Letter: Senator Flake is right

The recent attack on Senator Flake by New York City’s Mayor Bloomberg brought several questions to my mind.

1. Isn’t he a little out of his territory in Arizona, and does he know or care how Arizonans feel about more gun legislation?

2. Does he know that in many parts of the country, his name is a byword for government intrusion into our private lives?

I am not a gun person myself, but I do believe in the second amendment rights for those who choose to exercise them.

I understand and share my fellow citizen’s reluctance to place even more information in the hands of the federal government, now apparently, including their ownership of guns. The recent scandals in Washington make it even more imperative that we guard against this type of assault on our rights.

I applaud Senator Flake’s stand against this latest intrusion and stand behind him.

Carol Lucas

I think that most people miss the point that criminals DO NOT go through background checks of any kind. The only people this will affect are those that are law-abiding citizens and don't need any more erosion of their Constitutional rights. Do something about the CRIMINALS. Don't take it out on those of us that abide by the laws.

If you don't like guns, don't move to the Wild, Wild, West! I am a 4th generation Arizonan and owning guns has always been a way of life for us and all our neighbors. I've never heard one story of anyone being seriously hurt, accidently or otherwise, from a firearm.

On opening day of dove season, me and all my buddies put our shotguns and ammo in our cars and trucks and went to school so we could head out to the sorghum fields straight after the last bell rang! Kids that tried that today would be labeled terrorists and imprisoned.

Personally, I am sick and tired of Midwesterners and Easterners moving to Arizona and trying to make it just like back home. Watching our state government being taken over and usurped by a bunch of foreigners (white people from other states, not Mexicans who were here first) is horrid beyond words!!!

The reason my grandfather, my father, myself and my children learned to speak Spanish is because we share a border with the Mexicans. It's the same reason they learned English.

All this T-Party and liberal hatred for others is too much.

Maybe we could take a page from the T-Party playbook and pass a law that states only people born in Arizona can vote on Arizona politics!!!! I think that just might be the answer!

Carol Lucas has as much right to her opinion of Michael Bloomberg as you do.

But she doesn't have her facts much straighter.

A national background check already exists: the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS.

It just doesn't work very well. Mainly because: '...information in the NICS is incomplete, particularly where mental health records are concerned, investigations found. That's because of what some of the system's critics call a huge legal loophole in the background check laws that put "guns in the hands of killers," according to a study conducted by a group of mayors.
The system is only as good as the data. And "the data is the real problem," said Mark Glaze, the director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, an organization whose recent in-depth study found millions of mental health records were missing from the federal background check system.'
(Per CNN 2013/01/30 How the violent mentally ill can buy guns.)

Senator Flake voted against the gun control measure favored by Mayor Bloomberg. However, Senator Flake voted for the Grassley amendment which tried to plug that huge hole in current requirements. Until this is done, the NICS can be worse than worthless because gun sellers tend to rely on the NICS rather than their own judgment (as happened in the above article).

Personally, I think Jeff Flake was correct on both counts.

Doesnt buy into this nonsense at all
Why don't you look up Colorado's new expanded background checks law if you think it doesn't give the government more power. Either through voter apathy or the legislature not telling all the details of the new laws they were pushed through. They are so overly restrictive even county Sherriffs are suing to have them undone. There is enough regulations that just about anything having to do with a gun can now be turned in to a crime if the government so desires. Thank goodness the Senators had the common sense to reject them. We have background checks in place now just enforce the law. If you or anyone else thinks it is the governments job to take care of us you are part of the problem. Go hang out with the other sheep.

don't laugh. Just recently a person called 911,
and the operator told the person 'protect yourself'
we didn't get enough revenue to pay for police
officers...now this is not a laughing matter.

Carol, Jeff Flake is a Senator... that implies he serves the whole nation, not just the citizens of AZ...Bloomberg is an American citizen and has a right to express his opinion, and form a group to do so... I may not agree with what either of them say at times... but just because they are from some locale doesn't make what they say right or wrong... I laugh at your thinking further background checks is placing more in the hands of the govt... I like to think the govt is a chance to protect us... it seems that people love defense and scream when one cent is cut from its budget because it protects us, but let anything else be put in the hands of the govt and they scream that is too much govt.... it seems like hypocrisy to me.
