops, is dedicated to building specially adapted, no-cost homes for severely injured veterans. Only through generous donations and fundraisers, can the organization continue to build these much needed homes. Maynard is an Afghanistan veteran who was wounded on March 23, 2011.

According to Pam Van Winkle, President of the VFW 7400 Ladies Auxiliary and fundraiser "go to person" she praised Brandi on her generous donation for providing the major meal expense items (location, manpower and food). Other contributors are: Food City, VFW7400 Ladies Auxiliary, Verde Valley Moose Lodge 1449, American Legion Post 135 and Larry Wascek. Now Accepting Applications for Teen Advisory Board

Camp Verde Community Library (CVCL) is seeking applications from teens, grades 8-12 who would like to help create a Library Teen Advisory Board (TAB). Nine to 15 Camp Verde teens will be chosen from the pool of applicants after the Aug. 16 deadline to serve as voting TAB members. TAB members will have an incredible opportunity to make a difference in the community and library services to teens for years to come by laying a solid foundation for the future direction, vision and purpose of the CVCL TAB.

The CVCL TAB will help design the Teen space in Camp Verde's new library and help determine the selection of books, music and movies the library provides to teens. They are looking for enthusiastic teens with creative ideas, teens who can collaborate with others, teens who have something to say and want to

BCAC hosts annual Arts & Crafts Fest

The Beaver Creek Adult Center will host their annual Arts & Crafts Festival on Friday and Saturday at 4250 Zuni Way in Lake Montezuma. Friday the Festival will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vendors will have stained glass items, original art, handcrafted soaps and lotions, candles, original jewelry, cork art, silk apparel, crocheted and quilted items, Christmas items, and other gifts galore for your holiday shopping. There will also be a bake sale, and Irene will be selling her delicious hot apple fritters. At 1 p.m. on Saturday there will be a drawing for the raffle prizes donated by each of the vendors. Lavender 'walk and talk'

July 20

Bella Donna leads an herbal walk focusing on lavender on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. in Lake Montezuma. This is a thoroughly hands-on workshop of picking herbs, tasting, and learning about cooking and drying. There will be a demo of 'lavender-infused honey' and of course there will be food served, always everyone's favorite part of the day. Take-homes of herbs, teas, recipes and ideas. The lavender should be in full bloom and ready to harvest for those of you who would like to sneak away with some.

Art Fair Fund-raiser

Camp Verde Promotions will be having a fund-raiser along with the Cornfest. If you have artwork on your walls that you would like to change out, now is the time. Donate the ones you are tired of and purchase a new look at the Cornfest. Monies raised will help with expenses for the Cornfest and Fort Verde Days. Closing reception for 'Sense of Place'

White Hills Gallery hosts a closing reception of "Sense of Place," a group show focused on the visual story of geographical locations, on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. "Sense of Place" brings together artists located in Flagstaff, Clarkdale, Cottonwood, Sedona, and Camp Verde, working in a variety of interpretations and materials, from masking tape art to found object art to shadow photography.

VBS at Camp Verde Baptist

Get your tickets to Colossal Coaster World Vacation Bible School, each day from 9 a.m. to noon. Come for a week of fun and excitement at Camp Verde Baptist Church. The amusement park is open to all kids in grades 1-6.

Spend an exciting morning visiting Tune Town, the Global Expo, Scissors and Stuff and the yummy Cotton Candy Café. Learn how to face fear and trust God every day.

Kick-off registration is Saturday during Camp Verde's Cornfest. Spirit of Joy hosts Ice Cream Social

Spirit of Joy Church invites the community to their annual Ice Cream Social on Saturday, 2-4 p.m. This old-fashioned ice cream social is free and includes a fun cake walk. Spirit of Joy Holds Clothing Exchange

"Revolve," Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church's Children's Clothing Exchange, will open its doors on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Just in time for the start of school, "Revolve" is an opportunity for families with infants to teens to "exchange" new or gently used clothing, and acquire needed clothing or shoes.

"Revolve" is currently taking donations of infant to teen clothing/shoes, clean and new or gently used. Monetary donations are also accepted, so that sizes not donated may be purchased.  A grant received from Thrivent is enabling Spirit of Joy to offer this exchange. To participate, please bring the child for whom the clothing is intended on July 27.

Cadillac Angels to rock Clarkdale

On Saturday, Clarkdale Community Services/Parks & Recreation is proud to present Cadillac Angels for the Concerts in the Park series.  

They will perform 7-9 p.m. at the Clarkdale Town Park gazebo. This concert is free to the public.
