Letter: Who are the true conservatives?

Editor:

During the Teapublican primaries, we’ve heard each of the candidates claim to be the only “true” conservative. But upon listening to their plans, it seems apparent that the only things they want to conserve are their own fortunes and those of the corporations they hope to represent.

It was during a recent Teapublican debate that I discovered that, instead of the liberal I thought myself to be, I’ve actually been a conservative all along. After all, I believe in conserving our Constitution and the Bill of Rights which guarantees equality and the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness for all people regardless of race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.

I believe in conserving clean air and water. I believe in conserving our forests, our streams and our oceans. I believe in conserving wildlife. I believe in conserving fossil fuels by not using them wastefully.

I believe in conserving lives by only going to war as a last resort. I believe in conserving taxpayer money by eliminating unfair corporate subsidies, off-shore tax havens and no-bid contracts. I believe in conserving American middle class jobs by refusing to reward greedy corporations that out-source them to other countries. I believe in conserving the American tradition of building things rather than destroying them through vulture capitalism.

I believe in conserving the rights of workers to bargain for fair compensation. I believe in conserving our citizens’ homes, savings and safety with common-sense regulations for corporations. I believe in conserving safety nets such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. I believe in conserving our citizens’ health by providing access to affordable health care for everyone. I believe in conserving the rights of women to control their own bodies even if I disagree with their decisions. I believe in conserving our future by providing all children with the opportunity to receive a good education.

Finally, I believe in conserving America’s standing as a role model for the world rather than as a bully. And I believe in conserving the idealism that has always driven Americans by focusing on what can be, rather than what once was.

Gary LaMaster

@ Richard Hertz.

You're kidding, right? I mean, this is a joke, right? Calling Gingrich "a man of character."

You're going for laughs here, right, Richard?

Right?

...especially when I see remarks like Slater Slater's, that maybe the real question should be, Who are the true human beings in our society? And what term DO we use to describe those who hold the value of monetary limitations over the value of basic human needs and rights being met? I don't even want to think about how many would answer, "realists"... Where's that great American spirit of overcoming all obstacles when it comes to getting behind something as simple as solidarity of support for all? What happened to the "United" part of the USA???

Oh that spin to win. To conserve that 1% and their godly right to welfare. The godly right to invade the womans body. The godly right to be racist. Yes the right to continue the shame. Americans know it must be hard for some to change and to hope for a better America, after all, for years its been the same! Thank goodness for the information HWY. Thank goodness that God took Adam's rib and made a Loud Speaker and majority vote. Amen.

I believe I'll conserve any liberal tendencies
I may have, until we can afford not to.

Gary Lemaster is, as usual, cofused. He has identified himself as a conservationist, not a conservative. Look it up in your Funk and Wagnalls. Why does his conservationism not extend to our tax dollars?

Actually I am pretty sure sexual orientation appears nowhere in the Constitution or Bill of Rights. Not that there is anything wrong with that LOL. Liberals, always adding their politics.

Love it! Then by that definition, I'm a conservative too! Who'd have thunk??? LOL Thanks for bringing the true root of that word to everyone's attention. It's never matched the mindset & attitude these folks espouse to me, either. Now we just have to find a term that DOES really represent their idealogy! A few come to mind immediately, but...I'd best refrain from following my first impulses.

And no Jen, I don't agree at all that Mr. LaMaster's brilliant reframing of the conservative term paints him as a "Ron Paul conservative"...--shudder--

Article comment by: Cognitive dissonance

If we are to believe Mr. LaMaster is sincere about being truly conservative, then it must cause him tremendous cognitive dissonance.

How can he possibly support President Obama when he is running trillion dollar deficits every year and with no end in sight?

President Obama is most certainly not conserving our money. He is in fact irresponsibly burying us and future generations in crushing debt. He is taking our country in precisely the wrong direction.

His proposed budget is more of the same failed economic policies. He refuses to responsibly address the unsustainable social security and medicare entitlements (mistakenly referred to as "safety nets" in Mr. LaMaster's letter).

Instead of running the country, Mr. Obama is running a re-election campaign. We are left devoid of competent leadership.

President Obama has arguably blown out the budget far worse than any other president in the history of the United States.

If Mr. LaMaster really means what he's saying, there's no way he can vote Democrat. If he truly understands what conservatism is all about, he'll be making a smarter choice in November.

By and large, you are a Ron Paul conservative. He, at least, is the only Republican candidate who can rally conservatives, liberals, progressives, democrats, republicans, pinkos, libertarians a broad political spectrum, and the only viable alternative to the status quot. The "Hope and Change" peddled by Obama has proven to be more of the same big government crap that's been running the country since Carter. Romney, Santorum, and Gingrich all share the same failed policies. When will America wake up to see the writings on the wall!

As Americans, we may never agree on everything, however, the beauty of the Ron Paul presidency is the fact that no matter what your political persuasion is, we can all unite around the banner of legalizing freedom, the constitution, and a sound monetary policy Ron Paul supporters are NOT single issue voters! I dare say that it is not hyperbole to state the obvious: that Ron Paul may just represent the last chance we have to take our country back from the precipice of the globalist utopia where we are currently teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. You want to preserve Social Security and Medicare? Then preserve our Republic and keep the vultures from spending it on Regime replacement in the M.E. Vote Ron Paul, the only intellectually consistent choice and the only one who warned us about the housing collapse and who tried to prevent it.

You can't fool me Gary. I know you are one of those lazy, welfare-sucking, freedom-hating liberals trying to destroy America. I pray that a man of character like Romney or Gingrich gets elected to save us from Obama's reign of terror.
