Commentary: Another example of failure to enforce border security policies
Jan Brewer
Jan Brewer
By Gov. Janice K. Brewer
My Turn

Dear Mr. President:

I write regarding media reports that the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is transporting hundreds, and potentially thousands, of illegal aliens from the south Texas border and releasing them at bus stations in Tucson and Phoenix.

As Governor of Arizona, I am deeply concerned about this troubling policy and the adverse impact on the illegal aliens, as well as to Arizona. It is especially disconcerting that DHS instituted this operation without any notification to my office, the Arizona Department of Public Safety or the Arizona Department of Homeland Security. We instead learned of this action from the news media.

Our nation and the State of Arizona face significant challenges stemming from your administration's refusal to carry out its responsibility to secure our country's southern border. State and local governments, law enforcement agencies, health care providers and nonprofit organizations are all stretched to the breaking point attempting to manage the enormity of these challenges. By systematically transporting and releasing more illegal aliens into Arizona, your administration will exacerbate this problem.

This unwarranted operation is another disturbing example of a deliberate failure to enforce border security policies and repair a broken immigration system. Media reports indicate that many of the illegal aliens that DHS is releasing into Arizona from Texas are women, children, and unaccompanied juveniles. The reports also indicate that DHS has abandoned these individuals at the bus stations without any food, water or basic necessities. I remind you that the daytime temperatures in Arizona during this time of year are regularly more than 100 degrees. Consequently, this federal operation seems to place expediency over basic humanitarian concerns. The federal government should not shirk its lawful responsibility to care for and properly process these individuals.

So that the citizens of our country may fully understand the scope and goal of this operation, I ask that your administration provide answers to me regarding the following questions:

1. Who authorized this policy, and why has the federal government selected Arizona as the target?

2. When was the policy initiated, and how much longer is the operation expected to proceed?

3. How many aliens have been transported from other states to Arizona and released through this operation?

4. How many aliens have designated Arizona as their ultimate destination?

5. How many aliens are designated as a "family unit," and how many have been designated as "unaccompanied juveniles?"

6. What does the federal government know about the backgrounds and histories of the aliens being transported and released in Arizona?

7. What proactive steps is DRS or any other federal agency undertaking to establish emergency housing/detention space to properly process those aliens?

8. What has caused this massive influx of illegal aliens such that federal operations in Texas are unable to handle the processing of these individuals?

9. What is being done to secure the border in Texas to prevent the continued illegal crossings that have "forced" the federal government to transport illegal aliens from Texas and release them in Arizona?

In closing, I urge you to end this dangerous and unconscionable policy immediately, and instead take actions to fulfill the federal government's fundamental responsibility of protecting our homeland by securing our nation's borders.

You accuse liberals of: "Using human beings as political tools..." and call it
"... reprehensible."

You say, "... liberalism has never known any shame."

Mirror, mirror on the wall...

I suggest you talk with your CONSERVATIVE idols-- Jan, Joe and the other 70 or so Arizona republican/libertarian mis-representatives, about Arizona's despicable CPS situation that they created.

Alan, they bragged about the tax cuts that ultimately resulted in the CPS situation.

Then, I'd like to hear you rant about their dereliction of duty using thousands of Arizona children as 'political tools.".

It is Brewer, Horne, Arpaio et al who have no shame and operate in"the end justifies the means" realm.

Sadly, when you say, "... there is never an end, by design," you perfectly describe Arizona politics and politicians.

This newly trumped up Brewer-hates-the-Feds Border crapola is just another shiny object meant to deflect dullard's attention from the poor job performances by our elected state officials.

Jan might as well stick her jagged finger in her nose-- she'll get a better return from the Feds on time invested-- and she might accomplish more, anyway.

Man, you buy their sales-pitch hook, line and sinker.

Their plan works.

Why not just continue the bus ride to California? It is much more able to absorb the Illegals. Dumping them off the hot bus station in Phoenix is putting the Administration's finger in the Governor's eye. Is that fair?

I don't like to do the C&P but found this interesting about thee "latest" scandal. Entire article may be found at msnnews..

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security started flying immigrants in the country illegally to Arizona from the Rio Grande Valley in Texas last month after the number of immigrants including more than 48,000 children traveling on their own overwhelmed the Border Patrol there.

Immigrant families were flown from Texas, released in Arizona, and told to report to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office near where they were traveling within 15 days. ICE has said the immigrants were mostly families from Central America fleeing extreme poverty and violence.

The Homeland Security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because there was no authorization to discuss the matter publicly, said the holding center opened for unaccompanied migrant children because the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services had nowhere to turn.

One wonders where all these unaccompanied children came from. They didn't walk to Texas from Central America. Could this be diversion to tie up ICE and leave the border unprotected? One also wonder who actually made the decision to bus them to AZ. And leave them at a bus station. I really doubt that it was done by Obama. Just wondering .

Defending the nanny state? No...

Clearly, in shipping women and children to Arizona and dropping them off where unsavory characters often hang, our nanny has gone psycho.

Yes, put fencing in, play areas, house visits, background checks, fingerprinted, take classes, get special insurance, etc. etc.

All that for a teacher who already has a fingerprint card and has lived in the same place for 20 years, with children all around.

Yeah, I look like real human trafficing material.

Now you all DEFEND the nanny state? LOL

"...gotta jump through THOUSANDS of hoops?"

Initially, DHS dropped off the immigrants without prior notice. Now, a spokesperson says, Greyhound is getting "several hours" warning.

It seems that some aid groups are also getting the word. Azcentral reports that immigrants are being met by people with food and clothing. And "for migrants who can't catch a bus until the next day, volunteers are taking them home for the night."

There are almost certainly scumbags in Phoenix who trade in human cargo. Let's hope the volunteers are all legit, and that those taken "home" are returned the next day.

Just drive down to Phoenix and get in line with the rest of the humanitarians. But please, Ms. Gurl, while you're there, try to make sure there aren't any human traffickers looking to pick up some totally defenseless aliens for non-humanitarian purposes.

This is just sad, and cruel.
Dropping illegal entrants at a bus station is not humane, and it really makes me wonder who these federal agents are. Who in their right minds could be part of such a thing?

And for all these bleeding heart liberals on here that just want to bash conservatives - I didn't see ANY of you in the photo's lined up ready to take these illegals home with you.

You whine about your humanity but never actually do anything - except elect a total fool for president, twice.

Using human beings as political tools is reprehensible, but liberalism has never known any shame. "the end justifies the means" but there is never an end, by design.

BTW - republican is NOT conservative. There's no difference between dem & repub, I don't think there ever has been ........ not now.

I believe that Ms. Brewer is asking the president to spend $billions without congressional approval.

Congress can properly fund the border. They simply choose to avoid the problem, and let the president take the heat.

Why is everyone giving Texas a free pass? So maybe jan's finger wagging and scorpion eating scared the immigrants away from AZ and overloaded texas, or maybe what is left of sb1070 is having the desired effects and discouraging folks from coming to AZ unless it's on a free bus ride out of Texas.

amazing that you all think it's impossible for the Gov. to have gotten to the bottom of the issue without a diatribe on a system that is obviously working for AZ while Texas is left looking at it's toes.

and indeed- how dare anyone assume to actually contact those you so depend on for your daily dose of rage and frustration that you must require.

do you all ever get tired of complaining while doing nothing to actually fix the problem? unless -not- having something to complain about is the actual problem... in that case please carry on, at least everyone else can see how committed you are to your position.

Article comment by: Poor Jan

As if to help explain Arizona's problems, Jan makes it clear she is ignorant of the existence or responsibilities of the Legislative Branch.

Were her right wing Congressional brethren not so obsessed with obstructionism and reelection, THEY might have provided leadership and done something about immigration.

She does think Arizonan's are stupid.

But then, with the likes of Brewer, Horn, Pearce, Arpaio or Babeu-- to name just a few--being elected time and again, she does have supporting evidence.
