Prescott author book signing at Cottonwood Public Library

Jan. 18

Meet author Shivana Alexis at the Cottonwood Public Library from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Youth Services Program Room.

Shivana Alexis was born in Germany in the midst of WWII and grew up amidst the ruins that remained of her hometown. The town became part of Communist East Germany (GDR) when Germany was divided.

Millions of East Germans began to flee the GDR, but her mother, an outspoken anti-Communist activist, decided to remain. She was later found dead. Threatened to be placed in the care of a Communist-run orphanage, Shivana begged a compassionate neighbor, who was a member of the police force, to eventually help her make her way to freedom across the East German border.

After coming to the U.S., Shivana decided to enlist in the U.S. Army and found herself back in Germany on the Western side to work in the office of the Commanding General, U.S. Army and 7th Army at Heidelberg Headquarters.

After leaving the service, she obtained her BA in Communications and MS in Human Services and held positions as mental health case manager and probation officer in Yavapai County.

In her book, Miracles and Cloudberries, a Young East German Girl’s Courage of Survival and Escape, Shivana draws on her own memories and life experiences during a dark time in history. She tells a story and allows historical fact and fiction to intersect.
