Editorial: New logo design has something for everyone
As Cottonwood unveils yet another attempt at adopting a new city logo, criticism of the effort, and the final product, come with the territory.

Editorial: Whole lot of shakin' just the cost of living in Jerome
Earlier this year we had a sinkhole close down traffic for several days on Arizona 89A between Sedona and Flagstaff.

Letter: Proof is in video pudding; excellent job by police
I cannot more highly praise the officers of Cottonwood for their restraint in dealing with the Gaver family.

Letter: Scientific proof liberals happier, most stable than conservatives
So the next time you hear about a "study" that indicates conservatives are a happier group than liberals, offer a knowing smile and slowly nod your head.

Editorial: Video should quiet the conspiracy theorists
There are always going to be those conspiracy theorists who claim any police action where shots are fired that the officers were in the wrong.

Commentary: To work is human, to volunteer is divine
Today is the first day of National Volunteer Week. Should you go to Fort Verde State Historical Park during the annual History of the Soldier weekend April 11-12, thank a volunteer.

Letters: Seven roundabouts will make 260 a daily driving nightmare
Editor:

This is in reply to the two letters sent in on April 3rd & April 8th. I agree with Mr. Thorson from April 3rd. We do not need ANY roundabouts...Period.

Editorial: Local awards prove Verde Valley the finest community in Arizona
It was pure coincidence that the Cottonwood Police Department scheduled its ceremony to honor the local heroes who stepped up to assist officers involved in the March 21 Walmart parking lot brawl just one day before the community also honored its Verde Valley Community Champions.

Letters: We need simple common sense on 260 improvements
Editor:

I have watched ADOT during the construction of Highway 179 to Sedona, Hwy 260 Bypass around Camp Verde, the initial part of the Hwy 260 widening project and the I-17 widening project and cannot for the sake of me figure out what they were doing or thinking.

Commentary: Panhandling is protected free speech; aggressive panhandling is not
Cottonwood City Hall has received several calls from citizens complaining about the number of panhandlers around the city, particularly around local shopping areas. The Verde Independent conducted a survey about whether people felt there was too much panhandling in Cottonwood and 91 percent of the respondents agreed there was too much panhandling.

Letters: Roundabouts certainly better than what we now have on 260
Editor:

I see by the online poll in the Verde Independent that 80 percent responding do not like the idea of the seven roundabouts on Hwy.

Letters: Alternatives? Which alternatives?
Editor:

Re: Bill Helm's op-ed about trickle-down idealism, he talks about the conservative view of letting trickle-down economics fund our town. I, too, would like to know from where this magical money comes. Does our city council buy lottery tickets? Do we have a secret billionaire benefactor?

I don't call that conservative. I call that dreaming.

Commentary: The trickle-down effect of idealism
I'll never forget the day when my father realized that my political opinions did not mirror his.

"You know, son," he said. "You're an idealist!"

Letters: Where does your dollar go?
Editor:

In a free-market economy the dollar you spend had to be earned by someone; no matter how it came into your possession.

Letters: Time to restore land use privileges
Editor:

It's time to restore our rights as citizens to use the land as we have been doing for centuries. No more lame safety excuses, (branches that could fall on someone or flood possibilities) etc.

Editorial: It's not the date, but the message, that makes Easter so important
Easter is the most revered day in Christianity. It is the observance of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Letters: Why so many roundabouts?
Editor:

ADOT may have its circular mind made up, but it's still puzzling to me why seven roundabouts are needed between Camp Verde and Cottonwood. This section of roadway is more akin to 89A between Cottonwood and Sedona. That roadway uses logical access points that are excellently laid out and easy to navigate.

Letters: The real meaning of Easter
Editor:

This week, 2015 years ago, God reversed history - man gave Him sacrifices up until then. He provided the greatest sacrifice - His son, the Lamb of God.

We tortured and killed him, a lifeless human body was left with a spear-sized hole in it. No breath or blood left in it on a cross.

Editorial: Law designed to protect officers had unintended consequences
The proposed law that would have required police departments to withhold the names of officers involved in shootings was a classic case of what being good for the goose was definitely not good for the gander.

Letters: Great meals, great relationships thanks to VVMC
Editor:

The month of April is Autism Awareness month. Each day more and more people are being diagnosed with Autism. In the Verde Valley, we are fortunate to have one of the best facilities in the world for adults with Autism.

Letters: Thank you for making car show such a success
Editor:

The Clarkdale-Jerome Lions Club extends a big thank you to the following donors of auction and raffle items for our 5th annual Car Show:

Commentary: Following tax dollars in Arizona is getting easier
In today's digital world we track packages online, manage our bank accounts and bills from our cellphones, easily compare property values in our neighborhoods, and regularly pull up satellite images of any address we might want to reach. Regarded at first as mere conveniences, these tools are now seen by many as everyday necessities as they help us steer through our busy lives.

Letters: Thank you Cottonwood PD for always being there for us
Editor:

Regarding the big fight at Wal-Mart Saturday 3/21, Kudos to the Cottonwood Police for doing a great job!

Letters: Arizona magnificent to California 5th grader
Editor:

Hello. My name is Victor. I am a fifth-grader at Napa Valley Language Academy in Napa, California. The reason I am writing to you is that my class is doing state reports and I have chosen your magnificent state - Arizona.

Letters: Republican budget 'detrimental' to Arizonans
Editor:

The more we learn about the Republican budget that passed in the dark of night with no public review and without a transparent democratic process, the more clearly we can see how detrimental it is for the people of Arizona.

Editorial: Governor's Arts Awards proves nice guys can finish first
It's often said that nice guys finish last, but this week one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet was honored as one of Arizona's best.

Our own William Eaton won the 2015 Governor's Arts Awards in the artist category.

Letters: Urge lawmakers to keep Common Core in place
Editor:

Next week the Arizona Senate will be voting on House Bill 2190 to repeal the Common Core Standards adopted by the Legislature in 2010 for use in Math and English language Arts in public schools in Arizona.

Passage of this bill will be a huge step backwards for Public Education in Arizona.

Letters: Science Magazine says liberals happier than conservatives
Editor:

I read an interesting article in Science Magazine that stated, contrary to some views, that liberals are happier than conservatives. Previous studies indicating conservatives are happier reflect an impulse for this group to "self-enhance," or to see themselves in an unrealistically positive light.

Thursday, March 26, 2015

Editorial: No routine calls in police work
For several years now the online chat world has been highly critical of the Cottonwood Police Department.

These largely anonymous critics have targeted Cottonwood PD for being too heavily armed, too overly preoccupied with their militaristic arsenal of equipment and too eager to put their weaponry on public display.

Letters: Calling on Band of Brothers to return the salute
Editor:

It has been 48 years since I left Long Khan province in Vietnam in August of 1967. There are times when it seems like it was just yesterday, and other times when I can't comprehend where time has gone. The bad dreams have slowly faded and the bitterness has gradually turned to pride.
