Letter: Obama administration waging class and ethnic warfare

Editor:

In a center-right country whose citizenry, in the past, admired, respected, and hoped to join those citizens whose initiative and entrepreneurial skills have taken them to upper-class wealth, it is disheartening to see that the entitlement mentality of so many is now threatening that which has made this country the envy of the world.

Worse yet, it is evident that the Obama administration, and their liberal/left cohorts, have driven a wedge of divisiveness between our people – class and ethnic warfare - that, unless checked, threatens the very future of our country and our children. It is stunning that this president has so alienated business owners and corporate leadership, the job creators we so desperately need to have confidence in our government, to the point that they are now afraid to invest in an uncertain future, and yet, has been able to deflect the attention of so many struggling Americans from the fact that his policies have been a miserable failure.

Mr. Obama blames George Bush for the depth of his failure and the Republican Party of blocking legislation he claims would revive the economy. His surrogates spare him from having to make the charge himself, that the wealthy and conservatives, in general, are racists.

He tries to hitch his star to President Clinton’s economy as if it is proof of the excellence of his own policies. And he tells us that the wealthy have somehow pushed the rest of us down while they coasted to success. He tells us that “we” (meaning Big Brother benevolent government), not the owners of successful private businesses, “made that happen”, while muttering not a peep about government’s role in those who fail under a morass of regulatory quicksand.

The proof of the successful division that keeps Americans from seeing the facts of the failure of the administration to properly address a failing economy were evident in a recent Pew Research Center poll. Overall, a majority of the respondents believe that rich people are intelligent and hardworking. But, they have come to believe that the rich are greedy and less honest than the average American, this in spite of the fact that the wealthy and conservatives of this country are much more charitable than liberals. Mitt Romney, himself, gave the inheritance he received from his wealthy father, George, to his church. For liberals, it is more honorable to give away OPM – Other People’s Money.

Mr. Obama forgets to mention that candidate George Bush warned us that the economy, in 2000, was headed into recession, that Dems shouted him down for “talking down the economy,” that the media acknowledged the fact only after the election was decided and, by March 1, 2001 the recession was upon us. Mr. Clinton, in an effort to help the president during the convention, also forgot history. Yes, the economy initially surged under his stewardship. But Alan Greenspan warned in September, 2000 of trouble ahead in financial markets.

Clinton failed to remind us that the “high-tech bubble” burst, driving the NASDAQ down 46 percent and that it has yet to recover to that point. He also forgot to mention that it was his signature on the 1999 repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, his Treasury Secretary, Robert Rubin, who brokered the final deal on Capitol Hill that lay open the road to the financial meltdown in 2008. The repeal of the law, which had been in effect since the Great Depression, “…paved the way for banks to invest in risky investments like mortgage-backed securities and collateralized debt obligations…” that played the major role in the disaster.

The president’s folks fail to mention his lack of interest in his promise of immigration reform if only given the chance. It is convenient now, to renew that promise, after more than 3 1⁄2 years in office, when he suddenly needs every Hispanic vote in a closer-than-he-anticipated election.

Mr. Obama says things are looking up! Really? While the economy languished, with a super-majority in Congress, this president failed to produce policies that would bring us back from recession. Unemployment has remained above 8 percent for 42 straight months. Average job creation dropped from 153,000 a month through 2011 to 139,000 a month since January of 2012, with only 96,000 created in August – 125,000-plus needed just to keep up with population growth in the workforce – and a downward adjustment in jobs created of 41,000 for June/July. 23.1 million Americans are unemployed, underemployed or have just given up under his leadership.

And perhaps that is the crux of why he can fool so many, those who stand in line for government handouts, no longer believing the American Dream. They have given up. All the great hoax masters know that if you tell a big enough lie often enough there will be some who will start to believe it. I prefer to believe in another president who said “You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time. But you can’t fool all the people all the time.”

@ Re: Cogito Ergosumatra

“Do your own research and not what our TV news tells you..”

And then you recommend that we all watch a propaganda film that has been debunked even by many righties as a baseless scare-tactic.

Tell me, did you write that post with a straight face?

I did research my (as you put it) cut and paste submission and found it very truthful. I was also sucked in by Obama during his first shot at the presidency, everything he said sounded so good. I should have realized it then that if something sounds to good to be true it probably is, I won't make the same mistake again. Do your own research and not what our TV news tells you and you will find what I said is fact. Have you ever heard of the documentary, 2016 Obama's America? What a scary eye opener it is. Find it watch it and maybe you will think differently about our commander in chief!

For Mr. Martin (not that he's particularly interested in the truth): http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/o/obama-report-card.htm and several other sites that debunk his ridiculous assertions about the President. You could only believe these silly things if you are highly invested in Obama being a bad guy, and if you can easily ignore the truth. Why would someone hate the President this much? You tell me.

@ 'wingnuts':

Oh, silly me, I didn't realize corruption is OK if the quid pro quo is "only a ceremonial position."

BTW, did you check all of those URLs to confirm them before posting?

Like Mr. Martin's copy-n-paste, yours starts out reasonably, then degenerates into ridiculousness. Item 194 was of particular interest: "Loosened the rules and allowed the 14 states that legalized medical marijuana to regulate themselves without federal interference."

Didn't you and Mary Jane attend the ASA demonstration in Phoenix on Sep. 20? The demonstration was in protest over the more than 200 SWAT-style DEA raids on legitimate medical marijuana businesses (twice the rate under the Bush Administration) and the indictment by the DOJ of more than 70 persons. Grow house equipment was confiscated, crops destroyed, and U.S. Attorneys have threatened hundreds of landlords with seizure of their property if they didn't promptly evict the medical marijuana businesses renting from them. Does that sound like regulation without federal interference?

Here's a question for you:

Why would Obama - head of the stoner Choom Gang when he attended the exclusive Punahou School in Hawaii - appoint Eric Holder, proponent of strict drug laws, as attorney general? And why did he reject Calderon's plea for decriminalization? If Obama had been busted for pot and "a little blow" in his teens he could not possibly have succeeded in his career. Why is he dooming other, less privileged youth to a prison term and life of crime?

Beautifully reasoned argument, Mr. Barber. Love it when critics can only attack their own straw men.

However, I still say it's not just about the economy this time.

All common sense seems to have left these pages. People need to face reality and decide for themselves instead of all the drivel on the air waves. I do not watch cable or network news, ironocally 99% of my news comes from NPR on my way to work (about as left as you can get). To decide for yourselves pay attention to everyday life around you. Grocery prices are going through the roof, gas prices are even more nuts, my accountant calls us once a month with more news on rediculous requirements placed on businesses (my wife and I own our own business with 1 employee). The amount of paperwork involved even with one employee is getting beyond rediculous. Absolutely nothing is better than it was the day Pres. Obama took office. Blame it on whoever you want to rationalize your personal bias. When you get to the bottom of it all this administration has been an absolute failure and the country can not take 4 more years of the direction it is going. There are too many undeserving people sucking off the government we all see it every day no one can deny that but Romney gets in trouble for saying it I for one like a guy honest enough to say it straight. So bottom line is anyone living in reality and in their right mind would never vote for Pres. Obama. But as seen in this paper their are a lot of people not in their right mind. One last point you can always tell when you have won an argument with a liberal when they throw out the race card it shows they have nothing left to defend their view.

@ Jim, again

In your tireless defense of republicants, regardless the egregious nature of the offense, and your incessant attacks on Democrats, no matter the insignificance of the act, you prove that, indeed, "... you can fool some of the people all of the time."

Regarding the arrogance and self-induced ignorance of the republicant ideology, The Washington Post's Michael Gerson writes: "... a Republican ideology pitting the "makers" against the " takers" offers nothing... Human worth is reduced to economic production. Social problems are reduced to personal vices. Politics is reduced to class warfare on behalf of the upper class.'

He describes you and your ilk, Mr. Barber, and it is not a pretty picture.

To anyone.

@ John A. Bond

You have a right to your opinion of women, but your comment makes me wonder how many professional women you really know.

In the 20 years I worked for small businesses and institutions, I was never paid less than men in the same company with the same skill-sets. Except for part-time jobs while in high school, I always received timely cost of living raises and extra compensation for additional responsibilities. In fact, I had one boss who insisted on raising everyone's salary "to improve morale" during a slump. I'm sure I'm not alone. Many women are capable of choosing good employers. Many women do their jobs well and become too valuable to a company's operations to risk loosing them.

Deluded Obama haters will believe anything to justify their bigotry. Class warfare is when business owners ignore wage and hour laws, order people to work overtime without paying for it, bully and badger people to work on paid holidays, insult and belittle their workers for fun and dodge paying their fair share of taxes. The President exposes the mistreatment of working people, particularly women, for what it is, works in favor of laws to bring fairness and justice to the workplace, but gets accused of ethnic and class warfare. What power do working people have to get justice in the workplace, except for our democracy? You think your hard work and integrity at your jobs counts for anything? Nope. Workers are just liabilities that must be used up and thrown away. The truth is, our government works for us. Corporations do not. Pretty simple concept.
