Letter: Admittedly, it was a poor choice of words

Editor:

Recently, in response to my letter concerning the relationship between slavery and the second amendment [2/21/2013], I received an e mail from a valued and respected person who admonished me for characterizing those unable or unwilling to research the issue as “ignorant”.

Admittedly, it was a poor choice of words.

My only defense for the characterization is that after reading so very, very many “comments” on the VI website from so many anonymous posters whose only purpose is seemingly to “vent their spleen” with endless manifestations of their overt historical stupidity, I became frustrated.

To all of those whom I offended with the word “ignorant” [with the singular exception of those anonymous posters referenced above], I humbly apologize for my use of the word.

Sometimes, it is just too tempting to respond in kind to those who continually express themselves with such vitriol.

To John Lockway and Peter Nelsen, thank you for your excellent letters on the subject of slavery and the second amendment.

John A. Bond

For Mr. Peter - I have never, and will never, demand anyone to shut up. Nowhere have I ever told Mr. Bond to stop commenting - For Mr. Falbo - I'm anonymous because I chose to be, but actually I'm not, you see the VI records my email at every post, and also my IP. But since my commenting has a 5:1 positive to neg. ratio, and so far I've received 4 invitations to write online articles (can only manage 2 though) I think I'm doing OK.

Isn't it interesting that don juan bond, petie of YC, and of course the always faithful sidekick salbo, detest folks that they don't agree with for not using their names. Very Very selective and Very Very phoney outrage.

As a wise old man once told me,
An ignorant man is not necessarily stupid, but a stupid man is always ignorant.

Nux Man,
Freedom of speech is our most unique and powerful Right. You obviously agree, (though you would rather have Mr. Bond shut up).

Local folks who take the time to stimulate discussion on important issues help some of us to expand our thinking and encourage us to self educate on subjects like history, the budget, taxes, health care, etc. Contrary to popular conservative belief, this is exactly what the founders hoped for: an educated, independent citizenry.

If you disagree with Mr. Bond, show us why he is wrong. But do us all a favor and refrain from anonymously attacking his character, which is boring.

But to attach one's name to one's words requires courage in many countries (China, Iraq, Afghanistan, North Korea come to mind.) Your fear of revealing your identity is unfounded...welcome to America, my friend!

@ John Bond

No need to apologize for calling some responders ignorant. Ignorant just means you aren't familiar or educated about the subject being discussed. Stupid would be the insulting word, but if I was to generalize, that word would fit at least a few contributers to these posts, and I am sure MJ will tell us who he thinks that is.

We are all ignorant on certain subjects but only stupid people think they have the answer for anything and everything. Perfect choice of words Mr. Bond those that were offended were just ignorant of the definition.

Hang onto your breaches, Mr. Bond. Inquiring minds are well aware that a successful campaign begins with knowing thy enemy. But why bother debunking a thesis full of interminable distortions, written by a tort lawyer turned gun-control champion who cites academic hoaxes as proof of his theory, published in an agricultural college's 31st-rate law review, when we have your interminable distortions, published by the Verde Valley's premier community newspaper? You're truly much better at channeling Bertie Ollman.

Gee, Nux, if that is what you really believe, you sure are ignorant about liberals.

And, conversely, conservatives.

Given some of your occasional nonsensical comments, I would add that it isn't just your boss or company you worry about you really do not want to embarrass yourself in a small community.

Regarding anonymity, some may even view it as a type of cowardice one uses to avoid accountability.

One is prone to say stupider things when people don't know who is saying them.

At least the Jim Barbers and John Bonds are proud to associate their name and reputation with what they think.

Me? I can appreciate you wanting to keep your particular brand of 'genius' anonymous.

Article comment by: Remember this Bond?

Surely others have been around long enough to remember when you had to actually purchase the Verde Independent to read it, and you actually had to write and then mail a letter to the editor. Yes John Bond was around then also and after having mailed a schathing letter to the editor over some issue or the other there appeared to be other citizens writing in and supporting his position on the matter. However an astute editor named Dan Engler happened to notice that all the letters arriving in support of Mr. Bond happened to have the same typewriter idiosyncrasies. The same letters had the same missing points etc. of course the only conclusion at that time was that Mr. Bond had written several letters using different names or that the entire area was going over to his house and borrowing his typewriter. Amazing how he now so detests those who choose not to put their names on their postings. Maybe he means they should use someone else's name.

So Mr. Bond, in the same breath as he apologizes for calling people "ignorant," then proceeds to call them stupid.

Why is it that so many of the arrogant and condescending liberals are so utterly lacking in common sense?

Nice! An apology wrapped in another insult. Way to go there Mr. Bond, clear whatever that is you call a conscience while demeaning your fellow humans just a little bit more,....... excuse me while I pick up that piece of spleen I just dropped.
The 2nd has NOTHING to do with slavery. As with so many other liberal hacks that were sucked into Inglorious Barry's various poop-talk-your-own reality schemes, this is just another one that lingered a bit too long in the bowl. Not even Barry's version of Pravda, (otherwise known as msnbc), is trying to drag this b.s. story line anymore.
As for anonymous somehow being "bad", well, that only reinforces the knowledge that you & yours are certainly liberal progressive communists who's only dream is to destroy individuality & freedom. We vote, serve in the military, and volunteer anonymously - it is a corner stone of a free society that ALL voices should carry the same value, to which anonymity at the ballot box insures us. I for one am in the local business community and do not want my personal comments to reflect on my boss or his company - a tactic liberalism most certainly uses to defame and marginalize those who would point out their faults. Nice try though.
