Letter: What is America’s mission statement on how to deal with violence

President Obama set up a special committee to solve the issue of gun regulation among the citizens. All the talk shows are debating how to solve this problem of violence on our streets. More people are buying guns, and gun manufacturers are getting richer.

The problem is not too many guns among our citizens; what is problematic is Americaʼs mission statement about how to deal with violence. Basically, American Society has become mentally unstable. How schizophrenic does America have to be before letting go its grandiose fantasy of being a great military power?

America lags far behind other developed countries in health care, education system, care of the poor, but there is one thing about which it can always brag. America is Number One in Military Might. We are proud of our military men with their guns.

The media praises our men in uniform, who carry guns and kill with guns. Everyday the U.S. Budget Office writes out another hundred thousand dollar plus check to an industry producing military airplanes, warships, armored trucks, etc. Nobody talks about how Americans bow down to all things military, but rather the media constantly praise our brave men in uniform. And all we hear is how bad it is for citizens to own a gun.

Where is the reality?

Politicians are constantly telling us how we must cut federal spending on schools, elderly, sick people, prisons, and all social needs; yet no mention is made of cutting military spending. Is the military some holy place that we dare not touch, or even mention? The media is also fearful of this holy ground, seeming to skirt around any mention of our obscene military spending.

When America stops needing to be the Number One Military Force in the World, and stops idolizing gun carrying soldiers or sailors, we may honestly face reality. A true government meets the needs of all its people, and most Americans do not care to be top Military Might in the world.

Social values and principles start at top leadership; we might call it a trickle down theory. When Americaʼs leaders show us other ways to stop violence in world affairs without the use of guns, it is reasonable that down here on the streets we common people will have a model to follow in forming our social values. We ordinary citizens need leaders to show us how to stop violent people without the use of guns.

It can only start at the top -- where the money is. How the money is spent always reveals the true social values. Stop spending money to use guns for killing people around the world. The rest of we common people are watching and learning.

The sad truth is our military might is the only thing that keeps China from calling in our debt. It is our ability to threaten with military might that keeps us a world power.
This country doesn't have the money to cover its debts but can still destroy any other country in the world. We have come from being the example for the rest of the world to follow, to the bouncer or bully, to the rest of the world. We don't have to pay because we will beat them up if they don't like it. If there is a vulnerable country that has oil like Iraq or Afganistan we will send in our military and Haliburton and take what Haliburton wants and whoever Haliburton pays off besides Cheney lol. Greatest country in the world? I guess that depends on your standards.

If politicians, I say that because Barry-O couldn't lead dishwater down the drain, showed us other ways ? You mean like destroying our constitution ? Starting illegal wars ? Perpetually lying ? Having an arms broker, I mean Ambassador, supply guns and then allowing him and three others to die in Lybia ? Extending the misnamed patriot act ? That kind of leadership ? watching to see if we blink.We protect the freedom of nations that Hitler himself would never attack if he knew we were involved.
China,Russia and of course North Korea attack
us hourly via cyber.Whats that all about.Shutting down power grids,water plants
oil production,phones.
Let all our allies fight their own battles as our
word,signed agreements,handshakes mean
nothing.This country is turning into a liberal joke.

The U.S.A. spends more on the military than the next 25 nations on the list, COMBINED!

We should nationalize the oil industry and our health care industry! Why on earth should speculators and insurance companies be allowed to skim billions of dollars from the economy? The Wall St. boys involved in this desecration donate to much money to the GOP for this ever to be stopped you say? Hmmm, never say never!

First off I just gotta agree with Brian Carlson. I think he is spot on with that one.

Second, Do you live under a rock? Have you heard of SEQUESTRATION? They are cutting military spending and cutting it to a dangerous level. Wake Up!

This is why we have our GREAT MILITARY,

IF you aren't first, your last. and the biggest kid on the block doesn't get bullied! The biddest kid might get slapped from time to time however that kid hits hard in response to protect them and theirs!!

To Mr. Carlson:

May I remind you that when it really counted, that is to say when real, everyday American people's lives were on the line such as in OK City in '95, Atlanta in '96, New York, The Pentagon and Shanksville PA in 2001, The Military was nowhere near to protect us. I point this out as a proud veteran of the US Army. But the military is not the answer to all questions.
Ms. McIntosh is making a point about how violence permeates American society and civility, diplomacy and understanding have taken a distant back seat in our culture.

We do have a pretty powerful Mission Statement and I, for one, will live day to day upholding it.

of document the top two on our list is:

1. Declaration of Independence.

2. The US Constitution.

While you're retching, consider that the republicants have had the presidency 60% of the time since 1952.

And, I do agree, the right wing greed machine has turned the country 'narcissistic.'

Maybe Nancy and St. Ronnie should have just said, "Yes," rather than "No," and start the War on Drugs."
