Letter: Where can your tax dollars help the most?

Editor:

Dear Friends of the Verde Valley Senior Center, please consider the hungry elders in our community when making the decision as to where your tax dollars can help the most! According to the National Council on Aging, millions of persons aged over 60 must choose between buying food or medicine and paying for heat. The Verde Valley Senior Center served over 58,000 meals in the last year via their Meals-on-Wheels and community dining programs and has served thousands of residents throughout the Verde Valley for over 33 years. The Senior Center is a conduit, a lifeline, offering nutrition programs, transportation services and social activities to hundreds of senior citizens on a daily basis.

By donating up to $200 per person or $400 per married couple to the Verde Valley Senior Center before year end, December 31, 2012, you may be eligible for the Arizona Working Poor Tax Credit and reduce your state tax liability with a dollar-for-dollar reduction. You can help the Senior Center sustain its mission to provide wholesome, nutritious meals, transportation and other valuable services to the community’s elders and be rewarded. Every dollar you contribute is a dollar less you owe in taxes.

Even if you have already donated to the Schools Tax Credit program, the Arizona State Charitable Tax Credit is available to you nonetheless, because the Working Poor Tax credit is different from the School Tax Credit.

The Verde Valley Senior Center is a qualified 501 (c) 3 nonprofit corporation and gifts are tax deductible as provided by law. We are a qualified charitable organization for the Arizona Working Poor tax credit. Please contact a qualified tax advisor for advice on how to file and benefit from your donations or go to the Arizona Department of Revenue website at www.azdor.gov/brochure/710.pdf or call Taxpayer Assistance, (602) 255-3381 or (800) 352-4090. It should also be noted that the Verde Valley Senior Center offers tax preparation service from Feb. 5 through April 15 annually.

To make your donation, please do one or the other:

• Mail your check to: Verde Valley Senior Center, P.O. Box 681, Cottonwood, AZ. 86326

• Donations may be made online at www.verdevalleyseniorcenter.org via PayPal credit card services.

Your investment in helping us stamp out hunger amongst those who taught us values and left us a legacy is desperately needed. Remember, anyone paying Arizona state income taxes and itemizing deductions is eligible for this reward as long as the donation is made prior to midnight, December 31, 2012.

Being able to target taxes that you're going to pay one way or the other is a fantastic win for the payer as well as the recipients. A rare stroke of intelligence on the part of state government, whoever thought this one up.

I did not know that. Thank you Elaine for the good work you do. The Senior Center helped us out when we needed help, we'll do what we can to pay it back.
