Karen’s Barber Shop opens in Cottonwood

Philip Wright
Staff Reporter

COTTONWOOD – “I am the only barber in the Verde Valley with kids’ cuts in a red Mustang,” said Karen Tudor. She opened Karen’s Barber Shop & Family Haircutting Dec. 1 at 703 S. Main St. in Cottonwood.

Although Karen serves the entire family with haircuts for all ages, she has taken a big step in making her shop particularly welcoming to small children. She has a sports car set up like it is sitting in an old-fashioned drive-in theater.

The sports car is built on an adjustable barber system that lets Karen lower or raise it, depending on the size of the child. The car also sits in front of a large-screen television. With the car and the TV, the kids are hardly aware that they’re there to get a haircut.

Karen explained where she got the idea for the sports car. “In school, we had to have a floor model to graduate,” she said. “This was my floor model 26 years ago.”

She said she’s always wanted a shop with a kids’ corner. The car had to be located, but Karen already had the barber-chair lift system.

“My husband made it,” she said. Karen’s husband, Tracy Tudor, is an auto-shop teacher at Camp Verde High School.

“Friendly service at a great price,” is what Karen says is special about her new shop. She also feels the location is great, and she always has “lots of candy” on hand.

Haircuts are $11 for kids and seniors and $12 for adults.

Karen said this is her first time as a shop owner, but she’s been cutting hair for 25 years.

“I think with my great cutting abilities, experience and my nice clean, friendly shop with a uniqueness all its own, I will grow quickly,” she said.

Karen believes that by giving people a great service at a great price – and by showing them that you appreciate their business – they will return.

Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Looks like a "Red Ferrari" to me. Not a mustang
