Goodwill Donation Center to open in VOC

Jon Hutchinson
Staff Reporter

VILLAGE of OAK CREEK -- Goodwill Industries of Northern Arizona is opening a donation-only site at 64 Cortez Drive in the Village of Oak Creek. President David Hirsch notes that there are five Goodwill sales stores in Northern Arizona, including stores in Cottonwood and Sedona but also a growing number of Donation Centers.

The Village Donation Center will be open seven days a weeks, from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. beginning with a soft opening Wednesday, Jan. 25.

The 1,178-square-foot facility will accept items such as gently-used clothing, furniture, toys, books and small appliances with a convenient donor drive up for easy drop off. The opening of the center will provide two new jobs for the Sedona community and will make the fourth Goodwill donation center in Northern Arizona.

Hirsh says Goodwill does market research like a typical retail store.

“We need to know where our customers are coming from. When we look at demographics, we see that on the average, people don’t want to go more than five miles or travel 5-7 minutes to make donations,” says Hirsch.

“We also have a ’10-second rule.’ To be successful at a donation site, the drop-off and unloading and receiving the tax form, should take no more than 10-seconds. It is a matter of convenience.”

“The Cortez center is not built for a drive-through, but we will have a drive-up,” he said.

The bottom-line for Goodwill is ‘social enterprise,’ that takes in revenue and does good things in local communities. It is economic and workforce development. All revenues stay in the local communities.”

The stores across Northern Arizona employ 110 people from entry level through leadership and management, but we have also assisted another 307 people to find jobs.”

The new Donation Center will create two new jobs.

“Goodwill provides job training to prepare for the world of work, from soft skills, to applications, conducting a job search and applying for a job.”
