Letter: Actions of fire district amount to professional abuse

There's one less pit bull at the Sedona Humane Society. His name is Hazime and he's been adopted by the Verde Valley Fire District. How proud the VVFD Board must be of their $104,000 puppet. Hazime hasn't been with Verde Valley Fire District long enough to know all he claims to know, confirming for me that he's just the hired mouthpiece fulfilling the Fire Board's goal to halt the Verde Santa Fe Annexation efforts at any cost.

Through church I'm acquainted with a couple VVFD employees, so I asked how they felt about all the aggressive, adversarial headlines being generated by their new Chief. Both individuals said they found the publicity embarrassing and were frustrated at the Fire Board criticizing firefighters because they weren't going door to door and/or donating to the anti-annexation efforts. "We have friends on the Cottonwood Fire and it's hard to be part of a group that's bullying your friends. But we know Hazime is just doing what he was hired to do so we're hoping Cottonwood Fire guys aren't taking it personally." Not taking it personally? Is there any other way to take such professional abuse?

Article comment by: Don't kill the commraderie of our local firefighters!

Hazime fits right in with the rest of VVFDís so-called ethics. What about a member of the Verde Valley Fire Districtís board, Gerald Shanks, ensuring his wife gets paid $90,000 a year as a public information officer? Itís a doggoned conflict of interest, having relatives of employees serving on these district boards. This is the result. The state should outlaw it. It eats into the wallets of John Q. Taxpayer. What Hazime is doing is going to kill the camaraderie of the firemen and emergency medical personnel who work together on the streets and in peopleís homes. Who really loses, then? The person who needs fire service or emergency services. Itís a sin what Hazime is doing, but then, as itís been pointed out, heís dancing to the tune of the board who hired him specifically to do what heís doing. Heís simply a well-pad puppet. He has no history of the good work that the departments have done together for the people of the upper Verde Valley. Check out the minutes of the VVFD board at http://www.verdevalleyfire.org/custom-1/BoardMinutesOctober25,2011.pdf. Itís hard to believe that board member Dick Dobbins expects the firemen to go door-to-door in the Verde Santa Fe annexation process, trying to convince homeowners not to annex. That is inexcusable behavior for any fire board member. Shame!

I have met Chief Hazime a number of times and I find him to be intelligent man who may turn out to be a good Chief for VVFD. But, that does not mean he is not trying to derail the VSF annexation. His board has made it quit clear that they want to defeat annexation and I am sure they have told the Chief that he need to work towards that goal. The original letter writer is correct that the VVFD Board is pushing not only the Chief but their firefighters to do everything they can to defeat annexations.

Article comment by: Is this guy serious?!!!

This guy must be joking. This letter is so obviously flawed and biased I'm surprised it was printed. Hazime is a good man and a great chief. His letters have been very articulate and civil, unlike the above rant. I'd be curious to get a direct quote from the firefighters mentioned, I have a feeling they aren't as excited for the annexation as the author lets on. If your only going to write inflammatory, unsubstanciated rhetoric than maybe you shouldn't write anything at all.

I doubt the writer of this ad hominem attack on mr Hazime has ever met the man.

Mr Hazime is a wonderful intelligent man and a fabulous fire chief.

Sedona sorely misses his aptitude and skill as leader of our fire district.

It is a shame that people feel the need to resort to name calling and temper tantrums like the writer of this piece(O S) however, it is also enlightening to those of us who side with reason not emotion.
