Letter: Let's not lose out on a great opportunity

Editor:

Dec. 28, my wife and I finally paid a visit to My Dobro, a recently opened bar, grill and live music venue located in the Fry's shopping mall.  A friend was playing drums with a country blues trio of excellent quality and had invited us to drop in.

Two things astounded me upon entering the restaurant. The first was the huge, clean, beautifully decorated space with museum-quality instruments and paraphernalia on the walls, mostly guitars of all genres including a dobro guitar.

Second, the place was completely empty except for our table of six to eight people, all friends of the musicians.  There were no patrons at the bar, no people eating at the many comfortable tables (I was told the food is very good) and no children playing in the specially assembled child play area.

It was difficult to contain my surprise and disappointment at the total lack of support by the local community.  Someone said that the place is busy on Sunday afternoons when football is on the several big-screen TVs but football will be played only another month or so.  And then...?

When we left later on I could only think that, confusing name or not, someday soon Cottonwood may have lost a fine community-oriented venue and gathering place and not even have known it was there.  What a shame.

I visited My Dobro when it first opened and I was happily surprised at how clean and well decorated it was. The previous establishment was a "hole in the wall" that smelled like a sewage treatment plant!. This was definitely a welcome addition to the normally well kept Frys shopping center. I always
see the owners, Mickey and Lisa walking around, introducing themselves and making you feel welcome. I have come to know them both and and feel like part of the Dobro family. Its comforting to know if there ever is an issue with my dining experience, I know who to talk to. One of them is always there watching every detail of their business, i like that!. I have never met the owners of The Tavern, Nicks etc The food is awesome. I have tried several things on their menu and it has always been delicious. As for the prices, I don't think they are any higher than similar eateries in Old Town. You get what you pay for in life. The warm atmosphere, good food, and live music make this place a winner in my book!

My wife Lisa and I purchased Players Sports Bar & Grill 4 months ago located at Frys Plaza. We have a combined 50+ years experience in the food and beverage industry. Our goal is to provide a clean facility, with quality food at reasonable prices. I want to thank all of our regular customers as well look forward to serving The Verde Valley for a long time to come.

Are we a sports bar? Yes, we have eight 70'' HD TV's for all sports. Are we a restaurant? Yes, we offer quality, cleanliness and a comfortable atmosphere to enjoy our food. Our prices are on par with any other like restaurant in the Verde Valley.
Lisa and I are both musicians and we do have live music at MY Dobro Grill & Spirits for your enjoyment 3 to 5 days a week.

A Dobro is a guitar and in the dictionary, Dobro also stands for "Goodness" You can call it "MY Goodness" if you like! After four months of opening we are pleased to say we love the Verde Valley, we love our community of Cottonwood and thank all the people who enjoy it. Thank you for your support.

Kind regards,

Mickey & Lisa Young

The atmosphere is ok- well rehabbed from previous condition but...

The food just isn't quite there yet. the prices are high and the quality is so so.

The 'it' factor is a tricky thing to capture. They need to examine the menu's of the places that are thriving (the tavern, nates etc..) and at least match that.

Hoping they get it right soon... and find great success.

It's not up to the 'community' to support a business that isn't offering products or services the community wants.

My Dobro owners have two choices: (a) identify their intended clientele and advertise what they have to offer, or (b) get the city council to pass a law mandating patronization of their establishment.

Maybe the issue is that they are searching for an upscale (willing to pay high prices) clientele that doesn't exist in Cottonwood.

From your description it sounds like a Nashville version of the 'Hard Rock Cafe'. Zoomers was crowded every weekend because they catered to young people and played their music.

My guess is that most people aren't into partying in an antiseptic, expensive bar. Why do you think that 'dives' do so well? It's because people like to 'slum it' and 'cut the badger loose' once in awhile with good booze, good beer and simple good food!

My Dad told me, "The trick to carrying on is not getting carried out!"

On a recent visit to Subway, I remarked to my companion, what the heck is My Dobro?

Without missing a beat he said, "It was opened by two brothers, one said to the other, 'It's my dough bro, I'll name it whatever I want!'"

LMAO

Article comment by: Maybe It's The Name

I remember reading about this venue's opening. Maybe the name needs to be changed to let people know it about food and music. Maybe some more advertising or signage. I don't know, but it is definitely a step up from a dirty, loud sports bar with questionable clientele.
