Letter: 2nd Amendment says what it means and means what it says

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

That is all the 2nd amendment is, one sentence, and it means just what it says.

I have been a member of the NRA for more than 50 years and have read articles on the 2nd amendment many times in the past, but at no time have I read anything to do with slaves or slave uprising having anything to do with it. So when I read the letters to the editor of Bond and Nelson I was surprised at what I saw and thought, “have I missed something here?” I admit that I am not very studious, so rather than take issue with them, I waited.

It didn’t take long. When I saw the letter from Vicki Jo Anderson in today’s paper I knew what had happened. They tried to get away with revising history and found they couldn’t put one over on the people of Cottonwood. Ms Anderson immediately took issue with them because she knew what she was talking about and they were trying to pull the wool over our eyes and it made them look like dunces.

I, and the rest of your readership, should give Ms Anderson our thanks for undoing what a couple of bullies have tried to do. We are certainly lucky to have her in Cottonwood.

Ms. James: "...slaves were called persons but they weren't citizens… Does that mean they weren't covered by the 4th Amendment?"

No, I was mistaken to claim slaves and indentured servants were not "of the people." Those who bought and sold persons as property to avoid contracting with persons for their labor would likely have disagreed.

@ Nancy J
I don't think so. The Bill of Rights says "people" not "citizens" and the Constitution says "persons in servitude" not "slaves". I think it was supposed to apply to everyone, but the states didn't change their laws and the federal gov didn't follow its own rules. Maybe that’s why we had the Civil War.

Jason, I am not lame. The king's writs gave the Governors the authority to approve the searches. But o.k. S&S didn't stop until the Civil War.
@ Nutso Fast: In the original Constitution slaves were called persons but they weren't citizens. (Article I, section 2 and Article IV, section 2) Does that mean they weren't covered by the 4th Amendment?

@ Nancy James:

I think "radification" is a very recent occurrence.

The Fourth Amendment to the Constitution:
"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

Slaves and indentured servants were not freemen and were thus not "of the people," so I'm curious how this amendment was "based on slavery."

Your lame. The 4th Amendment was about British writs of assistance. Look it up. It didn't stop warrant-less search and seizure on plantations.

What the NRA and its minions do not understand is that when Obama comes to get your guns he will not send the ATF or FBI to your door. It will be by cruise missle into your bedroom window, or a drone strike. The sad thing is when the missle hits it will destroy your house, but the exploding ammo in the basement will destroy the whole block and all your innocent gun-hating liberal neighbors.

That was after the radification. But the 4th Amendment is based on slavery. The slave patrols used to go through slave quarters taking anything they thought slaves shouldn't have.

@ Far Out...
Yeah why aren't the libs tying slavery to freedom of speech and the press? When Thomas Jefferson was president he tried to stop pamphleteering because a journalist published stories about him and Sally Hemmings.

if all it takes to get you to resort to 'panywaisted' name calling and other acts of digital bravado is a slight response to a comment... you might want to look into more training.

your claim that all 100 spots filled points to the fact that your scare tactics are working...bravo.

spamming public comment sections as free advertising is pretty weak tea though. maybe you should barter with the paper to place a full paged ad that includes zombie evasion tips and how to fold your own foil beanie!

of course your numbers are growing 'geometrically' if you say so. this is the internet- everything you say is true right?

go hawk your wannabe militia wares someplace else or sack it up and take out a real add so people can see what you are... a simple commercial enterprise profiting off of the very 'bat eared' man you claim to despise with such gusto... if not for your caricature of him you would be playing bb gun war in your backyard.

now go get your bottle of silver bullet gun lube and get back to polishing your little shiny gun... so the adults can have a reasonable discussion. mmmkay? thanks... bye now...

@Black Rider: Did you write that script for Homeland Security? Or maybe the NSA? Give it up, guy or gal as the case may be. We were having a good discussion of Vicki Jo Anderson's interpretation of the 2nd Amendment before you showed your "true" colors.

@Bill Harwell: Vicki Jo Anderson really did prove the 2nd Amendment back then was about limiting government sticking its nose into the people's business and they way they wanted to run their states. Anything else is so stupid. Why do you think Marxist liberals keep trying to tie the issue of slavery to the right to bear arms?

@far rider
as far as Marauders is the best place in Arizona to get training ????? Not really !! Sorry!!
To be honest with you and the readers here I gotta say that marauders lost any and all credibility with me when they started to offer their "Zombie Survival 101 course" !!!! kinda lets you all know that they are not really a valid type trainer if they offer a ZOMBIE SURVIVAL program.

For the best available training there are several options and many that are much better and affordable then marauders.

For all those that are interested in quality training check out gunsite in Chino Valley.
They are well rounded and nationaly recognised as one of the top training facilities in the country. Now they are not a militia trainer however they are a top quality firearms training facility for those that wish to persue vieried types of firearms training.

Far Rider says, “Bat Ears Barry has not only turned out to be the greatest gun salesman of all time, he has also distinguished himself as the most prolific recruiter for the Militia in all of American history.”

Apparently, you have a deep prejudice for folks with big ears. Bad news, Rider: my wife and others like here will never join you, in fact she will oppose you to fight for their right to have big ears.

But seriously, if Barry is in fact the greatest gun salesman and he has in fact spurred booming gun sales during a severe recession, then two things are clear:
He has seriously undermined his own “plan” to attack your militia, Doh!

2. He really is creating manufacturing jobs here in America! Yeah! Right?

Rider, did you ever see, 'In Search of the Lost Arc'? In one scene, a menacing assailant with a long sword challenges the hero to a fight to the death. The hero pulls out a pistol and shoots him.

Are you sure you guys aren’t the ones’ with the swords?

"Scare away"? Are you kidding me? The Arizona Militia has had more applications for our next Field Training Exercise than there were slots available. We are now having to turn applicants away.

To be sure, the folks at Marauders Tactical Training are operating a business, and part of their motivation for offering to train us for free is get more people to pay them for the more advanced Training that they offer. Last time I checked, there was no law against operating a business for profit.

There has never been any attempt to conceal that fact. We not only don't have a problem with Marauders offering free Training as a mechanism to get more business for themselves, we applaud it.

I don't have a problem paying top dollar for quality tactical firearms, so I don't have a problem with paying for quality Tactical Training. Marauders is the best place in Arizona to get that.

If you don't agree, then don't go. There, wasn't that easy?

All that the Arizona Militia gets from this deal is a chance for us to train at the Marauders facility. We don't sell any products, and we don't get paid to conduct Training. I have personally had to pay hundreds of dollars out of my own pocket to support past Field Training Exercises, and never got back a dime for my effort. I never expected to.

We don't even accept cash donations. Instead, we ask folks to buy Gift Cards from major suppliers like Sportsmans Guide and Maine Military, and send those if they want to donate. Those gift cards are then used to order more equipment for our volunteers.

I suppose that it scares the pantywaists to think that there are those of us who would actually spend our own money in order to offer Training and equipment to others, and make no profit in the process. It scares them because that is evidence of the level of committment that some of us feel towards supporting the Militia.

The costs of maintaining our website are also paid out of our own pockets. Mostly my pocket, though some of our members have chipped in from time to time towards the twelve dollars or so that it takes to keep our web registration current each year.

Not exactly Bernie Madhoff here.

We don't even accept cash for the small amount of advertising that appears on our website. Instead, we accept trades for the products being advertised. The only advertisement on our website currently is for a series of books, so we accepted one copy of each of the three books in exchange for three months of keeping the author's ad up on our home page.

Before that, we had an ad up for Silver Bullet Gun Oil (SBGO). We got a case of their product in exchange for putting their ad up. We distributed those bottles of SBGO among our members. A lot of those members started ordering SBGO on their own, which is a testament to the quality of the product. We never got any cash for that deal, either. Instead, the company that produces SBGO got a lot of orders from our members.

As for the "polarizing of a few folks", that is a gross understatement. The fact that the store shelves nationwide are now devoid of any tactical firearms or full-capacity magazines is proof that Bat Ears Barry has done a helluva lot more to "polarize" our nation that little ole us.

I don't see any thinking person falling for the kind of weak and flaccid spew that we are seeing from the Leftists who have been drinking the Obamunists' Kool-Aid.

Patriots in Arizona are a whole lot smarter than that. The proof of that can be seen by the statewide shortage of tactical firearms that are no longer on store shelves.

Instead, those tactical firearms are now in the hands of the Militia.

Country Boy, I understand the utility of remaining hidden from the enemy during Tactical Ground Operations. I served as an Infantry Officer in the U.S. Army for thirteen years. My first job on Active Duty was as a Light Infantry Rifle Platoon Leader.

In this case, however, we are talking about something entirely different. We are talking about training up new Militia volunteers ahead of the Civil War that we predict that the Obamunists will soon orchestrate against our nation.

At the moment, we are not trying to remain *entirely* hidden, because we are not on the battlefield. Not just yet, anyway.

Yes, we have been publicizing our upcoming Field Training Exercise in March 2013. But that is just the "tip of the iceberg" compared to everything else that is going on, and that has already been accomplished by the Arizona Militia. There is a lot more going on right now that we have *not* divulged.

The Arizona Militia has been conducting Field Training Exercises for the past five years. Part of that training was to "train the Trainers", which created an ever-increasing number of core Cadre within the Units that are now experiencing their greatest period of growth and expansion in our state's history.

Since the Obamunists began talking about legislating away our individual rights to anonymous ownership and possession of tactical firearms, there has been a 500 percent increase in the number of new volunteers. You read that right, FIVE HUNDRED PERCENT.

Bat Ears Barry has not only turned out to be the greatest gun salesman of all time, he has also distinguished himself as the most prolific recruiter for the Militia in all of American history.

I should know, because I am the one who answers all of the inbound emails generated from our website. I then refer each new volunteer to the Unit Leader or Point of Contact in their geographic area of Arizona.

Units have been increasing in size almost daily. New units are being formed up in nearly every county. The numbers of the Arizona Militia continue to increase geometrically. Not just in Yavapai County, but all over Arizona.

Divulging that information, however, does not reveal much about the Units and individuals themselves. Since each Unit operates completely independently, there is no one person in the Arizona Militia who knows the strength and disposition of all of the Units, nor all the names of the individuals within those units. Not even myself.

The Obamunists will never know just exactly how many of the Militia are in a given area until they start trying to confiscate our tactical firearms. Then their "process of discovery" will happen a bit more rapidly than they would prefer.

There is every reason to keep secret the identities of the individual members of the Militia. But there is no reason at all to conceal that the Militia exists.

We publicly announced that the Arizona Militia would conduct a Field Training Exercise in March, at the Marauders Tactical Training facility near Tonopah, Arizona. There was no reason to conceal that.

Now I can publicly announce that there are no more training slots available for that FTX, all available openings have been filled. Putting the information out to the public resulted in a tremendous response. There will be 100 volunteers who will be trained in March.

Once the results of our March FTX have been evaluated, there may be an announcement of yet another FTX. Time will tell, but the number of trained volunteers will continue to increase regardless. The independent Units in each County have been conducting their own Tactical Training, and will continue to do so.

Remember, just since Bat Ears took office in January of 2009, the NICS system has reported that 65 MILLION firearms have been sold into private hands in the USA. If only three percent of those were sold to Patriots who would volunteer for Militia service, that would equal a force of just under 2 Million.

There are an estimated 300 Million firearms owners in the USA today. If only three percent of those join the Militia, that would be 9 Million very angry Militia members who would fight the Obamunists tooth and nail.

I predict that there would be a much higher percentage of Patriots who would join the Militia in Arizona than there would be in other states. Should the Obamunists choose to try to force Arizona to disarm, they would be running headlong to a buzzsaw of Armed Resistance.
