Letter: Very disappointed in our city leadership
With such a huge response in qualified candidates, the Mayor and Council chose their own, instead of seeking fresh voices and new perspectives. Very disappointed in our city leadership.

Editorial: Hold your nose, political season is in full swing
A local politician last week described the coming month as one in which you hold your nose and dive in.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of truth in that.

It's naïve to expect there to be wholesale honor and integrity in the election process. A few candidates pull it off, but many more choose the down-and-dirty route to political success.

Editorial: We could use more leaders like Superintendent Goodwin, Mayor Currier
Politicians and bureaucrats wrote the book on political correctness. They're famous for talking a lot but never saying anything of substance.

That's why it's so refreshing to listen to Camp Verde School Superintendent Dennis Goodwin and Jerome Mayor Lew Currier.

They leave no doubt about where they stand on any given subject.

Letter: Joens ' work as mayor speaks volumes of the work she will do as supervisor
As a long time resident of Cottonwood, I believe I can say with certainty that Diane Joens has done a great job as Mayor of Cottonwood. If one looks back on her accomplishments as Mayor that benefit all the residents of Cottonwood and surrounding Verde Valley, they become almost too numerous to mention. water, sewers, library, rec center, outstanding police and fire departments, a stable economy, respect from our neighbors and for that matter the whole state, and much more.

Letter: Terrorist activites usually the work of terrorists
The atrocities such as the one in Orlando will continue until our President recognizes the cause.

They are not caused by gun owners. They are caused by terrorists!

Editorial: Yavapai College folks obviously need to have another meeting
There is a great newspaper editor in Maricopa who used to say, "It has to be a really good meeting to be better than no meeting at all."

For the record, she is legendary for getting things done. Right. The first time.

Editorial: A lesson in transparency, courtesy of Cottonwood
As we have noted in the past, there are those who love to lambaste the City of Cottonwood over its finances, with emphasis on the claim that the city does too much of its business behind the public's back.

Letter: Yes, I am running for mayor, and yes, I am a resident of Cottonwood
Recently, my candidacy for Mayor has become grist in Cottonwood's rumor mill so I'd like to dispel myths in circulation. I am running for the office, I am fully committed to serving one, four-year term and my candidacy is legitimate, as I reside in Mesquite Springs.

Letter: States failing their transgender citizens
The horrible event that occurred in Orlando this week is just one more reminder of the prejudice that exists against the LGBTI community. And no part of this community is more discriminated against than the transgender community.

Editorial: We're a better community today thanks to efforts of Lana Tolleson
The soon-to-be former President/CEO of the Cottonwood Chamber of Commerce, Lana Tolleson, was the very best kind of leader a community could hope to have.

Letter: Curious on cannabis? Consider this
A recent letter concerning "marijuana" inspired me to offer a counterpoint on Cannabis. Even the name 'marijuana' has a bit of history that many may not know. That slang name was given to cannabis in the early days of prohibition in hopes that it would play on people's fear of foreign sounding things.

Letter: Current consensus is previous consensus was wrong
I chuckled when I read the title the VI put on my last letter. I figured there might be a response from people who read what they expect to read, not what is written, and, sure enough, there were some Facebook comments that cry for replies. Since I don't do Facebook comments, I hope the VI will publish my replies.

Editorial: Lawyers closely watching taxing decision on vacation rentals
The primary beneficiary of any new law is an attorney of law.

Arizona's new law forbidding cities, towns and county governments from prohibiting vacation rentals in their communities is one sure to drum up business for lawyers.

Editorial: Meals on Wheels debate a good reason to have lunch together
It's probably long overdue for the town and staffs from the two senior centers to sit down and devote their full attention to the issue of the homebound senior meal program in Camp Verde and Beaver Creek.

I enjoy freedom and exhilaration of motorbike ride as much as next rider, but many motorbikes are just to loud to ride in or near residential areas.
