Letter: Another unending war?

Editor:

Are you for, or, against Military action in Syria? Why?

PF: Against. Why: Our wars seem to continue about 10 years after the mission is accomplished.

@Phil, I'm agreeing with you on this one. Syria is not our war, and neither was Iraq or Afghanistan, just to name a few.

We haven't done so well in others' Civil Wars, either.

Syria is a Religious Civil War. We know from experience that we cannot win a Religious War. Syria is not our responsibility and not our war.

Of course, Vladimir Putin, the kindest, wisest politician in world History.

Anyone stupid, biased and ignorant enough to have the gall to write this tripe: "I would vote for Putin for President any day over the rest of the corrupt politicians in Washington,' would do well to stay unnamed and just be known as some 'dumb moron.'

@ Putin for President
Be sure to read all the comments, too--especially the ones from Georgians, Chechens, and Soviet dissidents.

Putin's Op Ed dated 09-11-13, makes more sense than anything Obama has ever said since he has been President. It is clear, concise and easy to understand. Any liberal would be proud of what he says and could only wish that Obama said it first. When will Obama give a speech that makes sense and where he makes a command decision to show that he is an actual leader. I would vote for Putin for President any day over the rest of the corrupt politicians in Washington.

@ Slater Slater & Kitt Milhause
Yes, civil war is the lowest rung in Hell. And yes, the entire international community should be outraged by Assad's use of a weapon all nations have agreed to ban from any battlefield, if in fact he has. But put a stop to it within that nation's sovereign borders?

Look at it this way: Sherman's march to the sea was an unmitigated travesty. Those watching in Europe were horrified by a burned-earth tactic that went out with the Romans. Should England and France have jumped in to save Southern rebels' women and children from Abraham Lincoln's army?

Or look at Ireland. The Brits and Orangemen were beating up on the Catholics and breaking international protocols right and left. Should the U.S. have provided air cover for the I.R.A.? Or was it better to wait until all parties were so sick of the carnage that a little gentle diplomatic nudging could help them all save face?

Or look at Rwanda. Would invasion by a foreign force of colonial powers have saved Tutsis or made the slaughter worse?

Or how about the U.S.A. today? Some of the tactics some of our government agencies have and are using to maintain "order" among some of our citizens are pretty unsavory. They're not on the order of Middle Eastern human rights violations, but I'm sure you want them stopped as much as you want Assad to stop beating up on his dissidents. But would you welcome a batch of cruise missiles from Russia or China? Or even a U.N. peacekeeping operation?

Liberal Lunacy

March of the incompetents
obama dispatches Susan Rice to make the case for attacking Syria to the American Public
Remember when she blamed the Benghazi terror attack t on an Internet video.

The US secretary of state has said that President Bashar al-Assad has one week to hand over his entire stock of chemical weapons to avoid a military attack. Kerry added that he had no expectation that the Syrian leader would comply.

District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray has proclaimed the second week in September to be District of Columbia Lifeline Awareness Week in an effort to sign up more people for taxpayer funded phones.

More of our money flushed down the toilet
U.S. taxpayers have spent at least $1,010,354,195 on Syrian humanitarian aid for fiscal years 2012 and 2013 according to official numbers from the United States Agency for International Development

Team Pants Suit

We just gotta blame Bush somehow
Political Capital show on Bloomberg News, Bloomberg View columnist Margaret Carlson formerly of CNN and Time magazine blamed former President George W. Bush's "lies" for America's unwillingness to support military action against the Syrian government

PBS's McLaughlin Group this weekend, media mogul Mort Zuckerman predicted, "Part-time employment is going to grow from 25 percent of the workforce to close to 50 percent of the workforce in part because of the problems of healthcare obligations." (obamacare)

A moment of clarity
MSNBC executive editor Richard Wolffe slammed President Obama for having yet to give a clear rationale for military intervention in Syria. I do think that the president’s press conference today was actually embarrassing. It was as muddled and unconvincing as you could possibly imagine.

That darn global warming
UK Daily Mail: Record return of Arctic ice cap as it grows by 60% in a year with top scientists warning of global cooling. Remember when Al the crazed sex poodle Gore said we were all going to burn up in another year of so. There has been a 60 per cent increase in the amount of ocean covered with ice compared to this time last year, the equivalent of almost a million square miles.

@ Kitt Milhause - There is a long history of US individuals lending their physical and/or material support to foreign conflicts. The "Abraham Lincoln Brigade" fighting for the communists in the Spanish Civil War and the Boston pipeline to the IRA are two recent examples. I propose that those who are hellbent on giving aid and comfort to Al Qaeda in Syria go ahead and follow their intellectual forefathers example. Just leave the rest of us out of it

When we go to War your right we are very
terrorizing.Otherwise you wouldn't have Social Security or Welfare to feed the children.
Unlike Syria and many others who gas the
children as the world looks the other way.
Hitler would be very proud.

If a despot is secular and decidedly anti-Jihadi, then killing ones citizens with nerve agent is to be permitted without consequences? See you good Christian "lets stay out of it" advocates in church on Sunday.

Leaving aside the absolute absurdity of supporting Al Qaeda forces in one theater while bombing them with impunity in others, what possible national security issue is at stake here that warrants probable war with Russia?

"US trained Saddam in the use of chemical weapons"

Dunno, but we apparently helped him buy the makings of them and failed to complain when he used them.

Funny how Iraqgate never resulted in any prosecutions, eh? Maybe that had something to do with Bush I being an ex-CIA man.

Here's a more focused story that mentions Iraq's use of mustard gas and sarin (and the USSR's use of gas in Afghanistan):

Yeah, we're shocked, shocked to find that poison gas is being used by a civilized nation!
