Commentary: Envisioning water supply sustainability
In the midst of a 15-year drought and counting, most Arizonans recognize that the state faces water shortages. In specific localities these shortages exist now. For most of the populous portions of the state severe shortages are not projected to occur for several decades.

Letters: Typical liberal ability to distort data to their benefit
As usual, Mr. LaMaster, in his response to Mr. Barber's letter has shown the liberal ability to distort data to their benefit.

Letters: Unequaled in self-delusion; we still have a 'lawless' president
Gary LaMaster surely needs a new TV. His current one seems to be stuck on MSNBC. In his response to my letter, LaMaster compares the number of executive orders by Obama to other presidents.

Letters: Clarkdale appreciation for successful 2014 NNO
Editor:

The Clarkdale Police Department would like to thank the following sponsors for their generous contributions. Their altruism ensured our best National Night Out event to date. Their benevolence is to be commended and greatly appreciated.

Editorial: Arizona still sluggish in economic innovation
If you visit many places outside of Arizona you will probably see something you don't see much of in the Grand Canyon State - new construction.

Though some towns are coming back faster than others, the recession continues to linger in Arizona as evidenced by flat unemployment numbers and too many static economic indicators.

Letters: Who is right is best satisfied by what is right
In 1977, residents of the Town of Jerome, as stated in the original Zoning Ordinance No. 177 "found it necessary for the welfare of the Town of Jerome that a Zoning Ordinance shall be enacted" The Ordinance as revised in 1997 covered "imposing regulations, prohibitions, and restrictions" that very specifically describe uses of "land for trade, industrial, commercial and residential or other purposes".

Letters: Statistics are only as reliable as the statistician
It looked like a call to arms; that is Gary LaMaster's letter to the editor Aug. 15. It is full of the usual drivel about how great everything is going under the Obama Administration and how much better off we are, than when he took office ... according to somebody's "statistics."

I would like to thank Derek Evans, new sports reporter, for the outstanding job he has done in his short time with Verde Valley Newspapers.

Editorial: Drug-free zones start at home
What happens on a school campus is frequently a reflection of what is going on at home. Which is why campus calls to the cops are inevitable.

Rowdy behavior, assaults, petty theft, fake 911 calls and vandalism are typical infractions that will bring badges to the door.

Letters: Whose failures?
In his letter of Aug. 13, Jim Barber describes what he considers the failures of President Obama. The problem is that, once again, Barber's ideology seems to get in the way of the facts.

Editorial: Water, sewer rate hike a question of sooner or later
Nobody wants to pay more for anything whether it's gasoline, groceries or water.

But we always do, sooner or later.

Letters: No action in bicycle death is not justice
Editor:

Far too often, when a bicyclist is killed by a motorist, the bicyclist is blamed. Even when the driver of the vehicle is the responsible party, the driver will frequently get off with a "slap on the wrist."

Letters: Fanning is the police chief Cottonwood needs
We have the Right Police Chief.

Jody Fanning spent his weekend grooming the softball fields for a local Softball Tournament this past weekend. His daughter, Tessa, helped, (two weeks after knee surgery), skipping along on one good leg and the other one in a full leg brace.

The City of Cottonwood is proposing an increase in water rates and related services. How can they justify that increase after just imposing a rate increase earlier this year?

Editorial: Where are all the experts when it's time to run for school board?
When a former school board member in Flagstaff announced he would not seek another term in the upcoming election, he explained his decision by saying, "I want to have friends again."

Commentary: A life of constant fear
Karina Velasco paid her way through college by cleaning office buildings in downtown Washington for five hours every evening. She did her schoolwork after getting home at midnight, and is on track to receive her degree in social work next spring.

Editorial: Test scores show Arizona schools do more with less
Locally and across Arizona, public school teachers and administrators have much of which to be proud.

Given the ever-declining nature of state funding for public schools in Arizona, it would not come as a surprise if standardized test results left much to be desired and the money blame-game was played to the hilt.

Letters: I'll take Clarkdale's political style any day
In it's 7/11 "Political apathy certainly not a problem in Jerome" editorial, the Verde Independent seems to be trying to compare kiwis, oranges, and grapes. From a newcomer's point of view, the towns in the Verde Valley all have their own, very distinctive styles.

Letters: Mark my words: property taxes await you
The amount of debt your mayor and Cottonwood city council officials have encumbered the residents of Cottonwood with could eventually lead to default on millions of dollars in bonds. Mark my words: property taxes await you. In the meantime, enjoy the hayride with your hero mayor.

Editorial: Crandell leaves a mixed-bag legacy fitting for Arizona
Chester Crandell was an Arizona old-timer but he was a relative newcomer to state politics. From the Verde Valley perspective, he was still in a getting-to-know-you phase when he died unexpectedly Aug. 4.

Letter: Time for a change at Yavapai College
Regarding the commentary about Verde Valley being underserved by Yavapai Community College.

Letter: Post-secondary education is a regional issue
During a recent meeting, a sitting Verde Valley mayor indicated to the rest of that municipality's governing council that they should only consider the benefits that Yavapai College brings to their town in deciding whether or not to adopt his proposed resolution regarding improved communications.

Letter: Different set of rules for Yavapai County?
We have recently become aware that Yavapai County Board of Supervisors held a work session in regard to a public vehicle access to the Verde River for the purpose of public kayaking and canoeing on the river. We understand that this property is owned by Yavapai

Letter: Arizona needs mineral supplies to grow solar capacity
As Matthew Seeman's article, "Opening lands to renewable energy could make state a 'solar capital'," points out, Rep. Paul Gosar's bill to promote the development of renewable energy on public lands could greatly benefit Arizona's local and state governments.

Letter: The defense rests
Terrorism is usually committed by shadowy, anonymous thugs or their willing dupes. The 1972 bombing of a Pan Am 747, a 1973 attack on a Pan Am 707, we had to imagine those hateful faces.

Old Town Cottonwood very well could be the poster child for what downtown revitalization is supposed to represent in the United States.

Letter: We serve the residents of Verde Village with respect, courtesy and friendliness
This letter is in response to M. Lloyd's letter of July 22, 2014. The Board of Directors and the Architectural Control Committee of the Verde Village Property Owner's Association (VVPOA) feel we must respond to Ms. Lloyd's vicious attack on our procedures, actions, and our permitting process.

Editorial: County Attorney needs to make decision in bicycle fatality case
It's often said that the wheels of justice move slowly, but with certain cases in Yavapai County one can't help but question if they move at all.

Specifically, the vehicle-bicycle crash that claimed the life of 48-year-old Gilbert cyclist Lynn Hartline has been in legal limbo since the May 17 tragedy.
