Letter: No talking during the movie!

I love the movies. I enjoyed the most recent installment of the Star Trek saga. I enjoyed sitting in a dark theater sharing the experience with other film goers. There were a few laughs and gasps in reaction to the action on screen but no one talked during the film. The audience knew the first rule in movie etiquette: No talking during the movie!

This did not occur when I attended the 4 p.m., July 17, showing of the film The East at the wonderful Mary D. Fisher Theater in Sedona. I sat on the right side of the theater near the front. The people sitting behind me and others in the theater continued to have verbal conversations throughout the film. I had trouble hearing the dialogue and concentrating on the action of the film. Their rudeness, arrogance and lack of consideration for their fellow filmgoers was astonishing.

When the film is introduced, the emcee should give a friendly but direct reminder to not talk during the film. This is not the only time this has occurred when I have attended this theater. If this is not addressed, film patrons will stop attending the theater.

Mary D. Fisher, the generous donors, the hard working Board of Directors and the great executive director all have given the Verde Valley the opportunity to see brilliant, thought-provoking, thoughtful, quirky independent films. Their gift to us is most generous and I am most grateful. It is a shame that their bright star is tarnished by a few, rude, inconsiderate film patrons.

Gab is included in the price of admission. Get Netflix. No admission and gab is optional.

Why, the obnoxious, inconsiderate nincompoops just might choose to stand their ground and shoot you for 'attacking them.

Lord knows it works for some people.

Perhaps that theater should refuse admission to those unable to converse non-verbally in the dark. However, I suspect the issue could be better addressed by directly advising the talkers that they are interfering with your enjoyment of the film.

Direct confrontation is scary. But there is a polite, low-risk, and usually effective strategy you can try.

Determine the closest talker to your position, look at them, smile politely, and say, "Excuse me. Sorry to interrupt, but I have a hard time enjoying the film while you're talking. Could you please save your conversation for later?"

At this point the other talkers will typically take note of your request. But if they seem blithely unaware, look at them, raise your voice, and add: "And would the rest of you loudmouths also shut up?"
