Commentary: Verde Valley Humane Society: A good investment in our community
Outside my window the leaves are changing. The temperatures are falling and I can see my elder foster dog, Bella, contentedly sprawled out in a patch of sunshine in the yard. The Holidays are approaching along with thoughts of giving and sharing. As you consider donating to a worthy cause this season, please keep the Verde Valley Humane Society (VVHS) uppermost in your mind.

Editorial: Recall movement against Douglas mighty quick on the draw
If Facebook was the vehicle by which we elected our leaders, Diane Douglas probably would not be waiting to take office as Arizona's new superintendent of public instruction.

Letters: Adopt-a-Highway groups need more help
Editor:

What would we look like without our ADOT Adopt-A-Highway groups?

We of the Verde Valley Toys for Tots Committee would like to thank all of the generous donors to our golf tournament on Oct. 11.

Letters: We need cooperation, not divisiveness with Cottonwood
Editor:

As a resident of the Verde Villages I wonder what the purpose of the editorial about the disparity between water rates in Cottonwood boundaries and outside Cottonwood boundaries.

Editorial: City's water rate hearings in like a lion, out like a lamb
The series of hearings on increasing Cottonwood's rate structure for water and sewer was much like the month of March.

It came in like a lion, but went out like a lamb.

Letters: Now, on to Buildings, Efficiency, Safety, Technology
Editor:

The administration and governing board of Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District wish to extend deepest thanks and gratitude, once again, for the community's overwhelming support of education, by voting "YES" on the COCSD BEST (Buildings, Efficiency, Safety, Technology) Bond Initiative brought forth in the November 4th election.

Letters: Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me
Editor:

"You can fool all of the people some of the time, you can fool some of the people all of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time."

-- Abraham Lincoln

Editorial: Exploration has always paid off for mankind
When some people want to discover where we as a human species came from, they dig in the earth - or, more appropriately, the Earth. To answer the same question, others look outward into the galaxy and far beyond.

Commentary: It's time to give workers a raise
American workers need a raise, and there's one simple way to boost incomes at the lower end of the pay scale: Increase the federal minimum wage, which has been stuck at $7.25 an hour since 2009.

Letters: Where is the justice in this case
Editor:

I was upset by the non-sentence for Joseph Lee Kennedy. Two counts of animal cruelty, drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest and he gets to just go home to mommie's house. Is she really going to be with him 24-7? What 28-year-old male actually listens to his parents anymore?

Commentary: Voters continue to polarize themselves by media habits
USA Today's Rem Rieder covered a new study by the Pew Research Center concerning the way Americans get their news about government and politics ("Too many want 'facts' tinged red or blue," 10/26/14). Pew's findings aren't a shocker - that most people tend to watch news outlets tending toward their own politics.

Letters: Good for you, Verde Valley!
Editor:

Manzanita Outreach/Kids Against Hunger would again like to extend heartfelt thanks to all who were involved in our monster packing event at Verde Valley Fairgrounds on October 11th. In one day we were able to successfully package 250,000 meals with the help of over 700 volunteers - truly a collaborative community effort! Blessings to all who were involved.

Commentary: Veterans Day 2014
Tuesday is a day for every citizen to remember and honor the sacrifice of our nation's veterans. It's important to celebrate the service of all of our veterans: those who fought during time of war and those who fought to maintain the peace.

Editorial: Rejection of Mingus override gives school districts much to think about
It was one up and one down for Upper Verde school districts in Tuesday's election.

Cottonwood-Oak Creek received voter approval on its $15 million bond while voters rejected Mingus Union's request for a budget override.

Letters: The problem with calls for gun control
Editor:

I feel compelled respond to the letter from Bill Bassett of Rimrock calling for gun laws with teeth.

Letters: Accolades for Mingus students most deserving
Editor:

I am in full agreement with your Nov. 5 editorial about Mingus' Production of "Much Ado about Nothing."

We took our 16-year-old son last Sunday and enjoyed the splendid acting, set, dancing and music. The students did an absolutely amazing job on a very challenging play.

Letters: Take Ice Bucket Challenge for our nation's veterans
Editor:

The press did an excellent job of reporting about last summer's ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, the wildly viral campaign during which millions of people doused themselves with buckets of ice water to raise awareness of ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease.

Editorial: Mingus students take spotlight as best in Northern Arizona, and entire state
It's not just the playing fields where winners are defined at Mingus Union High School.

Twice in the past week, Mingus students were honored as being among the very finest in Arizona in arenas outside the athletic field.

Letters: Selfless act will positively impact a young student's life
Editor:

My name is Tess Heydorn and I work for Cottonwood Elementary School as a 4th grade teacher. Students in 4th grade are learning all about Arizona, from the history to our breathtaking natural monuments.

Editorial: Enough is enough; Hickey's 'surreptitious viewing' plays like broken record
Someone like Clarkdale's James D. Hickey must be the worst nightmare for a prosecutor.

He's like that Energizer bunny that keeps going and going and going.

Commentary: GOP control of Senate a sure recipe for gridlock for Obama
If Republicans gain control of the Senate, what will that mean for the last two years of the Obama administration?

As young people often say about their relationships on Facebook: It's complicated.

Editorial: RTCA will test leadership, economic theory
"The principal of partnership" is the foundation of the Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance program, with grants that have been awarded for Cornville, Beaver Creek, Clarkdale and now Camp Verde.

Letters: 'Just the facts ma'am!'
Editor:

A couple of weeks after our dog passed away on Aug 19, we went to the Verde Valley Humane Society. We spoke to a gentleman who said he was the "acting manager". He showed us a couple puppies and as we were leaving, we left our name, telephone number and the type of dog we wanted to adopt.

Letters: Celebrate Our Small Businesses Owned by Women
Editor:

We live in an amazing place, surrounded by amazing scenery.

Despite this lovely place, we should remember that it's our people that make Sedona and the Verde Valley a truly spectacular place to live.

Editorial: A nod for Harrington keeps another Verde Valley voice on Yavapai College board
Yavapai College has seen a lot of drama in the past few months as dissent blossomed in the Verde Valley. Some sensed inequity in how taxpayer money was spent and called for a fix. Others called for full-blown secession.

Letter: Gun laws need real teeth
1. There must be really good, thorough background checks any time and every time a firearm changes hands. Either as a private sale or through a licensed dealer or gun show vender or even as a gift. Technology is ready for this measure, the general population is ready for this. The only obstruction is the NRA and other groups that hold the political future of cowardly public servants in their fists.

Letter: Political ploy or peculiar obsession?
As Election Day for Yavapai Community College Governing Board candidates nears, critical eyebrows are being raised in some quarters about the actions of the Community College. Critics ask: "Is the College using the feeble results of a summer survey to disguise a political campaign designed to return College Administrator favorites, Herald Harrington and Dale Fitzner, to the Governing Board? If that is not the College's purpose, does its behavior in the last two months suggest it has become peculiarly obsessed with the survey?

Commentary: Welcome changes at Yavapai College must be followed by action
How green is our valley?

After our wonderful monsoon it was quite green but if we are speaking of economic well being that is a far different story. One way to gauge this wellness is the percentage of students in each school district that qualify for the federal "reduce and free lunch program." Each family's income must be at or below poverty level.

Letters: Thank you for helping Hal
Editor:

After a 2 ½ month valiant fight to survive a tragic automobile accident, Harold Leslie Huey passed away. The horrible accident occurred on Monday, July 21, along Beaver Creek Road.
