Letter: Romney’s comments insulting

Editor:

Soon I will start receiving social security, and complete my first year as a Medicare recipient. Little did I know that I would now be a victim, one of the 47 percent that, in Romney’s words, “are dependent upon government” and “believe that government has a responsibility to care for them.” Until I reflected on his comments, I didn’t realize that people like my mother and father-in-law who don’t pay taxes because their retirement income is too small have an entitlement-mentality. And this after a lifetime of working, scrimping, saving, and paying taxes! I had failed to realize that they were victims.

I also didn’t realize that the government grants students receive that help finance their college education made them victims of an entitlement-mentality.

I find Romney’s comments insulting, broadly-speaking and personally. After a lifetime of working, my parents enjoyed the benefit of Social Security to keep them from poverty because my father’s pension was reduced over 60 percent a few months before being forced into early retirement. This was a cut made by the job creators. If it wasn’t for Medicare, my parents would have been broke. My father-in-law’s pension is around $100 a month, a result of trying to be an entrepreneur. They don’t all get rich. He doesn’t receive a lot from Social Security, and Medicare is a godsend, but according to Romney, and to the people who concurred with him at that fund-raising event, my mother and father-in-law have an entitlement mentality.

Then there is myself. Prior to being eligible for Medicare, I paid for my healthcare insurance. The premium cost a tad over 20 percent of my income, and to afford that I had to have a ten thousand dollar deductible. On top of that, the insurance company decided to deny major medical coverage as a benign result of a routine exam. I would have gladly paid 20% more in taxes to have government sponsored healthcare just to have 100 percent coverage.

Romney is right. I was a victim. I was a victim of insurance bureaucrats who made a profit by charging high premiums while denying and restricting coverage.

There are those who say that Pres. Obama is waging class warfare, and that his policies will destroy America. To the contrary, conflict between classes is not a result of the Obama administration. The widening of the gap between the wealthiest and the rest of us was happening long before Obama became president. Many of the 47 percent that Romney spoke of are victims, but they are not victims of the government. They are victims of the job creators who haven’t created jobs. They are victims of wealth trickling up instead of down. No, not trickled up but poured up.

While I find Romney’s comments insulting, what seems worse to me is that there are plenty of people who agree with him.

Emmy-Jay, you’ve turned into a parody of the character in Poe’s “Tell-Tale Heart.” The only person obsessing here is -- unfortunately -- you. The only voices you hear are inside your head.

When Obama is re-elected, seek professional counseling immediately. Not that I give a rat’s rectum what happens to you (compassion fatigue, I guess), but I don’t want to read about more innocent people getting hurt.

You describe what you see when you look in your own mirror. Pity you can’t recognize yourself. Too frightening, I suppose. This Halloween, forget the costume.

Just go as yourself.

MJ? You are bordering on mental illness diagnoses. You must stop your ignorant rants. I have read your comments for months now and you are becoming increasingly delusional and deranged. Please share with all of us reading what you intend to do with yourself when President Obama is re elected, when republicans are removed from all positions nation wide? What will you do MJ?

So mr. Rmoney calls Americans that have paid into a system, did not receive tons of money from mommy and daddy and actually worked their entire lifes "victims" "guilty" "entitled". A spin so insulting and disgusting to Americans. He wants Americans to feel guilty for receiving their rightful Social Security, Unemployment, Food Stamps etc., something ALL workers pay into. I have never witnessed a candidate for President of the USA so out of touch. This man has flip flopped on every issue, he is on national TV and record flipping on issues daily. but yet seems to think Americans have not heard him. Wow? just Wow. Cant wait till Nov. 6 and this clown is off the airwaves. I will not cast one vote for a republican at city county state or federal level. I am Independent Social Conservative and will vote straight Democrat.

Emmy-Jay, I just love your side-splitting humor. Haven’t enjoyed myself so much in days. Guffaws, chortles and smirks galore! Was just telling friends that you’re the Cliff Clavin of comedy. (You wouldn’t happen to be a retired mail carrier, with way too much time on his hands, would you?) You’re funniest when you’re pretending to be serious.

Wait…that’s not an act? Oh, my.

Your comeback is getting a little slack, though. Have you considered improv boot camp? Iron supplements? Cialis? Maybe, skimming an occasional newspaper or a book (those things you use to prop up your game console). I’d be happy to help you with the difficult words. One suggestion…moving your lips while you read is poor manners.

Your thigh-slapping play on words -- “obammiecare,” and “maryjewana” -- should make you a genuine hit at the next skinhead kegger! Keep ‘em comin’, Emmy-Jay!

As a goodwill ambassador, you make everybody feel like a genius!

"OK folks," whispered the radio announcer on the government funded and approved station.
"I'm going to play a special recording of "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen, by the "Woe Is Us Singers" starring Lee Cali as lead female vocalist.
What makes this version so special is the chorus is by sung by their special friends, the "Crooning Comrades":
Mary Jane, Phil Falbo, G. lemaster, and of course the incomparable Ryan Jensen, with an extra special guest appearance, John B, on Kazoo.
Lets listen to this special recording from September 2012."

Article comment by: moral people until someone threatens a sliver of their cheese

So many just clueless about what's in store for them and theirs if they get a serious illness even if they have "decent" medical coverage through their employer. There are sink or swim reasons why some in Washington attempt to change the American paradigm in healthcare and if we don't balance the ethics and economics of how healthcare is presently delivered (or not) we will have an even greater burden upon the next retirees and the next generation. The hands-off Republicans will not always be healthy even the affluent ones, and many Republicans who believe employer insurance is "good enough" are in for a big fat surprise that more than a few have discovered. Think you can't lose your home and savings? If your medical bills are onerous enough and your only alternative is Medicaid - you'll find out how screwed-up our American healthcare system really is and why some are driven by morality to tangle with the special interest organizations determined to impede their efforts.

it won't matter who we elect to office if we don't address the problems that are keeping us from prospering as a country.we have a bunch of nuts in washington that can't agree on the time of day. we need to get the dead beats out of there. we need to start by making all elected positions in washington volunteer only. "no payed positions ) You might think i've gone crazy, but i feel that it would be an honor to represent our country. we need to have our state representatives located at our state capital, not in washington. thiswill make it harder for special interest groups and lobbyists to influence them . back 200 years ago having all state representatives in one location made sense, but we now have the technology to telecommute so there is no need to send them to washington. they would also be able to be home for dinner with their families . we need to go to a one party system that puts the american public first , not their political agendas. ( and if not a one party system, maybe a system that looks out for the best interest of our american citizens instead of everyone else for the sake of votes. we need to get rid of the mind set that we have democrats to spend money on entitlements and republicans to save money and cut entitlements. what we need is to come together for the best interest of the general public. if we continue on the path that we are in , we won't have to worry about our entitlements in the very near future. i'm not an economist but i do know if i spend 33% more than i make , i'm gonna be in trouble fast. especially if i'm 15 trillion in debt. ( that equates to our total countries income for 6 years . ) we pay more in interest than we spend on education. i could go on forever, but i better get to work. good luck america with john baener cantor reid and pelosi running our country. ( into the ground ) oh , one last thing. the amount of money that these nuts spend lying to you and making their opponent look bad to be re-elected is criminal.

I am impressed, Mr. Bond. You've managed to transcend parody and enter the realm of pure irony. Seriously, you should send that to Paul Ryan. If he can see the humor and the point, maybe we've underestimated his ability to save Mr. Stack's Social Security for as long as he may live. If not, Mr. Stack may be in real trouble. (Remember, if Romney loses, Ryan goes back to the Budget Committee, and Obama couldn't even rein-in Nancy Pelosi.)

But one itsy bitsy nitpick: I thought we were against fascist corporations relying upon all of those federal, state, county and municipal tax credits from the government. Does artistic licence cover flip-flops?

Great letter Mr. Stack and comment by "and the beat goes on." I too am in the same situation no health ins. had to buy it somewhere, chose a $1000 deductible and now can't afford the premiums! I will hope and pray Obama remains in office so I can get some affordable ins. Sure don't want the last resort to an early grave!
