11/1/2009 7:43:00 PM Letter: Taxpayers should have say in SNAP purchases
Re: Your editorial of Oct. 23, 2009, concerning use of SNAP Program:
If cigarettes and alcohol cannot be purchased - which is not good for you - then candy bars, sodas and junk food should not be purchased. Program provides free food, paid by the taxpayers, who should be able to say what can be purchased.
About being obese. The food they buy should help prevent obesity. (Exercise also helps.) In later years - diabetes can be a high medical expense. Who is paying the medical bills? The taxpayer.
When something is given to you free, spend it wisely. Think of your health in the future. Be thankful you are able to be in the program and you can eat three meals a day.
