Letter: Lessons learned at Steubenville?

Editor:

As I was pondering in my mind about the Steubenville case and how the 2 football players were charged with their act and were guilty. It’s a sad and tragic event, but also these things and activities of hazing happen more than it should, because of their athletic status. I hope this is a lesson is to not play favorites within the schools, because of the glory.

I love athletics, specifically baseball/softball and hockey so I do understand the discipline, but I do believe that schools all across America need to get tough on those kids that think they’re above the rules because of them being a cheerleader or a football player. The thing is, be proud, but do not boast it. The other thing is, in the real world if you want to be known and successful, you have to prove it.

I hope schools all across the country will learn a valuable lesson from Steubenville is to not play favorites and to be fair and if a jock fails class then they don’t play and enforce it. The thing was when I went to high school, I was subject to the rules and regulations as if I was an average kid and I was treated like the other geeks that had to work and apply themselves and didn’t get special treatment and got hazed by a lot of the jocks. So it’s time to sympathize with the girl victim for what happened, because she did nothing wrong and was just at the wrong place and at the wrong time.

The bullying across schools need to stop big time. There also should be a crackdown of those parties as well, especially if there is illegal activity going on. That is how you prevent Steubenville cases like that one. It doesn’t mean that all can be eliminated, but a lot would be taken care of by being tough and fair on disciplinary issues and not the good ole boy system. Also teach about respect and be a good citizen since most people are into athletics.

as long as they drank to much and that is all the fault of popular culture and parents?

you all complain about how popular culture and giving everyone a pass is the problem yet you seem to be the first to blame the victim and give the perpetrators a pass?

really?

Young ladies shouldn't get drunk at a jock party is empathatic, but it is the victims fault and the parents need to teach their children about sexual boundries and learn to be tougher on stupidity. I also blame MTV but also parents need to tell their kids "It's called show ratings"

Nice letter Derek!

Another lesson that might be learned is Maybe young ladies shouldn't get so drunk at a jock party that they pass out and leave themselves at risk. I often wonder if teenagers don't watch to much MTV and think being a drunken out-of-control fool is the hip thing to do. After all, Snooki does it! So does DJ Pauly and Bow-Wow and The Situation and any number of other characters shown on TV. Life imitating art? Hmmmm...
